A key note about steraks as a counter, sterak activates at 30% HP, a good garen knows that 30% hp is the threshold to kill any champ in the game with rank 2 R, so a sterak being popped is a signal for garen to ult you after the shield expires.
As a Garen main, I tell you that Garen's weakness is Vision, Displacement and Range. Don't bother using Stuns, Snares/Root and Slows it will bother him little to none due to Slow Cleance Q and a ridiculous 60% Tenacity W. So.. why all 3 weakness? •Vision allows you to prepare entering combat against Garen allowing you to save important Skills/Spells to throw at him when he come barreling down unto your team, despite how ridiculous damaging this Juggernaut is, it does not have a reliable Gap Closing Skill which brings to the next point. •His only option is to, close the Gap is Q with Stridebreaker and a skilled Garen will know how to time W to negate CC's however Displacement Counters him, his ridiculously high Tenacity has no effect on Displacement and with it allows you for the next point. •Maintaining Range/Kiting when his Abilities are not on CD, one of Garen's most dangerous aspect is his ability destroy almost everyone once he got to them really close but with Displacement and Kiting you can beat him easily. ✌🏻✌🏻✌🏻✌🏻✌🏻
Armor isnt that bad against garen. armor is only worse than health because of the base damage of his ult and the 25% e armor shred that only comes after he already dealt decent damage. Also you always want a mix of hp and resistences. So its not bad to build some armor when you already have steraks Randuims omen works against his e when he builds crit i think Zhonjas hourglass Guardian angel
As a Garen otp, I can confirm. Shields and HP are the biggest counters. Just forget armor and stack HP, I swear, the percentage damage on his R doesn't matter if he can't even get you in range for it, Garen has no %Max HP damage outside of it and can't use Blade of the Ruined king.
Full crit garen can shred you though if you don’t stack armor even if you have 4K hp as long as garen wins lane that is and unless I am fighting a ranged top laner as garen I usually win lane by abusing the passive. A lot of people don’t play around garen passive correctly in lane and get punished for it.
U don't need defense if be can't get to you. Jokes aside armor is not going to be effective against him unless it for the early game to minimize damage early. Assuming you have 70 armor and he builds a % armor pen or none your always going to be at -20% - -60% armor.
@@punishing_birb I mean I build full crit garen in regular games when I am ahead and the enemy team isn’t building a full armor tank. It also makes sense since it allows me to murder everyone really fast including the top laner. Also thanks to phantom dancer I get more speed catching up to people than I would with a pure bruiser build to help catch people out who try to kite.
I can help with singed stay with your frist wave so he don't proxy if he decides to ignore frist wave and proxy any way push it fast and go back to him you can ward the start of jungle to see if he go for the second wave as long you have wave after 5 min he can't proxy
it really depends on what is your main go to when against a WW if it is an early monster like Darius then bought anti-heal at 2nd component if it is a late game champion like Kayle then don't go anti heal but rather play really safe and bought boot early if it is a tie matchup like Irelia then go anti-heal at 2nd component or set up a wave and call for jungle if it is a range champion like Vayne then play carefully don't overstep or fast push the wave since you are squishy, make sure to buy wards for the lane's bush so he can't try to deny aa
Against Yorick early game kill any ghouls before his E is of cooldown. E is also a skill shot so it is possible to dodge it if you know he wants to use it.Ghouls give you additional gold and they are his main damage early game. Late game it is mostly map awarness that counters him.

The counter to %missing/max hp true dmg is usually trying to counter everything else in their kit. If they can barely do any damage other than the true dmg (via kiting or hp/resistances) you can usually stall long enough to run away or win the fight.
For anyone might thinks that Garen is countered by Darius, this is partly true ONLY because Darius has Bleed passive which causes Garen's healing to be sort of "turned off", adding 5s to the passive, or even decreasing Garen's HP in an extended fights if having to much bleed point. This is exactly why Riot favors Garen more than Darius so they could have evenly fights and no one should outperform others. So yeah, if a Darius is having a Garen matchups-and boths party go all-out without kiting the other. Guess who's winning HARD? Unexpectedly but yeah, Garen will totally destroy a Darius in such circumstances. And even with kiting, an experienced Garen will take at most 3 bleed and this will cost a Darius 20% of his HP EACH!
Adding to the point, kiting a Darius and exchanging 3 bleed, and about 5% HP of Garen with 20% HP of Darius. Those 3 bleed only last for 5s and when it ends the Darius will no longer have enough time to stack those, and if he stays the Garen simply forces an all-out and claiming his kill. Or keeps kiting for 1 last time for a safer all-out outcome. In contrary, Lv1. Garen wins an all-out Darius. Lv2. Garen kiting with a positive exchange. Lv3. Garen nullify Darius Q. Lv4. If a Darius buying armor, he is the weakest. Garen will fully humiliating Darius. If he buy damage, he has better exchange-but it would still a negative result when versus an experienced Garen. Also Darius has to take more damage from the lack of bleed stacks causing to a Garen and base armor. Lv5. Even more painful caused by Garen. Lv6. The end for Darius. He builts armor and gets burned by Garen HARD, or builts damage and gets burned correctly as Riot predicted. If you can't be assured that you will be able to grind more than 3 kills from Garen in the laning phase - especially before lv6. A safe playing Garen simply OUTMATCH Darius. And don't forget, an experienced Garen is simply LOVES to have an all-out with a Darius from lv1 to lv6! So yeah, it's perfectly safe to say that if an experienced Darius facing an experienced Garen. Knowing that the Garen picked FIRST in the selecting process. The summoner had just hang themselves voluntarily. And probably don't even aware of how strong Garen is in the current meta.
Don't trade with him when he has Q and E. Use all your abilities before he silences you. Garen doesn't have a lot of damage after his Q E combo, so you can attack him almost freely.

I’ve never had trouble with a garen when playing mordekaiser. Morde just wins the all in even when garen has ignited and morde doesn’t, and you can always poke him with q or e to turn off his passive.
I always rush boots and build streak late and at 15/20 minutes when i have 0 or 2 deaths somehow garen is 10/0 because i play in plat elo and the don't look at the map xd
Illaoi = Dodge her E, only fight when she doesn't have it. If she hits E and Ults use everything you have to run away, then play aggro and pressure her until she has ult again
Just play Kayle against Garen, is imposible to lose lane, I main Garen, and I tell you, every ability of Kayle counter Garen if you play it correctly, and if you buy boots of Swift and Rylais, is game over for Garen.
You can go items like sunfire(high hp and low armor) to counter garen. Garen e reduces ur armor you should build hp but not only hp bc you also need to not get like true dmg from the garen. Also his ult can't half hp you if you build enough hp.
Tip from a Garen otp if you're going all in. If you have a slow, WAIT until he uses his Q. If you have any form of cc, wait until he uses his W instead. Q cleanses ALL SLOWS along with the speed boost and W gives an insane Tenacity boost for 3/4S OF A SECOND. Edit: Here's another tip. If he has Phase Rush, DO NOT let him proc it (Although that's hard because he can very easily proc it lol) cause if he procs it, he WILL get away and there's a good chance he will come back after a few seconds to kill you depending on the amount of abilities both of you have used during the prior fight.
Yeah, garen is REALLY easy to kite when he has 450 (because of phantom dancer + DMP) ms without Q and 500+ with it while being resisted to slows and damage (30% damage reduction for 4 SECONDS LOL) plus tanky items, plus stridebreaker and you deal literally 0 damage to him while he is running like sonic and still being bruiser Yeah, literally the easiest champion to kite, what a nonesence...
Garen is just a great champion,absolutely broken. He has a lot of countrers top but you should be good if the jgler helps you a little. Building boots wont cut it 100 percent against him , if he got ghost and flash. Champions that are good against him: Morderkaiser,yone, teemo.
And then even if Garen has a bad matchup: ignores you lvl 1 and just proxy farms behind both your turrets. 1 E is barely enough for the whole wave and his passive is not stopped from minion autos.

depends on what kind of champion you play. I play riven, so first i bait his e (cc) and all-in afterwards (lvl6+). you really need to be careful though, dont go into a position where a lot of his towers reach you, even if he doesnt have e.
A few patches ago steraks had a 60s cd which was insane sleeper as a first or second item for champ like darius who wants to spam all in early with high base stuff
Well actually, considering that armor is a diminishing return, this means that the less armor that you have, the MORE impactful not having armor will be once it gets reduced by 25%, I dont know the numbers off the top of my head but let's just say if you have 50 armor and buy 15 armor, you'll get a 7% increase, but if you have 65 armor and buy 15, you'll only get a 5% increase (just an example, not perfectly accurate) so in the reverse, if you have 65 armor and lose 15 of it, you'll take 7% more damage, whereas if you have 80 armor, you'll only take 5% increased damage once it's reduced. Armor DEFINITELY HELPS lmao cuz I know the numbers are much more drastic.

- Honestly, just look up winrates of your main vs Darius. If it's not below 50% just look for Rune and Item suggestions for that matchup and try to be good at it. - Your default assumption when even against him should be that he wins. - Make sure he misses his E pull, the cooldown is looong. - Always try to get pushed in and set up a freeze close to your tower. Makes opportunities for ganks ideal.
Even if Garen did become a pdf unfair champ with the addition of stride, he does allow skill expression: W, high movespeed and damage will let him catch you and your team offguard. I'm sad to say that he is not just noobstomper. They really should revert attackspeed changes on E. If you wanted dmg, lethality Garen was there, but even with speed on youmuus he was obviously slower than.. this nightmare.
What attack speed changes? His E attack speed has been this way for many yesrs. Also stridebreaker doesnt make Garen's base move speed faster. He builds other items like PD or DMP etc for that
Doran's shield and second wind with a high hp regen character like garen, mundo, sett, cho gath. And take ghost. Wait until they overstep up and pop ghost run them down.
