How to convert a normal foot switch to a Boss foot switch

In this video, I show the conversion process for changing your standard, run of the mill tap switch into a switch that will work with Boss effects pedals in the control circuit, specifically for the Boss SY-200 in this video but most other Boss effects pedals are similar. The process is very easy and, even with the cost of the foot switch I have and the replacement switches, cheaper than an actual Boss FS-6 foot switch pedal.
The conversion is required because unlike Line 6 HX series and nearly every other pedal or floor board with an external control pedal jack, Boss effects use a Closed Switch in the circuit rather than an Open Switch. In other words, Boss pedals read the interruption of a circuit as a signal to change whatever parameters on the effect instead of the completion of a circuit like many other pedals out there.
This video is for those of us who aren’t invested in MIDI controllers for their setup, but rather use a mostly analogue signal chain. This SY-200 is the only pedal I have that supports MIDI, so for me it was much more cost effective to change out a couple switches than to invest in the equipment that would allow me to control it via MIDI.

Cheers! I now know why my home made footswitch doesn't work on my Boss Street Cube. I was tearing my hair out! 🙂

Sweet! Boss footswitches are not only expensive, but also ugly as hell and way too big for a switch in my opinion - a waste of pedalboard space. Thanks for the clip! It's very informative and I bet you helped a lot of people. Cheers!

I have similar thoughts my dude. I wasn’t gonna pay what they wanted for their foot switches so I decided to make my own. Glad I could be of help in your endeavors!

I am not sure. Unfortunately Boss doesn’t have great documentation of what type of circuit all of their foot switches use for expression pedals. The documentation I’ve seen has only given examples with the Boss foot switches and say to set it to either A or B type switching. The only way to know for sure is to get a foot switch and test it. Check the foot switch with a multimeter so you know if it is normally closed or normally open. Once you know this, plug it into your pedal and try using it. If it doesn’t work, it’s most likely the opposite circuit of what you have.

Would this work with the boss katana go headphone amp that just came out? I’m looking for a cheap way to change presets by foot

I unfortunately am not sure. If you have some form of external tap switch for a delay pedal, you can test if this mod will work for you or not. All you have to do is plug it into the TRS plug for expression pedals and see what happens. If nothing happens or it gets stuck scrolling like the SY200 in the video, you probably need the mod. If it changes normally, you don’t need the mod. I have no experience with the Katana line of amps, as I’ve gone all in on tubes and pedals. I’ve seen them but never played one.

How about the gt10 pedal, doeswill it work with the normally closed momentary switches?

I am not sure, unfortunately. Boss only states in their instructions for the GT-10 that it is expecting a momentary signal, but does not state if it is in a normally closed or open circuit. It does give instructions on which way to set the polarity of the FS-6 foot switch, which I believe is to set the switch for normally closed or open operation. However, it is not labeled in any meaningful way other than “polarity” so your guess is as good as mine here. If you already have a normally open control switch, try it in the control jack of your GT-10. If it doesn’t work properly, you will need to do the mod. If it works, you will not need to do the mod.
