Hey I know this is an older video, but just wanted to thank you for this. When I was a kid, my mom would criticize all of my art based on other stuff because she said “all I did was copy.” Really shamed me into trying to do stuff just on my own from observation, so my body proportions were always really odd. I’ve since taught my kids to find some artists they like, and copy them like crazy until you can do their style with your eyes shut. Then put their stuff away and use those mechanics you develop for a long time and you’ll see that, while you do obviously have an influence to a style, your brain will change it to your own signature style in time.
+Derek Laufman I remember being super-afraid to copy work as a kid. I always had to figure things out myself... which admittedly rarely worked. I have almost no fan art from when I was a kid, which I really regret.
Got your art book specifically to practice copying from it and learn the intricacies of your style! This video is a perfect supplement to that thank you
Awesome! One of my sons loves to draw and he is always copying stuff from the web... I know that copying isn't bad, you learn a lot, but this tutorial will help him understand how to learn better by copying... thanks!!
Tutorials like yours and Todd Nauck's are great. It brings us as fans and proteges into your methodology. Plus it helps that you are likable guys. Makes me want to do my own tutorials for others. Learning is a three part process: see it, do it, teach it.
Hey, awesome video!!! I do this a lot, but din't know it was a good thing or not. The difference is that once I don't have a wacom or something similar, what I do is to open the image on my laptop use it a reference. I look at it and try to transfer as closer I can get to the paper. Doing as you just did. Trying to understand the shapes and the drawing structure. I love your drawings so I use them as reference a lot, and I'm learning a lot. :D Thanks for the video.
+Derek Laufman I try to do this with the lighting and coloring! and is very helpful, also I purchase the Venom, vader and deadpool chibi Pack for study the lighting and the coloring. I hope soon you make an online course. love your art and style
+DreStudios haha well i'm working on a 4 part series at the moment. Part One is going to come this week. I'm still trying to get used to making these vids. Its more work than I thought:)
thanks a lot Derek, those tips will really help me, i really love your art style, and I did copied some of them , only adding some background in the drawing....but now i'll try to practice more and do my own drawings taking inspiration on yours. ps: i posted some of them on my instagram, so, should I mark you and give you credits? i tought that since i was only doing for fun, you wouldn't mind, but i honestly just want you to know that i did it only 'cause i really like your drawings
+Thiago Weslley Really I don't care but sometimes people that follow me will spot stuff like that and leave nasty comments. Its best to just credit the artist to be safe. Also like I said in the video my advice is to not post the direct copies of stuff and save that just for your own personal growth. But take my tips on how to do it a better way and learn as much as you can:)
