This tutorial on how to cover a 5 O’clock shadow was created for all of my wonderful transfeminine folks out there and anyone else who is interested in hiding the shadow left behind from shaving.
I’ve seen so many tutorials for this that teach very heavy drag-based techniques techniques with a ‘one size fits all’ approach to color correcting.
In this particular video, I break down the right color correctors & products to use for every skin tone as well as how to apply them in a way that gives you a natural, undetectable result.
I hope you enjoy it! Please let me know if you have any questions and don’t forget to SUBSCRIBE!
PS: Because this tutorial was created several years ago, my website now includes some offerings that are different than those listed in the video. You can check everything out here: www.theprettyfix.com!
Disclaimer: I am a cis female and am only sharing my expertise as a celebrity makeup artist. The two models in the video are a trans female who has been on HRT (thus the minimal shadow) and a cis male (to demo having a stronger shadow). Apologies on the lack of ethnic diversity…this video was tricky for me to get models for

@@kathrynliccione7590 I would try using peach in this instance, actually! Yellow can be used to neutralize redness, and peach is essentially pink + yellow combined, so it could possibly do the trick to cover both. Let me know how it goes!

Hello, I am sure this technique works but those 2 models don't have close to a 5 o'clock shadow. I have a darker shadow at 9:05 am then they do! Could we get another video explaining what to do with a true shadow? Other then that the video was VERY well made, clear and concise! The speaker was professional and a joy to listen to.

I know this was uploaded almost two years ago, but oh my GOSH, thank you SO much for this! I'm not trans, but I am a crossdresser and I do want to be as passable as possible when I go out in public CD'd. I do also struggle with covering my 5 o'clock shadow because I have dark hair and even though I shave a close as I possibly can, it STILL shows through my makeup..... I will definitely buy the products that I'll need to cover my 5 o'clock shadow and I'll follow this tutorial the next time I put on makeup and I'll try these techniques. Again, BIG THANK YOU!! :)

Thank you so much for this! I tried learning about makeup after I started transitioning last year, but got totally overwhelmed by every "beginner" or "basic tutorial being a huge number of products and steps, and anything I found for trans women have a bunch of info about contouring and other aspects, when my biggest concern was always just my stubble and shadow. I gave up on that because it didn't seem like I could address that with makeup without buying a ton products and doing an entire face routine every time I wanted to hide the stubble. I'm just dipping my toe back into makeup now, and for whatever reason this time I found your site, and this is just what I needed. Very concise and specific to this problem. I really appreciate that you separated this from the contouring and other guides, and especially that you showed everything needed for the corrector and concealer, including which brushes and how many. I also have ADHD so having everything visually on-screen is much easier to remember than just listing them out loud as you go.

Also, thank you for answering questions in the replies as well, all my follow-up questions (like why liquid corrector rather than powder or whether full foundation is needed) have been answered so far.

I used to do the orange face way learnt from countless tutorials and I hated how heavy all that make-up made my face feel. But I tried this method tonight for a party and it was really effective! Not perfect as I need to experiment with which colour corrector to use, and I didn't have liquid concealer just a stick but it all came together so well. It's a light quick method to cover up shadow! My prayers have been answered! Thank you so much xx

This is great advice, thank you! I'm not a trans woman, but transmasc/detrans woman. Although I love my beard, it does make me pass as male which isn't really what I want anymore. So sometimes I just want to be able to hide it to look more female. I first tried hiding my beard shadow 5 years ago and it did not go well. All I could find back then was one or two drag queens showing how they cake on layers of orange/red lipstick, concealer and heavy foundation. Doing that I felt like I was wearing a birthday cake on my face, and it did not look natural at all. This technique looks so much more promising! I knew it would be worth looking this up again, because a lot can be improved in the makeup market in 5 years.

As a woman with PCOS I can't tell you how grateful I am to you!❤ Just a question though, if I've applied foundation to the rest of the face, and continue doing my makeup, do I use powder only after I'm completely ready, or when I am powdering the beardshadow-area?

Melissa / Team Pretty Fix, do you have any good make-up kits that contain a good range of tools, and basic products that I might need in order to play various different characters in my videos? (I understand due to individual skin\facial hair colour there will not be a one-fits-all solution) but I just mean a decent kit (that I could order online, or on Amazon) that has some good quality make-up, brushes, setting powder, etc. Thanks so much! -AK

Hey there! I don't know of any 'kits' per se...one of the complications with makeup is that you have to buy so many things individually. I recommended some products in the description of this video, but I also have a self-paced makeup course called Makeup Made Easy that teaches you all the basics and shows you exactly what to buy if you want to check that out: www.theprettyfix.com/makeupmadeeasy

Omg thanks so much for keeping it real. this trick is useful to everyone with unwanted beard shade! (Cis Women too) tried it and it just looks so much more natural and lightweight! The lipstick trick thing gave a weird cast of orange or pink on my face and left it thicker then the glaze on a birthday cake 🎂 😂

Hi Thank you for this tutorial. I have seen many videos on the same topic. But found your video to be more easy to understand. I used to put little concealer to hide my shadow and it use to work most of the time. But when I saw online video for drag, they use lots of makeup, which had made me little confuse. If possible can u do complete mtf makeup? Thank you again :)

It definitely is strange that it's called a '5 O'clock shadow' because it definitely shows up way sooner for most people, I believe! And as bad as the internet can be some times, it is also super helpful for everyone to share their resources of knowledge and experiences :)

Thank you for the knowledge on concealing shadow. My question, how is the best way to apply eye shadow on heavily hooded eyes? Cat/fox liner or any help is appreciated.
@TheMakeupByMelissaM
@TheMakeupByMelissaM 4 года назад
You’re so welcome! So I have a video on tips for hooded eyes if that might be helpful, but I also teach a class on the topic from time to time! It’s a bit too much info for me to explain in a simple response. If you want you can follow me on IG @the_pretty_fix to know when I’m doing which classes...or you can check out my site directly www.theprettyfix.com.

I’m just a dude who loves a clean shave but my 5o clock shadow fucked up my other wise perfect glass skin 😂 iv found using a foil shaver (Andis ts1) gets close as a safety razor shave but you can do it every day so that’s good!! Then I use tone up sunscreen and then concealer over the shadow and it seems to work perfectly

Thanks for the advice 😊 Do I apply the corrector, concealer then setting powder before applying another layer? My beard shadow is really thick in spots even after 8 laser sessions (4 consecutive thanks to lockdowns) lol mostly just around my lip is the biggest concern. I've tried pixi by Petra concealer with nyx foundation, and I get a little better using jecca blac corrector and concealer. 1 layer isn't quite enough it works but up close I can see the shadow. I will try layering a light coat and see what happens. The only pink/peach I could find at shoppers drug Mart from nyx is a light pinkish doesn't work as well.
@mmurdick
@mmurdick 2 года назад
Hi! Yes, you would definitely apply corrector, concealer, and powder to set before doing additional layers. Finding the right combination of products can be tricky at first, but once you discover the right amounts of everything and what works it becomes a formula you can repeat over and over again :)

I have a shadow that is gray mixed in with some medium brown. My skin tone is fairly light. What color corrector should I try/use? Love your tutorials!
@TheMakeupByMelissaM
@TheMakeupByMelissaM 5 лет назад
Hi Wendy! Great question. Honestly peach is most likely going to be a safe bet for you because the color peach also inherently contains the color pink (pink + yellow + white = peach), so it covers both bases. One thing to remember is that you could also test a few shades to see what gives you the best results because once you figure out the ideal corrector, it shouldn't change! Even if it's a slightly annoying process of trial and error at first, once you've got it dialed in you are good to go :)

Thank you so much. I am a Trans Woman and this is so helpful. I usually just mouisturise and then but foundation and powder on. But ye I would still have some 5oclock Shadow so am so going to do this next time I do my make-up. I have a question do. Would I shape/feminise my face before or after doing this? I watched a video recently and he done it with two different colours but never explained if it was concealer or foundation that he was using. I think myself it might have been foundation orherwise he was using a hell of a lot of concealler lol.

3 years old video, but hope you can still help me out, so I have been trying to color correct every day now, only issue is even if I do all the steps it still shows, no matter what unless I cake a bunch in one area, it's very stressful (I've tried tweezing and emulating but skin is highly sensitive), its covered but it seems that it doesnt wanna cancel out the darker parts (it appears black/darker on the edges of the mouth)

Hi, your lovely. I have a question, when I use the setting powder I look cacky. Is their a setting spray then can do the same job as the setting poweder?
@TheMakeupByMelissaM
@TheMakeupByMelissaM 5 лет назад
Hi there! Sure! If you'd like to give setting spray a try, that could be a good option. I know a lot of people love the Urban Decay 'All Nighter', although I have not tried it myself. The only thing is that a powder will create the matte effect that visually makes the area look flatter/less bumpy, so keep in mind it won't have the exact same effect in that regard. Just another thought- more than anything, cakiness comes from too much product overall being used (rather than just the powder being to blame), so try to use a light hand and build everything up gradually if you can! Sometimes it's just about refining your technique with some practice.
