I made this particular knob handle for a gear shift on a truck. The same general idea can be used to cover many different types of tool handles.
1/2" leather lace is available in my Etsy shop: bransonsgeneralstore.etsy.com...

I am always working on building something and try to average a RU-vid video once a week. Most often they are about leather work, but I have also posted videos on black smithing, knife making, casting, and even how I make soap. Be sure to Subscribe if you are interested in any of these topics, or just making things in general.

An excellent explanation of how its's done. However the lighting was so dim I couldn't see what was going on. A brighter light would have helped. It was the same for the handle wrap video also.

Thank you! I have improved my lighting setup since I made this video and just haven't gotten around to redoing the videos.

I've been a fan and subscriber for quite a while and you are my go-to channel when I have a leather project. I was needing to learn the Gaucho knot and Eureka, here you have it. Thanks for posting. Love your work.

I like the finished product, but unfortunately I’m having trouble seeing what you are doing because the contrast is insufficient. I’m a visual person and learn by watching. Can you increase your lighting? Great set of vids. Donald

@@bransonsgeneralstore Are you tying a 5x4 turks head and then adding a gaucho interweave or another knot? Is it described in Grants book? Thanks
@bransonsgeneralstore
@bransonsgeneralstore 3 года назад
This is called a Gaucho knot of one pass in Bruce Grant's book. I am actually tying it a little different than in his instructions. Any time your working end gets back to your standing end it can be considered a finished knot. In this case I am stopping early, but on larger items you can just keep following the pattern and the knot keeps expanding to more parts and more bights.

@@bransonsgeneralstore Found it, thanks. Now I have to try tying it around a cylindrical object. I’ve always tied TH around a mandrel. Your vids are helpful and informative. Donald.

Nice video, thanks. A question: How do you calculate what width of lace to use to not either get gaps or just a too big knot? Any tricks?
@bransonsgeneralstore
@bransonsgeneralstore 3 года назад
This knot is useful because you can just keep tying until you get back to the standing end. Every even number of wraps around the knot will put you back next to the standing end. If you have space left tighten everything up and go around the knot two more times. If the circumference of what I am covering is approximately divisible by twice the width of the lace I am using it seems to work out.

What do you use to glue the knob on the truck shifter?
@bransonsgeneralstore
@bransonsgeneralstore 3 года назад
I just used 5 minute epoxy. It would also be possible to use a silicone adhesive or just make the hole in the knob small enough that it needs to be driven on for an interference fit.

what are the scissors used to snip the leather?
@bransonsgeneralstore

Tandy leather sells them as leather scissors item #3047-00. They are cheap, but surprisingly good. I have three or four of them around here.

Where do you buy the needle? And what is it called?
@bransonsgeneralstore
@bransonsgeneralstore 3 года назад
They are sold as a long jumbo perma-lok needle. You can buy them from several leather suppliers. I found an amazon link for one. www.amazon.com/Tandy-Leather-Perma-Lok-Needle-1193-05/dp/B001QJREO4/ref=sr_1_20?_encoding=UTF8&c=ts&dchild=1&keywords=Leathercraft+Lacing+Needles&qid=1606665872&s=arts-crafts&sr=1-20&ts_id=12897121
