Hi thank you very much. I also tried to freeze 1st then hit on diagonally. I like to plant little stuff in it so the holes are handy. Will try your method. Take care love from South Africa
Being south indian breaking a coconut is something we do for fun for mother as a little boy. Not bcos she can't bcos we liked to drink the water. This is the same as we do but it takes just 3-5 strikes. For us coconut is a staple requirement in our currys and chutneys. Or just snack the flesh or milk it.
Yeah that one was not fresh the shell was dried out.a fresh coconut comes with the outermost fiber and green color. Those are the best and taste way different than this one he has in the video. Coconuts don’t grow in America until recently.

Child's play for any Indian.. Being a south indian who uses coconut for each & every recipe of ours, Mr. Masterchef this was extremely messy. Me being a novice cook will break open a coconut in exact half with just 2-3 strokes 😀😁 Non indians look like aliens to us so many times 😂😅
Thank you so much Chef Douglas because we live in countries where the economy is based on coconut but this was I am extremely unique way of opening a coconut with a knife . You may not believe it but I have two of these knives and an endless supply of coconuts just out of my door but I really did not associate the breaking of the coconuts, with a knife. We just go to the nearest stone and Smash them hard just once or twice and a crack opens. Apply to mouth drink the juice wipe your face with the coconut water for moisturising against the sun shine and Bob's your mother's brother! Of course when I am at home it is very easy for me to pick up any sort of sharp instrument and poke it into the the weakest eye of the coconut it has three. And then drain the water into a glass period period means.
Dang it, now I'm hungry as heck for some odd reason!! Time to fix me up some foodage!! Thanks chef for the amazing step by step I do truly appreciate it!!

Excellent Chef I managed to crack the coconut, I wasn't able to ypll the coconut outside the shell in the way that you did. What I did was to crack more the two pieces and the with a knife pull out the coconuit fruit from each piece of shell
just freeze it. then when you break the shell the whole coconut comes out clean in one peice. just put it in a freezer bag and let if warm up for later
Cold and snowy day, just found your channel and been binge watching. Obviously your a master yet A couple things id like to humbly share with you- I been taking avocados and halving them, just a touch of lemon juice, salt, pepper, an egg yolk where the seed used to be, then layer crispy bacon bits, then (i been using cheddar but convinced asiago would improve it 100 fold) cheddar. Bake that on 350. Its incredible! And possibly a good addition to your brunch menu. Try peeling a pineapple halving it, shalter it with butter(or ghee) then packing brown sugar around it. Bake at 320. I usually serve it over vanilla bean ice cream but suspect it would make an amazing chutney to have with an herb roasted chicken.
@Douglas D That is AWESOME! We are grateful you found our channel and are enjoying your binge watching. Thank you for sharing your tips. Sounds like you are on your way to mastery, keep learning and stay tuned for new episodes. God Bless!
I don't want to sound superior patronising but Desi Ghee, welcome to the fold this is India calling full stop to good health. If the butter is homemade the taste is exquisite and out of the world and that is why Julia child used it in large quantities. It is called one of the most good and beneficial foods in The Good Book.
Check out my tutorials on how to open a young coconut! Juicy and delicious! 😎 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UFSNe4Yjcww.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QlrSAyE4MCs.html
Thanks, It Worked! (Just consider wearing a Protective mask, and or Hard Plastic face Covering--pieces flew up to my face--thankfully, I wear glasses). Also, keep phone or tablet screens away from this activity, lest you don't mind a cracked screen, from a flying coconut piece. Again, Thanks
It honestly easier if you just use a palm size rock. One punch and youre already done. I do that often. You might wanna watch how asian do it. Asian always has the best trick.
Boy, as a professional chef, you struggled with that thing a LOT. A heavy knife like a meat cleaver works so much better. (I Watched a dozen videos, You made it look difficult!)
A concrete hard edge works way better the. A knife , and yes he sucks at opening this it’s all crumbly and old rotted out coconut. Not fresh at all. Probably taste vinegary too. Professional…. Lol, and fresh much less. I used to go to local fruit and veggies store every morning and crack these open with the hush on faster than this video took.
I've been using a 1/4'' thick British military MOD (Minestry of Defense) knife to crack mine, came here to find a better way, seems I was doing it right except I crack it around the middle and over the top & bottom.
Before you crack it chef... Put it in ice water for 5 min, take it out, one hard hit in a hard surface and it will split perfectly in half. To remove the flesh, place the coconut half face down in the oven and heat it up for 5 min med heat, let it cooldown, place pering knife between flesh and shelf and it should come out the whole flesh full.
this is a good method , but just in case you dont want to risk ruining your knife, you can do the same steps with a hammer instead, but keep in mind that if you dont drain the water before hand, it will spill everywhere. Enjoy your coconut :D
Bruhhhh...In the Pacific ..we hit it once with the knife and it opens up. This chef takes so many tries and made so many dirt. It does not even crack properly.

First, I take the coconut out to the garage. 😂 Next, I take the coconut over to the workbench; 🤣 Then, I open up the vise very wide..……hammer, chisel(s) and DeWalt drills come next followed by Milwaukee Sawzall……then I throw the pieces of the coconut I have destroyed into the garbage can. Return to the kitchen and tell my wife we need another coconut.
@@happysawfish If you look at the top of the nut you will see 3 spots that look like a face - 2 smaller eyes and a larger 'mouth'. Between the 2 'eyes' running laterally from top to bottom of the nut there is a ridge. If you strike this ridge at its widest point on a hard flat surface the nut will cleve perfectly in half with just on clean strike. There is a good video on RU-vid with a guy in Hawaii who shows how to do this even from picking the whole nut from the tree. Thats the proper way to do it without mess and effort and shards of broken nut flying around. Good luck matey.
Sorry, but that's still a complicated was, especially eben you want to collect the water. Netter Swatch fort "how to open a coconut and remove the meat" and look at the young Lady here! My motherinlaw in India does it the same way. Instead of a knife use the thin Side of a hammer.
as an indonesian people who lives around coconut every single day, this chef has to learn from asian people to know how to break a single coconut wihout wasting time. and that knife is too small and to fragile for coconut sir. indonesian people used a bigger knife for breaking it. its called golok. and we have machine to take the coconut out of it shells. wanna buy one? go to indonesia.
There’s an easier way just spin the nut around the equator while you drop it on a hard surface spinning on the way down and it will crack around the middle
Oh, God! Is he doing it for fun? Can somebody tell me is this the easiest way to crack open a coconut or the one which is showcasing on RU-vid? /watch?v=m_LHpQ5dIDw
That's absolutely hilarious.. 🤣 the weakest point in a coconut is follow the line in between the two eyes to the center of the nut ... One hard hit on that center line will crack it
1. The coconut is not mature. You can tell by the water being too much and meat too soft. 2. If you freeze it first, the meat comes out easier. 3. Use a heavier Knife (read machete) and you only need to hit it 2-4 times max.
