Don’t send that M1 Macbook back yet, you CAN add two 4K monitors.
Out of the box, Apple’s new M1-powered Macbooks only support one external monitor, but you can get around that limitation. In this video, we use a Plugable Dual 4K DisplayPort or HDMI Display Universal Docking Station (UD-6950Z) to show you how to easily and affordably connect two 4K monitors to your Macbook Pro or Macbook Air.

I hope this works for my M1 MBP setup with two 4K monitors. I do plan to trade it for the M1X with the extra ports. I have a family member that has a 2018 MBP that will be able to use the Plugable dock once I upgrade who really could not care about dual monitors and only wants the dock to connect one monitor and for ethernet. My Startech TB3DOCK2DPPD was doing fine with my old mid-2014 MBP. Got it free to review and used it for many years. I will donate it to another family member currently using my 2014 MBP.

I have two monitors and I had the same issue. I bought a little USB-C to HDMI dongle for one extended display. For the second one, I used a 1080p Apple TV that was already in my house. Plugged the Apple TV into the second monitor, clicked system settings on my MacBook, clicked displays, clicked the add button and it let me mirror a screen to that Apple TV. Works great!

@@Plugable it has its limitations. It isn’t giving me 1080p at 60hz lol. I actually bought one of your products last night because I have three monitors. In no way was I trying to crap on your product lol. Hope you guys know that. I just know that some folks are a little limited on resources and they make some form of a streaming device with airplay. However, your port that contains display link is the most ideal solution. The Apple TV worked but it was a noticeable difference in image quality when two monitors were side by side. It isn’t ideal at all. Its just possible for someone who is on a budget. I will continue to buy your products. I’m in a coding bootcamp right now and I’m a marketing major. Therefore, while DisplayLink USB graphics is great for general office or productivity tasks, we don't recommend DisplayLink for more graphics intensive tasks such as gaming. Curious if this trick works on M1/M2 iPad Pro's now that they support full external monitor.
@Plugable
@Plugable Год назад
Hello, thanks for asking! Unfortunately it will not work as hoped. iPadOS 16 is not supported by DisplayLink or Silicon Motion at this time. Stage Manger when paired with an M1 or M2 MacBook Pro, allows for one external extended display over USB-C Alt Mode. Such as our USBC-7IN1E --> plugable.com/products/usbc-7in1e My apologies for not having a better answer at this time. Please let us know if we can be of any additional assistance. We recently did a blog post on connecting such displays with the M1 Mac: plugable.com/blogs/news/things-to-know-about-thunderbolt-3-displays-and-the-m1-mac Unfortunately there is currently no way to connect more than one Thunderbolt/USB-C display, like the LG displays, to any of the M1 computers.

This docking station is nice when it works. But as soon as your mac goes to sleep only one of the two monitors work! To fix it I have to do a combination of unplugging the docking station and restarting DisplayLink Manager multiple times and even then it wont work sometimes.. This is immensely annoying. How can I fix this? Or will I have to return this?

I want to get this so bad because every product I see only lets you do mirroring instead of 3 separate screens. So I like how you can have 3 separate screens for this. For this product, I don’t need those extra ports is there any where you can have 3 monitors but only for hdmi? Maybe something cheaper? Help
@Plugable
@Plugable 2 года назад
Thank you for asking. While we do have DisplayLink USB 3.0 display adaptors that could be used to just extend displays, like the USBC-6950U, it is actually more expensive than going with one of the docking station options listed in this video.

Thank you for the video. Just one question. its this the best solution since it occupies both the USB C port (one for power, other one for the hub)? I use multiple external SSD drives with USB C cable. In that case i won't have any option but to use the USB 3 ports for those SSD with Adaptors which will limit the data transfer i guess. Any comment?
@Plugable
@Plugable 2 года назад
Hello, For macOS devices with only two connection ports, we typically recommend connecting the rest of your peripherals via USB 3.0 ports on the dock, but I understand that this is not ideal. Another option would be to use a Thunderbolt passthrough hub allow you to use your power connection on the second port, but still connect external devices. Thank you! -Ryoma
@Oneklickmedia
@Oneklickmedia 2 года назад
I have this problem now that is why I'm searching for a new hub. My current set up won't work cause I use external SSD, Display port for my 4k external. I can only use the DP+External SSD without power charging. Once battery is low, I would have to remove the DP to charge my MBPm1. I made the mistake and bought the hub that slide onto the side which only allow ONE USB C for charge and the SECOND for data transfer only. I am really pushing to get this one now!
