Many thanks for this. I had no idea VLC (which I use a LOT) could do these conversions. A few comments down shakesdug provided some extra information to help with a 'no sound' issue. All sorted now. Brilliant!
For everybody questioning the sound issue here is what worked for me: After selecting Video - H.264 + MP3 (MP4) I clicked on the wrench. Then I selected the Audio codec tab and selected MPEG 4 Audio ( AAC) and then hit save. Once converted I could then send it to my iPhone and have video with sound. (I tried selecting MP3 for audio and it gave me sound on my PC but didn't have sound on my iPhone). So, you may need to try various audio options depending on your target for watching the video.

I was starting to think I'd hit a brick wall converting an MTS file to MP4 for a mate. 4 different pieces of software I tried, and every time just turned it into a silent movie (1st attempt with VLC also silent) Then I found your tip.....GREAT it worked perfectly. Thank you SO much, i use a video editing program that only takes mp4 files and i had a mpk file, I sent it to google drive and now its finished! Great simple easy to understand video, you earned a sub, and im sure to return whenever i need more helpful videos!
The VLC software looks a bit different from the video description.. I don't see the convert/save option. I'm using MACOS as well but when I open the software it has a "Drop Media here" icon and says "Open media." Well I dragged and dropped my MP4 file and it started playing the music file; I didn't want that so I exited and clicked "Open media" and it prompt another window saying "Open source" and at that point there was no options whatsoever that the video describes.. Everything is different, it has four menus, " File, Disc, Network and Capture." Not sure what any of that means? Anyway I didn't give up there, I saw it said " Choose a file" next to "Browse" so I clicked on it and selected my mp4 file, and it says nothing about converting the file. I'm just confused at this point, not sure if this software still popular to use but any advice?
I was very pleased as I was able to make the proper conversions of six short videos into one seamless video until I played it and learned that in making the conversions I completely lost the audio in the newly completed seamless video. Is there any way you can help me with suggestions? It seemed to go smooth until I played the newly created video?
Hello Jennifer. I have a question. I followed the same procedure, and each time I convert the webm to MP3 and open the converted file, the album is incomplete. I notice that from 195 MB is drops to to 45 MB. However in VLC the file is complete, I downloaded this from youtube, any suggestions? I am missing a step? Please help.
I just converted some VHS tapes with iMemories and I'm having trouble moving those files to iPhotos. I keep getting the unsupported file message. Any ideas, I've tried everything I know?

I had the Old VLC weeding video file. But it's was not clearly visual as HD video. It was taken more than 2hours and 45minutes. What shall I do to be HD video .It was 15years later.
Jennifer, I have about 15 minute long DVD video disc / of that was given to me as evidence in a case from that was formatted in a Microsoft Windows format 318.4 MB. On my new Mac Pro lap top 500 GB capacity & 200 GB iCloud capacity : I need to convert this Microsoft file from 2018 , on the Mac I NEED to be able copy from the file to take various screen shots and small snippets / video clips 8 to 15 seconds long to present to a client ! The Editing app that I will be using is i-Movie to go back & forth on my Mac & 7th Generation i pad. Is there a way to use this free VLC program safely on my Mac to do this ? Bruce W R

Thank you. I can get it to convert a 7-second mpg video to mp4 but not a 22 second video. I try giving it a couple minutes but I don't see any progress on the bar. It only makes a 160b file.
I was stoked when I found your video and thought to myself, "See! That wasn't so hard! Now, was it?" I opened VLC, I already had it installed because really, who doesn't? Copied the file I needed to convert from my phone to my desktop. Followed your instructions exactly until I got to the "Profile Selection", and I found nothing for MKV. I have a 5+ GB MP4 file that I want to convert to MKV but I'm not seeing anything in the profiles for that file type. I just thought I would mention that for anyone watching this video looking to do the same thing. And please if there's something I'm missing please tell me what it is!
Hi there Shawn (and maybe other readers with the same problem), if you haven't figured out a solution maybe I can help. I came across the option MKV in the sub settings-menu that is next to the profile section. It looks like a little grey wrench tool. If you click on that a window unfolds with a lot of other formats that you can select (at least in my version of VLC 3.0.16) I hope this is helpful :)
Hi, thanks for your videos. Personally, they have been a valuable help to me. I have followed his video of adding CC to the videos using the RU-vid platform to be able to access the CC in Spanish which is my first language. However. Is there a player that allows me to have the CC that youtube has generated in its videos without always having to use the youtube platform? I explain. I upload the videos to the youtube platform so that it generates the CC for me in Spanish and English. Then with a program, I capture the video playback with the CC in Spanish and English and that's when I save them on my Laptop. What the player that I use as a VCL does not allow me to do is activate the CC in Spanish or English when I need it. There is a player that allows me to do it without having to do this long process. Those videos are private because of the copyright issue. Thanks for your help in advance. Greetings.
Gonna be honest never knew the vlc have that option until recently i wanted a free software capable of doing that and of those was vlc in all the year never try other setting in vlc 😅😅😅
I've used the program you suggested a few times now and it works great. Its fairly quick and allows you to drop multiple files in at a time to convert. Strong recommendation. Thanks again.
Hmm. That is bizarre! Try opening the converted file in a different media player like Windows Media Player. Sometimes VLC can have playback glitches. What was the original file format?
I have a movie mkv file 800mb I need to make it 360p smaller file For my smaller device... How can I make it to 360p and for example smaller file like 350mb Please help
If you choose a profile, you will see a tab in the Video section named Resolution, there you can input the dimensions for 360p, it will convert to a smaller size.
Jennifer, it seems I will not subscribe. There are many questions here and I have found a problem someone asked about many months ago. You do not respond to questions and the first video I saw of your is not helpful. Seems like you are not the person to go to for useful advice.
