How to Crash a Reef Tank 101. *almost* (135g - 6/14/2020)

Where do I begin... just don't use any aerosol products around your fish tanks, whether it's Lysol or those Dust Spray in a can, they are all bad around an aquarium, especially one that has sensitive animals like a reef tank. I have had run in with both products and the results were not pretty! But in case something does get into the tank, water change would be key! The silver-lining of this incident is that I experienced my first big water change on the 135g and it was not as bad as I thought it would be! I guess I could work water change into the maintenance schedule. ;-)

Dude same thing happened to me. My wife has been doing that for years and I finally caught her doing it and politely educated her with a loud voice about the dangers of the spray.

Perhaps she needs a good talking to, if you don't mind my saying so. Perhaps a bit more. My wife, sir, she didn't care for the reef tank at first. She took a pack of matches, and tried to burn it down. But I "corrected" her, sir. And when the police tried to prevent me from doing my duty, I "corrected" them, too.

The only thing that ever worked for aptasia for me is a copper band butterfly. I tried doing Kalk injections, hot water, peppermint shrimp... Everything that everyone suggested. I finally broke down and got the copperband, and I crossed my fingers that he would adapt to captivity and keep them under control. He became my favorite fish in the tank, and he thrived. He even started taking frozen foods after being in the tank for a while.

As someone who has a 60g look at my mistakes and such I mean watch salinity carefully one mistest will cost you corals I have lost a few. I am overstocked at 16 fish in my 60g but with only a torch coral and flower nem left I am ok with being overstocked especially since all the fish are not fully grown and a few are less than half of the full size. I will pull out some eventually. Important tips: watch salinity, get "helper fish"- 2 tangs and my diamond watchman goby in my tank and finally feed heavy when getting new fish that are normally delicate. Check out my channel if you want fish examples

Tomentosus Filefish is the best thing for controlling aiptasia. I put one in every reef I setup and I never see any aiptasia in the DT. I do not keep anemones so be aware these fish could be a threat to other anemones you keep in your tank.

get another container the same size as the one you mix salt in and when you empty the tank water onto the gravel first pump it into the container so that you can measure the same ammount of water out as what you are planning on putting back in.

When I had some aptaisia in my tank, I got a peppermint shrimp and it got rid of every single one within a week. The only downside was that once all of the aptaisia was gone, it started going after my acans. It’s apparently not uncommon for them to go after acans or the like

I suggest filefish for aiptasia control. Out of 4 peppermint shrimp only one of them ate aiptasia. What happened to your filefish from the 45? Aiptasia x just spreads those buggers in my experience. Should be called aiptasia (infinity symbol).

Maybe try a copper band butterfly? I had a massive aptasia invasion, tried aptasia x and all other types of aptasia killing paste. Nothing worked but made it worse. When I added my copper band all of the aptasia in the display was gone in a matter of day’s and haven’t had one in the display ever since! Sucky part is can’t have a clam in it due to him/her eating it :/ but in terms of aptasia, copper band has been my best thing for it! Plus it’s a gorgeous fish!

trigger fish (Acreichthys tomentosus)! The only efficient solution or you may consider the berghia nudibranch but they starve once they have eaten all the aiptasias... Alright, in her defense, I teased her quite a bit before filming, so at this point she was just trying different methods to move on from the situation. The whole "your tank crash" has been a running gag between the two of us, where she would pretend to celebrate on any potential of it (a joke of course, since she was also the one that stayed up with me to fix up the 45g tank when it sprung a leak). Rest assure that she probably cares more about some of the critters than me behind the scene. 😉 I should have provided more context, hope this clears things up a little!

Unless you mix the whole bucket of salt at once you do not get the full benefit of the essential elements they settle out in the bucket uneven. This is the reason why I use instant oceans and dose accordingly to bring the levels to my standards for base elements at water change and use TMP all for reef on the tank for essential elements. I have found this to be a lot more stable a lot less money spent on salt more left for other tank costs you have to test a few extra times to get water change ready.

Always have a good activated carbon on hand for situations like this. It works wonders and it works quickly. I'm not sure if you normally use carbon bit it is certainly a good thing to have around. Personally I use it 24/7 but you will find tons of debate on whether that's a good thing or not. In my own tank I've always had success with that. I don't think you will find too much argument against using it when you suspect some contaminant in your tank. For Aiptasia I have had much luck using Berghia nudibranchs, they can easily be found online. Somewhat expensive solution but it's a natural control instead of using chemicals. Only problem may be the wrasses eating them.

I forgot what it was she was spraying around your tank, but it will not crash your tank unless she sprayed the whole bottle in your tank, I would imagine it would be as bad is spraying Windex on your tank which will only make your phosphates skyrocket. So if you start to see some hair algae growing that would be why so for a future reference ask the wife to keep all cleaning supplies out of the basement. 👍👌

Aptasia.. my thinking, Filefish: could attack some corals as they are "with caution" and personally I like my acans along with other LPS. Copperband: most last only weeks which is tragic and I like my fish to last. Peppermint shrimps fine if you do not have wrasses but otherwise could end up as a snack. You'd need a lot more aptasia before thinking about Berghia Nudibranch (saltyunderground.com/category/berghia-nudibranch-the-natural-choice-for-aiptasia-control), although again, wrasses may be a problem with them. For me unfortunately, that means Aptasia X and it's a maintenance routine. When I first see a new aptasia I blitz it if on rock. If in the sand bed I remove it at the next water change. It's a bit like playing whack a mole.

Try Berghia nudis for the aiptasia Moki, even better start a little breeding setup for them.

How are you measuring your salt?

I use the Hanna Salinity Meter to check it after it has been mixed for awhile, once it's close I confirm w/ a refractometer; I'm double checking since the Tropic Marin salt has bio-atif elements that the conductive tester may not pick up when it's freshly mixed.

Get some peppermint shrimp (Lysmata wurdemanni) - but definetly do RESEARCH if they're not proper Lysmata wurdemanni they may eat your Zoa's - get them from a trusted source - I kept 3 & never hadt them eat any zoa's.

I’d say get a filefish. My 125 gallon tank was overgrown with aiptasia, after a couple days of a having a filefish all of it was gone.

Hold on a second! I thought the basement was the fishroom/man cave. Why exactly is the wife in there all the time if you/the tanks were banished to the basement? Sorry Emily, even as a girl, I can’t side with you on this one. Even if my bf doesn’t like my mess of a fish area (in his house) he respects my hobby and doesn’t even go in the area.

Haha thanks for stepping in for me! We actually created a little yoga corner for her and the baby to chill at so that we could all hang out at night in the same area while still doing our own things - so it's all good! Just.. no more Lysol. 😉

Those hydrometers are wicked inaccurate. I can't believe you don't use a refractometer bro.
