Funnily enough, the only reason I'm here now at 200k subs is because of ONE thumbnail change. Such a small thing managed to snowball into me improving my content and actually realising that youtube is 99% skill and 1% luck, and that one video that blew up because I changed my thumbnail has made me go from 4k subs and 4000 views per video to 200k subs and 100k-1 million views per video
I accidentally blew up mine. I wanted a good video with my fave tv series character (who my channel is about) laughing - I found a nice one and it's very fun and wasn't planning on trying to make a blowup video only having something fun BUT - I didn't expect it to blow up like it has. Over 15, 220 views and it was only posted in March! Can't imagine what it will look like when autumn comes.
@SimplyWillz yeah you can look at mine for proof too. Mine's not what I consider crap though. It's very fun. I just didn't think it would blow up like it has.
I have watched this video probably over 20 times. I am done just “casually” making RU-vid videos. And I am now starting to take it seriously, as if I am running my own business. This is such a brilliant video and really shows you each and every step on how to go viral. I currently have 20k subscribers. I will come back to this video at the end of this year when I have over 100k subscribers, to show that this video works. It is my dream to become a big RU-vidr, and I won’t let my dreams go. Edit: I did it
Easily expected your channel to have 300k+ subs after watching. Really great editing, lighting, and explanations throughout-I know how hard it is to get these right, and you absolutely killed it. Hope to see more of what you do in the future!
This was exactly what I needed to hear. I MUCH prefer spending a lot of time on one video but it felt weird having an inconsistent posting schedule. Over the last few months I prioritised quantity rather than quality which resulted in a lack of motivation to create. I feel like I now have a clear vision of how I want my content to be. Clear, purposeful and quality. Thank you!
I love the message on this videos. However I think it’s EXTREMELY important to find a clever way to ask people to subscribe to the channel and make it memorable. This video has 1Mil views and I would have expected him to have at least 100 Thousand subscribers because of the views of this video. I then realized that I couldn’t remember him asking me to subscribe. I remember him telling me how to NOT ask people to subscribe and that was funny and memorable but I can’t for the life of me remember him telling me to subscribe and I think that was a mistake.
@@kandoundou23 Yeah I agree, asking people to subscribe STRAIGHT to face is a social archaism on RU-vid. It feels triggering and useless nowadays (I can say as a viewer, and I don't like do it as a youtuber too). But integrated ask can be really instead of it.
RU-vid is about constantly learning, adapting and growing. Eventually you will figure out what works and what doesn't and make better and better videos
Very good video! Super informative. I've watched hundreds of other videos promising what this video promised in the title and this is the only one that really delivered. Haven't heard this stuff elsewhere! Thank you!
Thank you so much for this video. Even though I don't consider myself a beginner anymore, I still remember getting started. It was a tough journey. Of course, things are a lot easier now and I'm super grateful that I didn't give up and stayed patient and all the way through. Consistency (and a little bit of Famester) made it possible for me!
in brief: 1. **Introduction**: - The potential of a single killer RU-vid video to change a channel's trajectory. - The importance of understanding what makes a video great. 2. **Planning**: - Before filming, it's crucial to plan and understand why people would click on your video. - The significance of having an interesting video idea. 3. **Title & Thumbnail**: - The title and thumbnail are the first things viewers see, and they should be compelling. - Successful creators prioritize the title and thumbnail before other aspects of the video. - Tips on creating intriguing titles and thumbnails. 4. **Scripting**: - Scripting is a vital step that can make filming and editing easier. - For educational videos, focus on what the viewer should do, feel, and know. - For entertainment videos, consider the big idea, the emotions to evoke, and the content to include. - The importance of the hook and intro in grabbing the viewer's attention. - Visual planning: Decide on the visuals that will accompany each part of the script. 5. **Filming**: - The filming process should be efficient with a clear shot list. - Emphasize showing the story rather than just telling it. 6. **Editing & Pacing**: - Pacing is critical to keep the viewer engaged. - Re-watch edits multiple times and cut out any parts that don't add value or are boring. - Every part of the video should add value to the viewer. 7. **Conclusion**: - The importance of enjoying the process of creating RU-vid videos. - Mention of Jon Dorman's web app, "plannervid," to help in designing and creating RU-vid videos. The video emphasizes the importance of planning, creating compelling titles and thumbnails, scripting with purpose, effective filming techniques, and the critical role of pacing in editing. The overarching message is that with the right approach, anyone can create a killer RU-vid video that has the potential to significantly boost their channel.
I've now started to plan my title/thumbnail BEFORE writing the rest of the video and it makes such a big difference. The right title/thumbnail combo can make your hook much more effective! Great video!
Right?! You gotta test a lot. Imma test 5 or so thumbnails for this video and every video. Because I wish I could say I know all the answers... but I'm not even close haha. But if you know how to test and iterate on hypotheses, that'll take you a long way.
Like sketching before actually drawing your final output, the tip about creating a script and spending a good amount of time reviewing it is already a good sign that you are on the right track. I love how you presented these tips without making it too lengthy. I actually watched it twice and took notes on my second watch. Thanks for this!
There is no debate when there is luck involved in anything related to success. But often we forget that the trial and error behind that capitalisation on luck is a great foundation for it. This video is honestly about as good at teaching you the basics as I've seen, content doesn't really come from nowhere and a lot of those important variables you managed to pinpoint and explain incredibly well! Although there is a lot more involved in the process outside of this, I wish everyone their best in making the most out of their content!
Nice video but I find that Shorts work really great for me on my second channel. I mean, I am just small content creator and I work really hard (I also use a little bit of fames-ter, but that's a necessity nowadays). I just give all my videos small initial boost, and that caused them to spread literally everywhere, bringing more and more organic views day after day.
I found you trough your Niklas Christl video and wachten every video since! You are an awesome creator, I wish I could help you out on this journey in some way :)
I LOVE HOW YOU RECORD YOUR OWN "STOCK FOOTAGE TYPE BEAT" B-ROLL, WITH YOURSELF AS A MAIN CHARACTER! Thats noticeably more work, so please know its appreciated
This is incredible! It’s actually a masterclass. I rewatched the video and was able to see quickly when, how and why I got hooked, you literally did everything you taught us to do. I appreciate the transparency, it wasn’t the usual “you don’t need this camera or software but I have five of them and a lifetime membership with premier pro” you literally showed us how you did it all and evidence of your process is this video! Now I TRUST you! Subscribed!
Helpful, video! I'd add: as a creator, I actually come in with a TON of concepts & stories that are interesting to me. When it comes to finding the "killer idea", what I'm currently working on doing is 1. filtering to the ideas that I find most compelling, 2. writing a few drafts of the script until I'm clear what the heart of the topic / explanation is, 3. THEN asking, "what question or framing really makes this concept leap to life?" I think the process of finding a "killer idea" is less about gimmicks or random brainstorms, & more about understanding something so deeply you uncover what will make it fascinating to others, too.
That's what we like to hear, go for it! And if not this one, then the next one and the next one and the next one. You can do this forever. Stay strong 🔥
new channel that started two months ago - I dropped out of school and a job I hated to try and make this channel, sharing what I love (cooking and storytelling) with the world. Your advice is amazing. You inspire me.
Hands down one of the best informative videos I've seen about creating a video for RU-vid. He got right to the point and made such valid points. Thanks so much Jon!
RIP dan's travels hahhaha. Great video and following all of these tips will further separate you from the crowd not only because of the principle of each tip, but also because many people won't be willing to do all of this work and you will immediately be apart of a select few that will
Wow! Never realized how much planning goes into making a killer RU-vid video. Been using an app called boost app social to improve my Insta and TikTok. It's got AI tools for captions and even profile enhancements. RU-vid game still needs leveling up though. Anyone got tips?
Great job man. This was one of the best I’ve seen. You’ve utilized everything you said in the video for this video and obviously it worked. Also, loved that you used REAL examples. I’ve heard the same things multiple times but the way you presented it was next level. Again kudos.
Two years in and I bet some of your subscribers come back to this video time and time again. I know I will. Job well done, and thank you, THANK YOU. 😎 🎖️
Facts!!🙌 Also once your video blows up, now you have to make similar content consistently so that your audience keep on engaging (Because people forget about you very quickly)
Hey man, I don't know if I can express how much this content was rich in information for me! I had literally never seen a video that held me from start to finish, wanting to watch it again to learn more! I'm starting my channel now and I intend to make some changes with everything I learned today and I hope in a while to look back and see such evolution that this video has provided me! THANK YOU SO MUCH!
That was a great video, one of the best on this topic! You've put in so much work into it to benefit viewers. You too are already a success, Jon. Thanks a ton for this video, really appreciate it!
Great breakdown. Can confirm scripting before any filming is a HUGE time saver - obviously. Currently fighting the early stages of getting that audience and your tips are much appreciated.
We have a New RU-vid educational channel on the block !! Kudos Jon !!! I keep following this type of content and oh boy !!! Your channel has arrived !!! I won't be surprised to see you hit 50k, 100K+ in matter of days !!! All the best Jon.... Look forward to seeing you grow !!! The content of this video was spot on !! Would love to catch up with you someday !
Jon, pure gold! Thank you so much for highlighting the need to generate killer ideas FIRST followed by the thumbnail and title. I have definitely been doing everything backwards, having an idea that I would like, or at least think my audience would like, and then plowing into the filming, and then work on the thumbnail and title while my video is uploading. I really appreciate your advice!
Dude the fact that you have 33k subs is insane! you deserve at least half a million for this video alone. the accuracy, the usefulness of the info, the editing, the organization... everything is top notch! please keep on posting 💯
Wow, this video fills in the missing key elements. I love how you broke down the process step by step and provided actionable tips on how to create a killer video. I can't wait to implement your advice and see the results for myself.
It really hit me when you talked about enjoying the process. It’s only been in the last week or so I realized that it's the lengthy recording process I've been doing that's holding me back from making videos at all, so I've decided to change to little snippets of my art process I stead of the entire thing and see how that works for me for a while. Great video, thank you for the inspiration!
In one video I watched a while ago it was said that you need to at least have two of these to succede as a youtuber: good personality, good editing and valuable content. And I think you have all of those seriously, like everything is sooo goooood!!
Jon youyr videos, the story telling, the structure, editing, and creativity are amazing! Watching your channel from 2k, it has a HUGE potential! I can already see your channel blow up in a creators niche! Good luck! Great job!
You just said everything well & amazing in these 17 minutes And in my opinion, every minute was detailed and interesting because you explained in informative, funny and happy way😌 Especially the part were you started putting some quotes, was motivational ❤️ Thanks man! I am thinking to follow your advices & tips to my own channel right here :)
WOW ! I didn't feel like skiping the video even for a second. I subscribed and hit the bel icon somewhere in the middle. You truely have done something outstanding here and most importantly thank you for sharing these invaluable insights. we need more like these
A shot list?! I don’t know why I never did this before. I always find myself moving cameras and lights all around my living room to get one shot only to have to reset all over again. Awesome vid, thanks for sharing!
BRAVO!!! So this is how its done! Value from start to finish... Practice as you Preach, Awesome. And like ZERO Ego. Thanks Dude!! TOP SPOT IN MY BOOK..
This is one of the channels that gave me the courage to start my RU-vid channel 7 months ago about self development. Now I have 625 subs and > 100 hours of watch time. I know it’s not comparable with others but I’m still proud I started because I’ve been learning so many lessons that I could haven’t learned without getting started in the 1st place.
What a useful video, I just changed the titles of my videos because of this video, you made me understand the difference between a good title and a worthless title. Plus all the other tips. I encourage you to make more videos. Thanks, Jon.
Trust me i WISH i knew everything too haha, but that's what's fun. There's ALWAYS something to keep learning and improving. Pleasure to have you here man!
This is the best video I've seen on this topic. You have a great talent of keeping your audience engaged with the way you speak, your aura is comforting and quite inspiring, and by the end of this video I realized in some ways what I've been constantly doing wrong with my videos. Also, this is the first time I've come across your channel, and you've earned a subscriber. Thanks for this, I definitely needed to watch this video!
I never subscribed so quick on a youtube video making tutorial. Been on this platform since 2010, now starting a new channel and refreshnig my memory on this, this content how it is composed and told, gold medal.
It seems like it's important to acknowledge a trade-off: we have some control over whether a video blows up, by putting more time in to the elements you describe in the video-but there's also randomness we don't have control over. Not all great videos blow up. This seems easiest to explore through edge-cases. On one extreme end of the spectrum we might put all of our effort into making the HIGHEST quality video, taking a full year to make one video. But if luck isn't on our side, it might be energy wasted, as it just doesn't happen to catch the mysterious variables of the algorithm. On the other end of the spectrum, we could make a video every day of the year, putting little time into the important elements. This also seems sub-optimal as the quality is unlikely to drive any of our videos to blow-up status. So it seems like there's a sweet spot somewhere in the middle. Where we emphasize quality, but also roll the dice consistently enough to maximize the randomness element. It seems to me like your recent videos are an example of this. In my opinion their quality is as high or higher than this video, but they got less than a 10th of the views. Perhaps trading off a little bit of the quality for more rolls would be helpful?
It's interesting that when somoeone basicaly tells you that he loves you and then he tries to sell something off camera you don't feel hate. You're just happy for him. It's such a smooth transition. Thank you for this valuable lesson man.
Thank you. For a person like me who has been interested in becoming a RU-vidr, but didn't know where to start you broke it down in a way that I now know that i can't practice and become better. And know areas to focus on. This video is: A KILLIR VIDEO 😊. perfect!!
Honestly amazing video man... With school and all I was always worried with not having enough quantity, but after watching this, I'm more relaxed of truly focusing on quality over quantity, so hopefully even with school I can make some "killer youtube video[s]" ;)
Being able to make videos and also have a positive impact on other people's lives is literally a dream. It just may seem impossible because you are not as creative or you dont have confidence in yourself, and im speaking from a personal perspective but also hope someone else finds similar issues as well and note that. no one is perfect but everyone who wants to become a content creator but isnt as creative as other creators. just be yourself and communicate with your audience on what they want to see
Okay so this was actually entertaining and beneficial. Dope! Thank you for the great tips 📝 I’d be happy if I could edit videos just as half as good as you 😭
I love this video - get me more inspired to make more videos and gained knowledge how to do it effectively. I am so excited to apply all the things I've learned from you. God bless :)
Man that was so inspiring, I'm glad I caught this video early in my youtube journey. Thanks so much Jon this video is going to take my channel to the next level!!!
I'm confused cause my "blown up" (relatively) videos were my very first ones and really bad quality, horrible thumbnails. They still make the majority of my views. How can it be?!
Great video Jon! I’m interested to know. Does RU-vid “punish” people for inconsistent upload schedule? Personally I believe in uploading quality videos not in quantity, but a big RU-vidr recently told me that that strategy can’t really help a small RU-vidr grow. Would be interesting to know your take on this…
Hey! I recently watched a video from *Film Booth* , another youtuber who does videos on RU-vid and its algorithm, and it actually answers this. On RU-vid, uploading consistently is great and all, but it's always better to go quality over quantity. What he did was upload less often, and instead spent his time changing the titles and thumbnails of his older, less successful, videos. That way he could still gain views and subs, but he was gaining then from his old videos instead of his new ones. It gave him more time to upload quality videos without letting his channel "die". Go check him out (I can't link him because my comment may be blocked) and watch his recent video all about it. It actually quite interesting and it really opened my eyes.
@@DiamondDepthYT Thank you. I’ve seen that video before. While it’s a great idea, I don’t think you can constantly keep changing your RU-vid thumbnails as a way to sustain your channel. I recently heard Colin and Samir say that inconsistent upload is also not great for a small channel. Bigger channels get away with it because many people know them and know their faces but for smaller channel, people forget your channel and the last impression you made on them if you take longer to upload.
Yeah I've seen it go both ways. Think less of YT algo and more of human psychology. Too many (wannabe) RU-vidrs spend their life guessing the algorithm... and as a result they never actually DO anything. Paralysis by analysis. Consistent sounds better to me from a human perspective right?
@@JonDorman correct. If you ganna upload 1 killer video but in a month we have to wait to watch your next videos but creators who upload more with quality like 1 video a week will have more changes to get subs and hence he wins... I am also waiting for your videos since I watched your video on Niklas Christl
Great video- was pumping out videos for several months and none gained any traction. Started making videos that take me a lot longer. I hope that they gain some traction
