Once you understand this chord structure, your piano playing will never be the same. It's used commonly in both Jazz and Neo Soul, but you'll really hear it used in an absolutely gorgeous way in modern Neo Soul-Inspired tracks that cross genres as well. A really important part of this sound is the dim(maj7) chord, i.e. a diminished triad with a major 7. The structure comes down to being built like a block chord, but with a major 7 instead of a 6. Use this over any melody or chord progression for a modern sound. Enjoy this jazz and Neo Soul piano tutorial with Noah Kellman.

Thanks Noah. The really unleashed a whole new freedom and sound in playing. There were things I was inadvertently doing but this gave me a way to totally utilize these enclosures. It opened up some of the mystery on how Herbie and others were getting these cool sounding lines.

I like how this gets my focus to anchor the chord tone AND the beat. I've been sloppy with my rhythm without assessing it. I am very picky with the notes though. Thanks to your lesson I can trust my flailing fingers while shifting focus to hit that 3 beat with the chord tone. Compartmentalizing the most hazardous and troublesome areas of my meandering to maintain control in the urgency of bubbling inspiration.

Great lesson on how you should be landing on a strong chord tone (i.e. 1, 3,5, or) on the strong beats 1 and 3. In between you can use approach tones and enclosures to add chromaticism to your lines. One thing that might be confusing here if I'm not mistaken is that some of actual played examples started with the 6th or 9th on beat 1. Of course any rule can be broken if sounds good.

Hey Noah, I'm self taught and trying to get better at piano. Do you have any recommendations for beginner piano books, especially ones with jazz or neo soul voicings/progressions/practices for swing, groove etc?

Hello from Kansas City Missouri. Great video as always Noah. I've read the other comments and I think an important point needs to be made. Their isn't just one way to teach or learn Jazz Improvisation. Their are a number of different ways. Learning the individual parts of the Bebop and Jazz Language then bringing those parts together is one way, and learning the importance of Approach Notes and Enclosures and their Rhythmic Placement is part of that. It's an important piece of the Bebop language. For any one thats interested, in my humble opinion the most thorough analysis of Charlie Parker's Bebop language can be found in a book called Bebop Guitar by Joseph Weidlick. Even though the book says Guitar, the techniques can be applied to Keyboards, Bass, and Horns. Thanks.

I'm wondering if you are repeating a 7 note motif. Are you? If so, can you do a video about repeating the same motif to make runs

So you target on the one ( or any beat of the bar really) a note you don't want [because it doesn't belong to the set (13579)] and on the and (an eighth apart) a note you don't want and on the two a note which is fine or not• if not then you repeat the process. Fine in the harmonic sense.i gather. Would that work? Eventually this has to end on the bee or the bop Excuse the symbolism, peace ✌️😎
