All your videos are great, but this series is incredible. There is literally nobody doing a good job of walking you through the steps to build a guitar for the CNC, most of them move too quickly or are not actual guitar builders. The matchup of your building skills, your design skills (I'm an art director so I really appreciate your use of Illustrator) and your insane knowledge of 3D and CNC guitar production make you the best resource on RU-vid. Keep'em coming!!!

Hi Chris. Just wanted to say that your three videos that you've created constructing a guitar body for your CNC machine. After watching the three videos, I've learned a great deal about this Rhinoceros software, in which I was able to make a guitar body within four hours and have an alright grasp of the software, compared to spending 30 hours trying to learn fusion 360, which honestly fried my brain... Off to the races! :)

Great series Chris. I've been a solid modeler my entire adult life. It's cool to see the contrast in workflow of surface modeling... I remember back in the late 90's talking on the phone to Bob McNeel about Rhino. I bought a copy of it, I just never fully committed to it. It's come a LONG way since then.

Chris, with regards to the paraboloid, do you have a specific minimum thickness you like to leave for the heel? Obviously when you put in that recess you cut away areas that have the screws going through them....

A quite thorough demo, very much appreciated. Can the surfaces be moved (I'm assuming it's not creating a solid model just surfaces) so that the highest finished top surface can be defined as Z = 0.0 ? It's a common CNC programming constant, for a variety of very sound and logical reasons. Also, when you moved the wireframe (line) geometry for the pockets and holes up to the top surface, it appears as though this wireframe geometry does not necessarily need to be exactly on this surface to be used as reference to create extruded surfaces ("cutting" away the top surface in these areas). If, for instance, my wireframe geometry for a given feature is moved up to be at the level of the top surface, but it is located over an area of the top surface where it is curved and sloping down and away in both the X and Y axis. Can the wireframe geometry be moved not by a numerical value, but just moved up so that it is projected onto that top surface, maintaining its X & Y axis positioning, but following the curving and sloping of the carved top surface? I just had my questions answered, thank you. I'm comparing this software to Solidworks throughout and it really makes me appreciate having access to using that software that much more. Many of the features you created using two, three, or even four steps, are created in a single step, which includes access to all of the separate functions, and more, in Solidworks.

If you have to ask, it's going to be too overwhelming. But if you want to try for yourself, download demos of the software and see if it's for you.

Chris, if you are building a guitar that is not carved top or just requires 2D cutting other than belly cuts, do you still import your art in with a 14x18 binding box and create a patch for the top? Also, do you typically show or create chamfered edges on your guitars in Rhino/on CNC or you do you just sand/rout those in manually? I know Rhino has a Fillet Edge command (which I don't know how to use), was just wondering if you use that command for your models. Thanks!
@HighlineGuitars
@HighlineGuitars 4 года назад
If it's going to be a flat top, the box isn't necessary. If I want round overs or chamfered edges, I use those tools to create them.

Thanks for this! I am just learning CorelDraw and Rhino to build a bass. As a point of curiosity, what motivates you to split the 2d vs. 3d between the apps. Why not do it all in Rhino? Thanks!

Question if I may (it is your, among others, fault that I'm trying to build a guitar after all). I'm trying to plane my two body halves for jointing. My plane is either not cutting at all, or after turning the wheel, just a tiny bit, it starts to dig in and judder (chatter)? I would appreciate any thoughts. Getting the dam things flat and square I recon is up to me to learn but having a plane that works would be a start. Many thanks
