There should be a capability or a mode you can choose to make the cable modem turn into a simple AP and then make the default gateway on that device point to the INSIDE ip address of the firewall (in this case 172.16.1.1). Also configure your firewall with DHCP for the 172.16.1.X subnet, this way anyone who connects to your "new AP" and requests an IP address gets an ip from the Firewall's dhcp.
