Reason to use the Baton XD is that it also does real time expansion (in addition to time division), so you can see the spectrograms in MUCH more detal compared to the frequency division only. In the above videos (and with other frequency division methods) you cannot see enough detail to see shape of the call. Also, as a bonus, the XD is designed to connect direclty to a smarthone with a standard 4pin 3.5mm jack to jack - so no spitter needed.

Would I be correct in saying the frequency detection in spectral view is limited to between 0 - 21khz ?Is there an app that covers a range up to 112khz?
That is correct, but in the example the bat detector is dividing the frequency by 10. So a bat call going into the detector at 50khz, goes into the phone at 5khz, meaning the phone can hear it. No phone can record natively far beyond human hearing
Hello Tom, I consider buying the Batbox Baton, original not the XD version, in order to use it on my Android smartphone. While the original version is really affordable (100€) but made to be used with a laptop to see the spectrogram, the XD version is ready-to-use with any smartphone but way more expensive (+300€). As the principle of the original version is to send a signal from the device line out to the laptop line in, I guess I could just change the laptop by my smartphone, right ? Not sure that would work, but on the paper that should... what are your thoughts Tom ? If you think that would work, a single jack cable should be enough as it only sends a FD signal ? DreamPetrucci51 Exactly. In fact I was thinking of doing the very same. There is no need to get the new Baton in order to connect to your smartphone as far as I can see. Since the output is frequency division only you would not need the stereo to mono splitter that I use in this video. However you would likely still need the other cable (attenuation cable, the white one in the video). Let us know how you get on! Tom
...I think you'll find the Magenta 5 is heterodyne only, all the actual frequency of the call is lost in making the bat calls audible. You'd need a more expensive detector capable of frequency division (or even better, full spectrum) to display the required on a sonogram.

Hi Keith, As you can see from the video you can record to your phone in spectrum view but the android app I show does not record. If you want to record the audio any normal audio recording app should do it but you won't get the nice visualisations Tom
