Good examples you chose to illustrate the lessons in this video. Thanks for sharing the camera exposure modifier suggestions and the On1 filters.

Thank you for your video. I am a little confused by one aspect of your suggestions. You mention that in a scene with high dynamic range, that you should expose for the highlights, then increase the exposure of the shadows in post. This seems exactly opposite a suggestion I have seen other places that says you should slightly over-expose an image, and then pull down exposure in the highlights. This is commonly called expose to the right (referring to the histogram). Obviously, you can go to far in exposing to the right, because you may lose detail if the area is fully blown out. On the other hand, increasing the exposure of the shadows can increase noise in the image. Would you care to comment further?

It all depends on the situation and how you are looking to edit the image. Either way would work depending on the light and the desired result. One may lean towards having a bit of noise in their image versus sacrificing details in the highlights, while another may want the opposite effect. I prefer exposing for my highlights in most cases, but I can see how the other way would be just as appealing. Dylan

Excellent video! Quick question. Is the adjustable masking tool and the masking bug the same tool?

So my subject is standing in shaded area on a bright day, but still the camera makes the subject look shaded because of the bright background. What's the best solution for this? Thanks

You could apply a local adjustment (lighten mode) to the subject with some brushing. The brushing most likely wouldnt need to be perfect but would do a good job of lightening the subject.

The same tips you gave for photography will work wonders for video as well. You consistently do a great job but you are outside, full sun and the video camera desperately needed a ND filter as the background and the top of your head is over exposed. Video cameras don't handle highlights as well as photos. You may have been using your phone, but it looks like the camera was exposing for you and blowing out the background and sky. The tip you used for the red car with the silk/diffuser would have been very helpful while you were shooting this video. I know it probably sounds nit picky as you were giving photo tips, but watching an over exposed video on controlling light seems a bit ironic. Thank you for the work you do with On1 and it's really great software.
