This tutorial shows you how to create a cinemagraphic using entirely FREE software! I show you how to create this effect using a combination of GIMP (a free photo editor) and Olive (a free video editor). Cinemagraphs are a combination of a photo and a video - with the photo usually containing a portion that is masked out, and the video displaying and playing behind the photo in that masked out portion. The final effect is a cool animation effect that has become really popular over the years.
I believe GIMP will be able to perform this effect entirely on its own when newer version come out with new animation features - but for now this is a great way to create a cinemagraph when using only free software.

Cool trick, thanks! Also: the way your camera and shot are set up, it almost feel all of the video is actually a cinemagraphic :-)

I've done this using Adobe tools but, now that I've dropped my Adobe subscription, it's good to know GIMP and Olive (just heard of Olive yesterday) have this covered.

@@DaviesMediaDesign Hello. Will Olive work for adding snow/rain video, over a gimp image? Thank you.

Thanks for your videos. I really enjoy your tutorials. In mt example i had few back pixels in the base image. Once i removed the back layers from the gif , it gives me a flickering with white pixels shows up on those back base image. Please advise to resolve this issue, thanks

after creating a second copy of the video, and place on a lower timeline than the original one, im not able to drag it the way you did it to loop the video (second method for looping) . any reason why?

Is this Olive editor safe as I have had more alarms, bells and whistles go off than I care to remember. I have downloaded but not installed
@DaviesMediaDesign
@DaviesMediaDesign 5 лет назад
I think all the red flags are because the publisher of the software is unknown (unlike, for example, GIMP or Adobe). Certainly download it at your own risk right now. Hopefully they will improve this as they continue developing the software.

Grizz Desu sorry this is a bit late but do you know if it has any watermarks because it’s free or no? Because I’ve been looking for a free video editor without any watermarks.

@@quackinggiraffe7844 Hi, I have used it again since and everything seems OK. Because it's a open source programme and new my P.C's security went to alarm mode. It's totally free.

Ripl delete, deletes the whole footage, not the empty space before it, why is this happening to me?

for some reason my 1920*1080 video is twice the size of my 1920*1080 picture... there must be better programs for this
@DaviesMediaDesign

There's more data in the video/animation. That's going to happen no matter what program you use.

Can you please tell me...I can create or make video in gimp yes or no ...tell me
@DaviesMediaDesign

No - GIMP does not do video editing. Check out Blender, OpenShot, Olive, or another free and open source editor.

I have no idea what you're up to nowadays, I just stumbled across this 2 year old video and wanted to give some constructive feedback, since I know in my own work this is often in short supply. It really, really bothers me how verbose you are. Like, to the point where the video was almost unwatchable even at 2x speed. For example, around 4:57 you say: "So we want to find the portion of this video clip where all of those variables are roughly the same, so we can just scrub the timeline here with the playhead by clicking and dragging the mouse and we can go back and test it out again so right here there's a pretty good spot right before the stream gets a little thicker there, so if I hit c on my keyboard that's going to bring up my razor tool or you can click over here, you've got all your tools right here, so the razor tool is going to allow me to cut the video clip on the timeline here, so I'm going to click on video clip and then it's going to cut the video right there, so now I'm going to hit v on my keyboard to bring up my regular mouse again, or you can click on the mouse over here, and I'm just going to drag my mouse over this video clip and hit the delete key, and then I'm going to come back, and now our video ends right here where we clipped all the rest of the video off, and now I need to determine where our video starts. And so right here is where I would say is where the stream is beginning that portion of being nice and steady, and relatively the same width. So now I can hit c on my keyboard again to bring up that razor tool, click here on my playhead and that will only cut our video clip right there in the playhead, and then I can click and drag on the keyboard to bring my regular mouse back up, so I can click and drag my mouse over this clip, hit the delete key again, and now we have just this short segment of our video". This is how I would say this: "C will give the razor tool, V will give the mouse/selector. Choose the right points for your clip, I'll just speed this up. You can see I matched up the start and the end frames." This cuts down the explanation from 1 minute to about 10 seconds. Again I don't mean to be an asshole, thanks for the video, but really, if you're still this verbose in newer videos I would say it is a serious communication problem. You also spent the first minute or so not discussing the major points of the video, and I was very hesitant to keep watching. I'm sure you might lose people in that first minute, maybe add all that information at the end, or cut out the obvious bits. Anyways, hope you can take this feedback in stride, have a good one man.
