That’s the best explanation of covering the ball I’ve seen. So clear and precise. The sweeping the cups analogy is brilliant. Thank you.

Anyone can teach, but what differentiates you from others is that you explain how it should feel. One of your best videos was when you threw clubs down the fairway to feel the proper release. Your info is awesome.

Thank you for your instruction. I came to "cover the ball" through working on another drill designed to establish my downward plane early in the swing. Essentially I started to "drop my arms" more behind me through a combination of gravity and force, keeping my right shoulder back. At the top of my swing, I would just slam the club head straight down into the ground, and then rotate. Eventually I started my downswing with the arm dropping, and it worked pretty well. Then, for actually the first time since playing for many many years, I felt "covering the ball". It's a new feeling for me and in my mind it feels like it occurs about left arm parallel, and it's an essential move in the golf swing. A "pull" has been my goto shot, and now that I've felt how covering feels, as long as I do it I don't think a 40 yard pull is possible. All of a sudden I see compression occurring...is that possible? I think it's just the new angle with which I approach the ball gives me that sense. Another benefit is I believe I could hit a ball from any lie, just because I'm finally coming into the ball correctly. Is covering the ball that elusive a feel that I could have missed for all my years? Thank you again for your instruction. I think I really see how covering appears in your swing. Oh, I think the sweeping off the table with your arm is helpful, but again I came to it from forcing my arms straight down behind me. In trying to come up with a feel that continues to work, so far it's either start the butt of the club back at the ball, or not just feel left pectoral pressure during transition, but sustain it a little more to allow the arms to drop into the slot.

Great video adam. I have a question relating to your cracking the towel anology. I can do it with half shots where I can feel the clubhead but as soon as that clubhead weight tips over on the backswing so it's parallel to the ground I lose feel for it. Have you got any tips for retaining feel for the clubhead on a full swing. Thank you
@Scratchgolfacademy
@Scratchgolfacademy 3 года назад
Simeon, It’s always harder to feel things in a full swing. Try a full swing at half speed, you may get a lot out of it Best, Adam

Hi Adam great video as usual! What is meant by getting ahead of the ball?
@Scratchgolfacademy

Thanks Graham. That would usually refer to your head getting past the ball before impact. Best, Adam

Thanx Adam, sir mr sneed's famous stooped stance, as per Arnold Palmer, (r.i.p), so myself, I try to stand far enough away from the ball to have to lean into the view, gifting myself plenty room to swing thru, but equally keeping my eye and head over the ball, to see 100% true club ball allignment first, in prep, and then in swing bring the club head around to the outer back quadrant of the ball at contact, engageing the meat of the iron onto the ball, totally wraping the mallet around the ball at impact, usually results in a profound draw thru flight, then adjust stance to straighten the shot, a tee allows full extension of the swing thru flick the wrists, as the club head has more room to swing thru vertically at point of impact, and also, with irons, the barer the lie, the better the impact! Haa, its fun when it goes all right ! My focus is more about covering the ball fully with the applicable mallet , like properly putting an egg in an egg cup, there is only 1 correct position for accurate 100% club head ball allignment, to see this from behind the tee, allows better point of contact.

Good advice. Keeping that right had bent back (in extension) all the way to your left thigh (one coach used the mental image of almost touching your left thigh with the BACK of your right hand) forces you to pivot (or rotate your hips) with weight on the left heel. If you don't pivot, the face would be pointing way out to the right and you would hit a block to the right. So you are naturally forced to make a good pivot. Making a pivot with the hips is always one of the hard things for more senior golfers and high handicappers. Its too easy to focus on spinning the hips as a separate action rather than as a natural part of a smooth swing. Getting into a good pivot as simply a natural component of the kind of swing you are describing to cover the ball makes doing that important part of the swing much easier. The other thing is if you concentrate as you show on moving through the swing with the right wrist staying in extension longer, and you let your body pivot, you will hit higher, straighter shots or perhaps a baby fade. If on the other hand you exaggerate the release and let the right hand turn over the left too early, you will hit many low trajectory left hooking shots, the kind that are the bane of most golfers existence.

And I was just working on this today! Adam, your range spies are earning their pay! I try to slow my backswing down so as to maintain control of my spine angle on the down swing. Please do a segment on swinging at 50%, etc. I have a devil of a time not just speeding up even if I want to swing slowly. Practice swings are just fine, but when the ball is introduced, the instinct to simply lash at it is seemingly out of my control.

So the idea of the hands/arms being underneath you through impact, that also applies to drives except for the case of driving the arms are more extended away from the body?

I have heard the term cover the ball with your hands. When I try to do that I feel I have no room to rotate and get the club face square. Can you shed some insight?
@Scratchgolfacademy
@Scratchgolfacademy 2 года назад
Jacob, Covering the ball is a term that refers more to the body. Oy applied to the hands I'd say it's tilting the loft off the club as it rotates through impact Best, Adam

My Irons are really spinny. I outdrive my group 95% off the time. But my iron distances are near the worst. Driver often carries 300. 7 Iron is usually 150-ish. Do you think this could be my issue?
