I try to go through my conversion of this bass in as much detail as possible. The project will cost you anywhere from $300 to $600+, depending on what replacement parts you choose and if you are looking for used or new. If you'd like one, this one will be up for sale, or I can offer to do one for you. Just leave a comment below.
Throughout the video I give samples of the sound of the neck pickup. Finally, at the conclusion, you can here the bridge pickup as I perform a cover of "Cornucopia" by Foreigns. Please support the original artist: thebunn.bandca...
Here's the hardware I used (I'm in Germany):
www.creamery-p...
www.bareknuckl...
www.thomann.de...
www.rockinger....
www.thomann.de...
And I've strung it up with StringJoy custom strings 14-70.

This is awesome. I've been looking for a baritone guitar with a 30" scale as I'm primarily a bass player. I might have to build it myself, but this is essentially what I've been looking for. Thanks for making this!

Maybe it's a bit too late, but instead of building it from scratch, you can maybe look for a Ibanez src6 on reverb or eBay. I have two of them, one in Low E-e standard and one in Baritone B standard.

@@ShawnHeath No problem. Always fun introducing people to new music. And you're right. I should take a step back and temper my expectations. Haha. I'll come back down to Earth tomorrow. Might just be able to do a 5 string bass and go from there.

@@CFChristian there's a 5 string version of the bass I used - it's a TMB305. Not sure which A you mean for your 7 string, but you probably don't need a full 30". 28 or 28.5" should get you there easily without any issue. I was in G-standard for that cover.

i'm trying to do this with an old monkey ward's bass. I never thought of putting the dowel thru the original holes for the tuning keys, in order to reposition.very good idea i assume you drilled them out a little bigger?
@ShawnHeath
@ShawnHeath 2 года назад
If, for example you're in America and you can't find metric dowel rod to match the holes, then yes. But I didn't have to. If you do, take your time and run the drill backwards to avoid tearout. I'd love to see it when you're done!

Have really been looking into doing this but wanted to do a 7 string so would need a 5 string 30"
@ShawnHeath
@ShawnHeath 2 года назад
I've seen several and I gotta say, I don't think it's what most people are expecting. Bass bridges are wider than guitar, so adding another string really widens that bridge, making the base of the neck significantly wider than a standard 7-string guitar. I'd recommend looking harder for an actual 30" 7-string.

@ShawnHeath
@ShawnHeath 2 года назад
The tuning is no worse than other guitars I've had. I bend a lot (maybe you got that from the song at the end), so I usually have to make minor adjustments once a day or so. If I don't play so rough, it holds tuning better.

Could I put a normal scale guitar neck on it? Do I have to move the bridge a lot to get that to work?
@ShawnHeath
@ShawnHeath Год назад
Good question! I can't say for sure, but I doubt that whatever neck you'd try to use would fit in the neck pocket properly, so you'd have to fill that and re-rout it to the shape of the neck heel. Then yes, the normal Talman has a different bridge position than this 30" bass, so you'd need to move it according to the scale length defined by the neck you've chosen. It's probably better to just buy a normal Talman guitar.

You'd need a special custom made neck for that, and probably move the bridge. But why? Just get a standard talman and save yourself the trouble and expense.
@aquarius5264
@aquarius5264 9 месяцев назад
question, could you switch out the strings for thicker ones and tune a baritone guitar to BEADGC like a 6 string bass?
@ShawnHeath
@ShawnHeath 9 месяцев назад
I wouldn't go with such thick strings as that on this. This scale length doesn't really support that really low bass B, and for the next octave up, you'd be better off with a standard baritone scale length of 27" or so.
@aquarius5264

@@ShawnHeath most 6 strings are around 30" or even less, i don't see how it doesn't support it

Cheaper to buy a baritone
@ShawnHeath
@ShawnHeath 2 года назад
Thanks Steve, but your posit implies you're buying a cheap one. In that case, as long as you don't do any upgrades, it is cheaper. But at the moment the cheap baris can really use the upgrades, so you come out around the same price, but with a higher quality starting point than a subzero rogue vi, for example. But this project's expense actually places it pretty midfield, price wise.
@stevewilliams1122
@stevewilliams1122 2 года назад
@@ShawnHeath my comments are more around the cost of all the tools needed. Squier tele baritones are pretty affordable at the moment. Your project is good if you already have the gear needed.
