In this tutorial, i’m going to show you how to create a cartoon effect in Photopea. This effect is built up in stages using stacked effects within a smart object, and the exact settings to use for each filter is completely subjective, and depends on the individual image, and of course, your own personal taste.
But because it is a smart object, you can jump in and tweak any of the individual effects at any point, and tweak to your heart’s content… all non-destructively of course!
Here are some of the techniques/tools used in this Photopea Tutorial:
- Smart objects
- Shadow/highlights adjustment
- Vibrance
- Colour blend mode
- Various filters inc. Filter Gallery
and more!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Software I also recommend:
Topaz Gigapixel - amazing software for upscaling to much higher resolutions without sacrificing quality. It's a perfect partner to Photopea in my opinion. Check it out here:

I hope you like this tutorial! What I forgot to mention in the tutorial, was that because the image is made a smart object, you can double click it and then change the image contained. This will instantly apply the effects to a completely different photo :)

I appreciate the short format of this tutorial. I don't need to know the intricacies of each and every step, I just need to see a demonstration of how to re-create the effect on my own photo. I also appreciate that you provide verbal instruction, unlike a few other videos I've tried to learn from.

Hey PP Pro just wanted to thank you for these videos, they’re so helpful and easy to follow! For anyone that likes or has the time to be reading comments… I’m a frequent user of Pixlr but they have recently updated to only allow 3 saves per day so I’ve been forced to look else where for my image editing needs. Photopea has been a very welcome upgrade. Business needs have been quenched but this channel has excited me enough to use it for personal use. Can’t wait to surprise my buddy’s with some cartoony pics!

great video. What do I have to change in the settings of the interface (?) to have the detailed information on under my layer for what I changed for example like shadow, vibrance, smart filter etc just as in the video?

This was good but I like more when you explain everything in detail. In this tutorial I just followed along I don't know why we did what we did. And how the application would differ if the image differed. Thanks though I still learned a lot.

I totally get what you are saying, and I've been experimenting recently with more concise, 'to the point' videos, where I actually record the audio after the video, instead of as i'm working, to try to reduce how much I sometimes wander off track and start over-explaining (which I do all the time!) This was because on my analytics it was showing that the audience retention was dropping off at points where I was perhaps talking too much and people were losing interest. And in the few videos i've done with more 'straight to the point' style, the audience retention figures have definitely gone up - but I must admit, I feel like they sometimes lose the 'real' nature of the completely live, totally unscripted versions. The next tutorial will be back to recording everything real time, totally unscripted and i'll just make more of an effort to over-explain, um, err etc too much, and hopefully find a good balance. 🙂

@@photopeapro What! so the over detailed explanation was unscripted. You definitely have teaching in your DNA. I didn't want to be too critical of this video because I like shorter videos myself, they're less intimidating to click on. So I didn't want to discourage that. But as a beginner I liked it when you stated even basic concepts. Maybe professionals would not appreciate being told what a mask does over and over again. You do have it tough. I'll try to give you exact feedback on this video so you could reach your balance: IMO it could've have been just 2 min longer because I wanted to know: 1-Why you added poster edge from the filter gallery 2- Why did we uncheck lighting from the oil paint filter? and to how much extent should we adjust radius and cleanliness. What effect should we be expecting 3-didn't get the whole "clicking the cog symbol" to blend the filtered effect with the unfiltered one... I guess it just comes down to familiarity. If someone is familiar with these concepts then they would want you to hurry up. But they didn't feel like basics to me. Of course I don't speak for everyone. You should definitely do what keeps most people and yourself happy. And the channel growing. Thanks for taking the time to make these videos, you've made pp easier for many people.

@@fictionaddiction4706 It's not really possible to pre-script content like this I find, as I need to concentrate primarily on the on-screen work that I am doing, and just narrate along the way. It would be too distracting to constantly be reading from a script. The only thing I have is for more complicated images, a few notes on specific settings or adjustments that I can check to make sure i'm on the right track as I go along, but for the most part I just hit record and do everything real time. Of course, it often takes many attempts to get something that i'm close to happy with, but most of my videos are 'one take' and not edited together. It's difficult to edit videos where there is screen recording, as the audio always have to follow the screen, and vice versa. Much easier in talking head style content, as you can just jump cut to your heart's content :) To your point around the basic concepts, this is a balancing act for this channel. I know a lot of my viewers are beginners, but a lot are a bit more advanced, and as someone quite rightly pointed out to me in the community section a while ago, the channel is called Photopea PRO so cover all the absolute basics should not be a focus of the channel (as there are plenty of other PP channels out there showing all the real basics of course). So I try to keep the tutorials away from explaining really basic content, however I do try and make my tutorials in a way that is (hopefully) easy for anyone to follow along... whether they are a beginner or more advanced user. Also, i'll answer your questions on this specific video, as you are correct in saying I didn't really explain them in the video: 1-Why you added poster edge from the filter gallery: On its own, this wouldn't look great, but it's function in the combination of effects here, is to create a bit more definition and structure. 2- Why did we uncheck lighting from the oil paint filter? and to how much extent should we adjust radius and cleanliness. What effect should we be expecting The lighting mode allows some artificial brush strokes to become visible in the filter, which is not needed for this kind of effect as it would make it too busy and a bit messy. But for other uses, it might work great. Radius and Cleanliness settings make more sense if you play around with them when there are no more layers above them. Radius changes the size of the effect in that a low setting will look quite gritty almost, whereas a higher setting makes a larger, smoother effect. Cleanliness = amount of finer detail present... a high setting will lead to a simpler result, whilst lowering it will introduce additional smaller oil paint 'swirls'. But in this image, as there is an additional filter on top of the Oil paint, it completely changes how the original Oil paint filter would have looked on its own. The final look for this effect was a unique combination of filters and effects working together, that can be adjusted in many ways by tweaking settings of individual filters even just a small amount. 3-didn't get the whole "clicking the cog symbol" to blend the filtered effect with the unfiltered one... The cog symbol basically gives you an opacity slider for just that one particular filter/effect. In this case, I didn't want to reduce the opacity of the whole layer, as it would have diluted all the effects too much. However, buy using the cog I could reduce the opacity of just that one filter. I hope this helps! Thank you for the comprehensive feedback.

@@photopeapro Thank you that did help especially the cogs symbol explanation. I wasn't actually suggesting for you to prescript content. Besides I actually like your unscripted videos more. However a suggestion to make things to the point. Would be maybe to just record the audio separately later as you watch the video. Then if there are pauses in audio or video you can just freeze the image a bit or put in some music. I'm definitely no youtuber so this may just be a lame advice. Anyway thanks for taking the time to answer me and all commenters I appreciate this. I hope you do whatever works for you and just not care about anything because we'd still probably watch you. And exhausting yourself and feeling like this is a chore would be terrible. Take care.

is there a way to save filters to use again for another photo to apply with one click ?
@photopeapro
@photopeapro 2 года назад
Not properly, but there is a workaround. If you some up with a cool combo of filters on a smart object, then just save this file somewhere safe. Then when you want to try it on a different image, you can just load the effected file up, and drag the smart filter layer onto your new image layer. Of course, you will likely have to tweak the settings on a different image but it will get you close. Or alternatively, you could update the contents of the original smart object, and add your new photo in there, and save. It will then update and apply the same effects to the new photo. Hope that makes sense! 👍
