When working with servers you will often find yourself in a situation where you need to copy files from one machine to another. You can package them into a tarball and then copy a tarball over to a remote machine and then unpack it there. This is not a bad option but you can also use SCP to copy the files as they are and preserve the directory structure, without the need for packaging.
In this entry-level tutorial, we will quickly go over the steps on how to copy directories with SCP but also give you some additional tips in case you encounter any issues along the way.

Lucky me! I needed to copy a bunch of folders off a depreciated server and heard about this on the Jupiter Podcast this morning. Great job explaining. Super helpful.

Does it changes the last modified date on the target server or it remains same as it was on source server ?

This is great, but how do you add a -i to identify a pem key? I tried several different ways and I could not get it to work out the syntax. Any help would be greatly appreciated - thanks for the video!

If there is a folder already existing with the same name will it copy and replace it with updated content?

So this took me about 2 hours to figure out (way too long), but I thought I'd share - if you need to do exactly what is in the video, BUT, you need to pass along a pem key, the syntax would be this... scp -i /path/to/your/*file.pem -rp /path/to/folder/you/want/to/copy username@xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:/home/username/ essentially, everything is exactly the same after the -r /path/to/your/*file.pem - I hope this helps someone. Again, thanks for the video!
