These days, I'm more into LN power system than Comic/Manga (especially shonen) due to the complexity. In LN you can't spam your Multiverse-Buster attack like in Shonen manga due to some power system.

When building a magic system, I always consider what kind of a story I want to tell. Since I'm more of a character driven story teller, I always go for a more soft-hard system but varies to rational to irrational. A more flexible but limited power system. It's what I use for my space opera/superhero story, along with the various alien abilities most species have.

That’s so interesting that you’re mentioning that. I have a similar thing. I have a magic system along with the biological abilities of the different alien races. The magic system they can all learn but the biological and genetic abilities you can only be born with.
If you are contemplating whether your story should have a soft or hard magic system, you are writing it from the wrong direction. The question you should be asking is what your point of view character knows about the magic system. If it is a normal person, the magic system is soft and if it is a wizard, it is harder. Someone in the comment brought up Berserk, which is an excellent example. Berserks magic system was soft, until a witch became one of the main characters. Magic in Berserk still works the same as before, but now that we have someone who understands how it works, the magic system is hard.
What i loved about Berserk is how it seemingly starts off with a soft magic system but as it goes on and Schierke starts explaining how the astral realm works it becomes a solid hard magic system and honestly one of the best explanations for magic ive seen in any other series.
That adds to my theory that deciding if your magic system should be hard or soft is looking at it from the wrong direction. Instead you should be asking how much your point of view characters know about the magic system. The magic system is the same as before Shierke got added to the party, but now there is a character who understands the system.
try reading Lord of the Mysteries, arguably the best and most complex explained magic system. It’s like Berserk how it bases itself in realism but multiplies itself tenfold. It explains it so well, it damn near makes it feel like you could do it in real life.
I think I lean a bit more soft with magic systems(like 60% soft, 40% hard) because I think leaving room for possibilities is important so the story doesn't become too rigid, but at the same time, having too soft of a magic system can lead to some lazy conclusions for battles/story arcs
I get ideas for magic systems from games. My biggest inspiration is Magicka. In the game you use magic by tuning and combining basic magical elements Life, Death, Water, Earth, Fire, Air, and Lightning. They have synergies and Counters so not all elements can be mixed like Life and Death do not mix and if two Wizards were to use the opposite elements on each other Life and Death would mix into a chaotic explosion. The Wizard needs to understand the fundamental elements and how they flow to effectively cast more complicated spells. This makes it 50% Hard and 50% Soft magic and works flawlessly as a result.
I’m writing a battle shonen about battle priest (although some call them sorcerers) that fight using sealing techniques. Attack seals, protection seals, charm seals, sacred seals, and reverse seal. It’s actually pretty technical so I’d say it’s a hard magic system
@@stuzzy2053 Thanks let me give you a quick example, I like hearing others feedback. So there's three types of priest. (Alterers, Tamers, and Influencers) One character is an influencer so now he can control water, but that doesn't mean he can create it. So he sealed a part of the sea inside of his body. Now whenever he's fighting in a dry location he can release one of the sealing circles on him to have access to water (without having to carry around a giant container like Gaara from Naruto)
My power system at the begining of my story doesn't make a lot of sense, but as story progresses viewers and characters start finding out more about it until eventualy almost everything is clear, but to explain it all i also planned to make a part of the story which will talk only about origin and history of the main power source. That part will probably be made after the end of whole story to explain everything. Also one of the powers in my story appears later and eventualy it starts working together fused with the main power.

So Nen from Hunter x Hunter would be a pretty hard magic system (It's full of clearly defined categories and limitations), and Ki in Dragon Ball would be a very soft one (hardly a system at all, they just use their lifeforce to make whatever stuff happen). Chakra from Naruto would be somewhere in between (A defined system, but a lot of random unexplained stuff can be done with it). Then, Stands from Jojo's bizarre adventure would be a soft one, because stands leave so much room for creativity that the concept itself is undefinable? But then, each individual stand has clear limitations. How does this classification work for power systems where each person has a completely unique ability?
Warning: I'm gonna ramble I suppose those types fall under a new category, and this soft-hard classification can then be applied to it. There are unique-ability power systems such as stands where there are no limits or rules to what an ability can be. A comic I have made had a power system based on each individual's zodiac sign, and their special ability had to be related to the element attributed to that sign and also make symbolic sense with the sign's meaning, but under those rules there exists creative freedom. People with the same sign still had different abilities from each other. For example, one Scorpio could control a deadly poison while another could release boiling water from his hands. One Libra was able to absorb kinetic energy from enemy attacks and reflect it back in the form of wind, while another was able to control air pressure. This would be an example of a relatively hard magic system within the unique-ability category.

Nen is soft also chakra too, there is no limit in what you can do and why you cannot do, you can have everyone doing whatever they want as long as they fit in one of the categories of not you can say it is specialist and with chakra the same, you can say that it was yin or yang release
I would say Stand is a hard magic system, the content is soft but when you apply that to the characters the limitations are pretty clear, each stand is unique and each stand have one define ability (unless it evolve or requiem)
my favourite hard magic system is nen from Hunter X Hunter, I love how it turns battles into a game of chess to death and It almost feels as if its designed to handle future extensions without them feeling forced. on the other hand my favourite soft power system are stands from jojo's bizarre adventure, I love how this power system allowed araki to create infinte number of characters and give them characterisation through the powe system itself, but what makes this power system truly great is its creativity and its visual aspect. Im always astonished how araki can bring some of the wackiest and most abstract concepts into a paper. literally from all the fiction I've seen so far the concept of *erasing time and leaping past it* is still the weirdest thing I've seen in manga with very few coming close. Im only cut up to part 5 and I've read a bit of part 6 and I cant wait to see stands from part 7 and 8 because I've heard those are really weird.
If you like weird stuff and you're only up to part 5, you're in for a treat, I tell you that much. It's getting even weirder but I don't want to spoil you. To stay within part 5 King Crimson's ability isn't even that odd in my opinion, just look at Baby Face and how simultaneously disturbing and creative it is. But it's all subjective anyway, what's important is that it's a fun read/watch.
The overall conceit of stands is soft, in the sense that a stand could be anything, but stands are on overall hard magic system because each individual stand has hard rules it follows in how it works.
Chakra to me is one of the most lazily defined power systems because Kishimoto broke his rules instead of remaining simple and consistent like Toriyama and Oda did with Ki and Devil Fruits. Oda even made it better by making Haki and that everyone has the potential to utilize it

I really like the way Masashi Kishimoto did Naruto's system. I strive to make something akin to that in my fantasy story. Also another great video! Keep them coming, I actually had to take notes on this video haha
When building a Hard system or a Hybrid, I highly suggest taking inspiration from TTRPGs(or DnD style tabletop games if you don't get it), and multiplayer competitive Video Game balancing(both in lore and in gameplay). There are some things in the design you could learn or take inpiration from. EDIT: I forgot to mention; there's a very good manga/anime power system within _"World Trigger"_ (btw, season 3 is airing right now, you might want to watch the whole thing). You can also take some inspiration from it, looking at how it handles a hard system in the setting, but also a somewhat soft one using outside forces from it.
My "magic system" is heavily inspired by science (I love FMA) but it seems like some of my characters will keep discovering rules of their powers to the very end of their story so I guess this is more like soft power system? And well, this "magic" is more like extremely advanced technology that will be słowly explained, a "sixth sense" with vague rules and I guess that's it. Maybe I should be more specific?

ive had my power system planned for a while, at first it was frustrating because i kept trying to copy quirks from my hero but once i got into harder and more complex systems (HXH,Naruto,Bleach,Apple Black, Radiant etc.) i realized how expansive powers can be and how you can use energy to do cool and crazy shit so i kind of retconned everything, though i wanna make sure it can make sense with any power i give a character,cuz that's what i wanna do (was inspired by Cursed Energy and Nen for this one) itw based on an energy called Inertia, like chakra,mana,ki all that stuff. And it evolves into an abioity overtime but you can still mabnipulate the energy aspect of it along with your innate ability, so i wanna see hwo i can play around with that. These videos gave me a new perspective on things like this, thanks so much!
If you think about it, the power system in Pokemon has a lot of potential to be a hard magic system cuz every type(even dragon type) has a logical weakness, if someone took inspiration from it and combined it with the power system from Naruto, it would be a pretty interesting power system
@@MonitorComics Honestly, that's less plot armor and more using the abilities of a Pokemon in ways that the games' systems simply don't allow. When you use a fire attack, it should logically be able to be aimed at more than just the opponent and burn more than just the opponent.
another anime with a good power system is Chainsaw man, whilst it is simple (the devil name is feared the stronger it gets) which explains why the gun devil or the hell devil is so strong, and the reason why Denji is so strong to, because everyone in the world has the primal instinct to be scared of chainsaws
I think I have a pretty good power system. It's called "Matriximinary." It's basically a system that allows the wielder to create almost anything they desire out of thin air. However, it requires a great deal of skill, as well as a deep understanding of the balance between creation and destruction. This power is made up of seven elements, each with its own unique properties and characteristics. These elements are known as: 1. Energy: the force that powers the Matriximinary and enables the user to create. 2. Matter: the physical substance that is created using the energy. 3. Catalysts: special materials that enhance the properties of matter. 4. Patterns: complex designs that guide the energy and matter into specific shapes and forms. 5. Dimensions: layers of reality that exist beyond the physical world, which can be accessed and manipulated to create unique effects. 6. Time: the ability to manipulate the flow of time, allowing for the creation of objects that exist outside of it. 7. Will: the mind's ability to conceive of and manipulate the other elements of the Matriximinary To use the Matriximinary, the wielder must first understand the interplay between these seven elements. They must learn to harness and control the energy, mold the matter into specific forms, strategically use catalysts to enhance properties of the matter, utilize complex patterns to guide the energy and matter, access different dimensions to achieve specific effects, manipulate time to create objects that exist outside of it, and lastly; exercise their will to summon forth the creation from the depths of their imagination. While the potential for creation with the Matriximinary is virtually limitless, there are limitations: For one, It requires great care and control. The slightest misstep or miscalculation can have catastrophic consequences, and the process of creation itself can be mentally and physically exhausting. As such, those who wield the Matriximinary must be highly disciplined and possess an unshakable will in order to master its power. Overall, I think Maxitrximinary is a pretty good system. It's definitely one of my favorite power systems I've created. However, it's a bit too complex. But, then again, It's very cool. It took me a long time to properly figure this out as you could probably guess, and yes, I did take inspiration from FMA :)

Hey I commented this before but my account got deleted. The power system of my story: First of all, the energy system is called *Chroma.* From greek for color and the intensity of a color. Now before explaining Chroma I should first stablish two groups. Commoners and Gifted. Pretty self explanatory, the Gifted people are those who can use Chroma to fight. Just a few have this ability, mostly because a lot of Gifted people were exterminated years ago. Now, each "Sub-category" of Chroma itself is separated for a specific group of people, faction or "tribe". The elements are the following: Chroma Natus. Nature, plants. Chroma Aquos. Water. Chroma Pyrus. Fire. Chroma Petra. Rocks and minerals (including metals) Chroma Noxius. Poison. Chroma Volta. Electricity. Chroma Terra. Earth magic. Chroma Cryos. Ice. Chroma Aero. Wind. Chroma Spectrum. Underworld/necromancy/ ghostly. Chroma Vitae. Life force/ regular "Ki" of shonen. Chroma Psi. Psychic capacities. Chroma Umbra. Dark energy. Chroma Lumina. Light energy. Chroma Technus. Technology related. If you're born in the Fire element people, you will never be able to use other element. So, if your rival is using a water element, you're screwed? Well that's where the Chroma system gives it a tweak that other _"elemental based power systems"_ don't have. *_Chroma Styles._* There are usually 3 for attack and one for defense. Active: _Uses the own energy of the individual._ Passive: _Uses the energy surrounding the user._ Reactive: Uses the energy of both in an unbalanced mix. (The world has its own energy? Yes. Actually, that buffs the people from the tribe which more energy of their type irradiates in the battlefield. Also the world tends to counteract massive attacks to hurt less as they would and just focus in targets.) So, usually water is a _Passive_ energy. And it's strong against _Active_ energies, but if Fire is changed to _Reactive_ it actually overcomes Water energy. Then there's Neutral which is a perfect mix of own and surrounding energy, and works to block or negate incoming attacks. But you can't just spam it. It's like a parry let's say. And then there's Ethereal. Which is more like the manipulation of the energy in a pure state. But more like all the previous ones mixed. Chroma Vitae is the most common kind, since even Commoners have a bit of. But they can't control it no matter what they try. It's genetically related. They just have it as their "soul" or their "being" which is an energy manifestation of the person.
Yo great video keep up the good work! I think my favourite power system from an Anime/Manga is either Grimoires from Black Clover or Bleach's system. Both are creative but defined with enough rules to keep them grounded. I think Jojos Bizarre Adventure is one of the best soft magic systems though. Because each stand is so vastly different it's entirely about application and that leads to some very interesting fights. Whilst not perfectly scaled and balanced I think in terms of sheer creativity it's easily one of the GOATs
My power system pretty much works like chakra from Naruto. The user can even create one element from it the mc learned to use the energy in a way to have super speed and other powers.
My power system is a lot more rare and unique in it's own way as to how it's used. A have a lot of energy flowed in my manga. But the base of it all is ''Spark.'' It's the lowest level to the stone set energy system in my manga which is called Voltage, there are different levels to the power system in my manga. First off it's Spark, Hika and lastly Transcendent. I do martial arts irl so I implemented a nature called Phases. For characters to be strong than others, they must have more experience and have more finished Phases than others, think of Phases like a barrier that needs to be pushed passed. When this barrier is pushed pass, it gives that character more of a variety to there skill set and makes them stronger.
One of the best power systems I've heard of and got inspiration off of is 100% Apple Black in my opinion. The way Whyt conjoins sorcery in his story is truly mind blowing. How he started it off with the fruit ''Black'' that flowed through every object on Eden makes so much sense. And the ''Impulse'' was passed on by generations till the present day of the manga. What makes it interesting it that the energy slowly starts to diminish in the bloodline as generations go by. Props to Whyt for creating a unique power system.
Any good soft magic system has a strong hard magic system hidden inside. The rules are there, just not openly explained. Any good hard magic system has a strong soft magic system waiting in its fringes. The flexibility is there, just not yet fully capitalized. Any good magic system is deeply connected to the world. They influence and change one another, and knowing more of one opens new deepness on the other. They become mutual resources for the economy of the world, and the economy of the magic. Any good magic system is deeply connected to the characters. Its power gives agency, its limit gives challenge, its drawbacks give failure, its mere existence creates conflict and motivation. The magic system must be the basic tool to reach the goals, directly set the stakes, or both.
Technopathy is obtained via nanites called Ultinites. It's original purpose was to enhance and improve human physiology like strength, durability, senses, etc. In one of my stories which is sort of a prequel at this point, Ultinites are upgraded which makes Ultinites able to be passed down. The Ultinites also end up spreading to almost all humans on Earth and even my world's colonies How's it learned? A Technopath first needs to understand regular engineering to truly get a grasp on Technopathy. However it's not really like knowledge but rather the "feeling" (idk, I'm an amateur). Protocols (a.k.a the "elements" of Technopathy) Volts (Electricity) Hertz (Sound) Ohms (Heat as in the feeling you get from fire) Resolution (Pixels) Newtons (Gravity) Grams (Particles) And a special element in my world (i don't have a name for it yet) which is kinda like a mix of RWBY's dust and Energon from Transformers. It's kinda like bright neon energy **Advanced abilities** (this isn't all of them) - Self-Cleaning. Device will clean itself over time. - Sense (electricity, microwaves, radiation, radio waves, technological devices) - Shielding vs. technopath influence or hacking. - Short Circuit. (Electricity) - Spoof electronic sensors - causes sensor to sense or display incorrect information - Tap communications land line - Visualize blueprints - The ability to see in your mind all the various parts that make up a device, without taking it apart. Any missing parts will be missing from the vision. - Entering local networks via telepathic link. - Regenerate pieces of a technological device over time. May require materials or substances that the device is made of. - Enhance the abilities of a technological device. Ex: added sensors, better accuracy, better heat dissipation, better traction, efficient power consumption, EMP shielding, greater power, greater range, higher speed, waterproofing, etc. - Overload power source. (Electricity) - Powering technological devices. (Electricity) - Jury rig - Technological device just works despite missing or damaged parts, lack of ammo, lack of fuel, or lack of power source. Weaknesses - Disabling Ultinites (EMP / strong electrical shocks / strong magnetic fields) - knocks out nanites. A person used to working with nanites for a long time wont be used to functioning without them. - Hacking - Another technopath might be able to hack your Ultinites. Total loss of ability to use technopath powers / Hacker controls you like a puppet / Nanites attack your internal organs - Overuse - Ultinites have to draw power from somewhere. Using them too much in a short period of time can drain the host body of energy and materials. Symptoms: Weakness, Fatigue, Malnutrition I tried to make this simple but make it clear enough for myself
Since my story is set in a more modern day I’ve gone for a Nen Type approach with an aura that is base strength based on colour and the main character creating his own colour from these auras they can unlock powers or elements reflecting their personality with the main characters being solar pyrokenisis? 🤷♂️ is this a good idea I’ve stuck with it for a while. The powers can only be used until the users aura supply runs out and the strongest attacks for the manga or hopefully show is Galaxy lvl for stronger characters with emphasis on the characters growth from a weak character but good fighter to incredibly strong

Me and a friend of mine gonna create a "anime" its by my analysis it has VERY soft magic system,then i the magic system dont has a name,since everyone has a different power, except the 2 main protagonists, that are brothers, do you think this is a good idea?
What about attack on titan and chainsaw man. I don't even think there is a power system in them. Its hard for me to explain why i don't think they have power systems, something to do with the "powers" being exterior. For attack on titan - only several characters can turn into titans. Its very different when compared to, lets say, nen where anyone can learn it and continue to develop it. For chainsaw man - the "powers" all come from a kind of entity, devils. Everything is an extension of devils. So are devils the power system? but they are also the enemies. Its like saying alien movies have power systems. Aliens being like devils, a foreign entity.
You make solid points! I think it's subjective. Personally I would say the titan shifter power IS the power system, even though its incredibly limited to only a few characters. Same thing with Chainsaw Man, the power system just isn't accessible to everyone. That's just my thoughts on it though, I'm sure others could make a good counterarguement lol
If any of you are planning on creating a power system for a manga or a book or anything like that. I highly suggest that you read Sandersons books especially mistborn. Allomancy(the magic system in mistborn) is a really unique and interesting magic system and its very fun to read as well
@@Roach_draws_stuff alright so I'm just gonne give you a gist of the book. In every fantasy book, their is the protagonist and their is an antagonist, they fight and usually the protagonist wins.... That's not the case here. This takes place after the fight.... After the protagonist lost. It's a dystopian world ruled by one supreme ruler controlling all of the continent the skaa(lower class) have been tortured and forced to work and rot by the aristocrats and between them lie allomancers. Certain descendants of the aristocrats who have the ability the harness powers from some metals. Each metal giving them a different metal and some allomancers are special. They can harness the power of all metals and they are called mistborns. A small theiving crew in the middle of the skaa plans to steal a huge supply of the rarest metal controlled by the Lord ruler and we follow their story. It's a relatively long book of 642 pages so read first one and continue to the next 2 of you want(the first doesn't end on a cliff hanger so you don't have to worry about that)
Not exactly a Power system but I think people should check out the SCP lore. If you see it from a creative perspective you would find that a lot of SCPs have some of the most unique powers one can imagine. Like there is one SCP that nobody knows how it looks or what it is because it erases the memory of its existence from anybody that has seen it and any related evidence (audio, photo, drawings etc.)
Im writing a Shaman King inspired battle shonen about Onmyoji or Battle Exorcists summoning Shikigami of varying types and abilities. It will work alomg similar lines to Digimon Tamers digimodify system, using artifacts or talismans of different kinds to boost a Shikigami to overcome certain innate disadvantages. Like giving wings to ones shiki to allow for temporary flight. Im even adding a layer of the Onmyoji able to use the tools, weapons or equipment of their Shikigami summons to aid them in battle and not just be there barking orders from the sidelines

I want everyone to say if this is an interesting power system or not but it is actually the amalgamation of four entire power systems I'll tell you all of them. The first power system is known as a legend well not entirely really legend is something that builds up the soul and basically makes it so that wouldn't kill something you legend is increased thereby making your soul increase and power also increasing your power physically since you're mental mind and physical mind is connected then we have Nexus Nexus is something that is formed inside of a person's body in the form of 12 the orbs no not celestial marks these marks which aren't always orbs One broken release a massive amount of Nexus which makes you better at something I'm not with that Nexus one you're being born and can give you special abilities depending on where you are for example if you're near bees the concept of bees would be higher therefore you would get an ability that would most likely allow you to control bees. After that we have balance balance is something that a person can utilize when breaking all of their celestial marks becoming something known as a keeper a keeper is a conceptual being made from the power system you utilized Nexus is always there it's just each time you get significantly stronger one of those celestial Marks is broken. Anyways anytime a person becomes a keeper they have an ability this is to create balance basically bakery they're very first abilities by collecting conceptual fragments that are around where they go after that they form it all turn it into a system something that would limit someone's power making sure that universe or multiverse doesn't get too strong after that they form a power system with those same conceptual fragments and then use the remainder ones to create a universe or multiverse depending on how much you have and after they're finished they reap all of the conceptual fragments from the University create basically each universe they create a stronger they get. Thing is only 30% of keepers are good The rest will want to cross into the fourth dimensional realm being only four and a half dimensional realm beings. These keepers however are slayed by a keeper slayers keeper slayers are basically beings that are blessed by keepers one doing so they gain the ability to absorb and manipulate conceptual fragments and they go through the same process as keepers instead they utilize that universe as their body basically giving them all a shape-shifting ability along with that they can technically create an infinite amount of bodies just becoming mental beings but they won't lose all of their power when their original body dies that body would just be devoured by the original universe and if anything they would get stronger each time they die. Go back to the original topic after forming enough conceptual fragments they find we created a system or power system for their universe but instead of balancing it out they let it grow as much as they want just creating a very strong power system and also create things known as conceptual weapons weapons made from a person soul fragments and conceptual fragments to give it extra abilities itself. After doing all of this a person would become a keeper slayer the stronger they become the stronger their universe becomes and the bigger growsit could become a multiverse or more possibly even an entire matrix. Along with that they're five ranks of keeper slayers. First rank: keeper hunter Second rank: keeper Slayer Third rank: keeper destroyer Fourth rank: keeper univer slayer Fifth rank: true universal Slayer. Along with that finally the fourth power system is the amalgamation of balance Nexus legend and conceptual fragments which is known as Celestia. Celestial can be used to raise mental strength physical strength increase the power of abilities and much more and of course is mainly used to power the conceptual abilities that keepers and keepers slayers use. The main reason the main characters special is because he was blessed by Celestia itself as a concept having the conceptual weapon Celestia a black sword also used by the strongest keeper and a very high affinity with conceptual fragments Nexus and just any power system he comes across. My favorite power systems are Jojo's and Csms, since there are very little rules to them, and kinda left vague, so it allows the authors to make about anything happen in their. For Jojo's you never know what stand you can run into, it could range to something specific to world ending potential, for chainsaw man it really adds to the chaotic nature of the story, as you never know what devil you can run into, and about anything can happen, really gives a sense of unpredictability to the stories
Hey man, a friend of mine is creating an original story and is trying to devise a power system but is unsure of how to proceed. Here is what he has so far. Characters even in the beginning of the series are significantly above the average human in terms of strength, showcasing superhuman levels of strength and durability that would kill the average human, due to their Arks granting them superhuman characteristics with elemental manipulation. It's nothing too original since elemental powers are basically the standard norm for most shonen works but he wants advice on how to make it unique. He is considering taking the Bleach route where the owner's weapons basically have their souls attached to their weapons but he feels that would be far too complicated. For each weapon, there's also a "release" command that was majorly inspired by Bleach where a user's power is multiplied by a factor of ten at the cost of increased stamina consumption leading to fatigue. He has played a lot of mobile games and is a fan of Arknights power system of Originium Arts but doesn't want to copy it entirely. He is basically considering scrapping and starting all over since the power system he wants basically contrasts heavily with the story arcs he has in mind and is too complicated and riddled with what he knows are plotholes and as you stated, simply "adding" onto the magic system rather than expanding upon it. He basically is trying to come up with more drawbacks, limitations, and what is established. For example, his main OC protagonist, who uses water and ice, can effectively feed his team with water thus eliminating the need for most water bottles to hydrate and keep on going, yet on the downside, it consumes his stamina, yet he also wants more drawbacks and trying to find ways to innovate the system rather than come up with new powers The worldbuilding he has so far is inspired by both Attack on Titans and Cyberpunk 2077 along with RWBY so he has that down. It's basically a dark dystopia-based work.
That’s why I like the powers or “quirks” in Mha, Horikoshi made it where if you used your quirk too much you’d inevitably slow down or even destroy your quirk factor
I’m currently planning out a webtoon/comic where the power system is that characters can turn their bodies into elements depending on their emotions. The combat revolves heavily around being able to control your emotions in order to get an elemental advantage. The problem I’m facing is that I feel that’s gonna get old quick, so I’m thinking about adding a kind of secondary power which is characters are able to conjure an object which represents their personality. Think stands from jojos but the objects are more physical rather than metaphorical. An example is that the main character is a problem solver who thinks their way around situations, they would be able to conjure gears to gain a mechanical advantage. Should I follow through with this idea or switch it up? Let me know 😊
My favorite magic system out of most anime and manga is probably the power system for bleach. It has a define set of rules, while also leaving room for new powers. My only question is how to tell the difference between the two types. You're video did explain it pretty well, but it was alot to take in lol

I suppose looking at it that way... the magic system I'm working on is a soft magic system with hard magic rules. basically, magic exists and everyone can use it for whatever they want (baring any societal rules,) however, in order to do that, they have to understand how to make what they want happen, in other words have a strong grasp for science and the like, as well as how to manipulate the powers behind magic. They cant break the laws of physics, they have to work around them, fire can not be lit under water, vacuum insist on filling and so on. Its been pretty fun to play with, though the concept of portals and pocket dimensions still throw me for a loop lol
That sounds like Index's Science power system. Espers in Indexverse can only manipulate,not overwrite,physics. So they basically cannot create something out of nothing.
I make this stupid internet RPs/RPGs because I'm too bad to make real game, so I have a few RPs/RPGs and they have pretty strange magic. They are pretty similar but have differences. First one has it so you can get up to one magic naturally over your life and may get none, but you can find artifacts that will gove you magic and doing special things gives you magic, so now we know how to get magic but what about how it works? My magic works as "you get ability and do anything you can think of with it" but of course for balance it can barely do anything, so how do you get stronger? You can get stronger by using artifacts with unlocks new powers(for example weapon magic at start is just normal sword but after absorbing artifact it can create any weapon form meaning better knowledge on how weapons work and how to make them equals better magic) for magic, but the best way to get stronger magic is magic evolving/combining depending on how you use magic it may evolve so we had some electricity magic and it can evolve into 3 path(isk how to name them in English) for example acceleration magic but it could also be combined with destruction magic(it was pretty unique in my rp compared to normal destruction magic) to get explosive electricity(you can explode your electricity but it gets like 2-3 times weaker) or piercing electricity(your electricity can take energy of your fist to not just shock or burn enemy but to be used as rapier and and pierce enemy) you may ask why can they combine diffrently? My answer is that depending on how you try to combine them you get different result. And you could do it with almost any magic and combinations can include not just 2 but like 4 magics. Sadly after combinig/evolving magic old one gets deleted but you can get it back with artifacts. Also for special magic you could get something like faith magic, explosion magic, levitation magic, rage magic etc. Oh and i had 25 starting magics with one being chosen randomly, newbies could choose from 2 magics for first character and one respin everyday. I think that's all If this will somehow get likes I may talk about second RP but it is pretty similar
I'd imagine a series based around fortune telling techniques would be mostly soft magic based But it could be a harder system as characters learn to manipulate probabilities and specifics better.

Hey monitor, I'm writing a samurai story and i got the inspiration for my power system from demon slayer. I know that the effects in demon slayer aren't real but in my story, the effects are real and are granted unto the characters through their swords that are given unto them by gods. I write them to actually have a purpose in the fights between the characters in my story and the limitation I put on the effects are stamina drain , is there a way I could write it without it looking like an off brand version of demon slayer?
I'm no writer but if I could make a suggestion, in Demon Slayer we clearly see that they have to behead the demons to kill them. Maybe in your story you can show your characters using the elements to achieve desires effects or victory, rather than the use of their swords.

Hard magic is always the best magic system, western depiction of magic in novels is usually soft as the hook is some sort of lesson in morality. Rather than creating a believable universe in which mortals, immortals, gods, devils, dragons and all manner of magical entities exist. Cultivation novels follow a characters journey towards immortality, something that deeply angers the villainous heavens, to which it sends tribulations to annihilate any being attempting to break through it's limitations. Hard and soft is the divide between logical and emotional people.
Soft is the best. The softer the better. The most important thing of a fight is the choreography. Give me good choreo, and laser blasting attacks every now and then during the battle.
@@CoolAsianGuy Take Naruto for example, the magic or chakra system is a hard magic system as it is built upon the mythology and ancient views on how the human body operates or used to operate when the world was still special. The how, of how chakra channeling through maridians and hand signs work is the part you suspend disbelief on. But there are rules on who can do what, and for how long. Their magic is like a weapon, all things are known about it, using it in battle is like two swordsman circling, feint and thrusting. It's just that they are standing on the side of a cliff, as their battle destroys the surrounding area while they fight to decide the hokage of their village or fight for revenge etc. I'm in good shape, If I wanted regular sword fighting I could do it myself lol.
i’m thinking of an animated series with a power system i think is pretty unique.(correct me if i’m wrong on that) Just to open the main ability they use to fight are vines they can summon from the surrounding ground and there are traits that they can apply to these vines as little power ups. Basically there are 5 basic types of abilities. Blue which makes vines periodically watery and if the vines break you can control the watery vines from a distance, red makes thorns on the vines, yellow makes the vines faster, violet can be used to make tiny explosives, and finally white which hardens sections of the bombs. Most of the complexity of the fighting system comes from the different ways traits mix and overlap. Though you can only use 2 traits at once. Though… their is a 6th trait. Its generally a taboo but black is all the traits wrapped in one. And can use all the traits at once. But at the cost of your soul. Slowly draining you of humanity and your emotions.
That's a very great power system and one of a kind. I think it'll be great, you should clearly work on it. As for my opinion: It doesn't feel much interesting (I know it's subjective but hear me out). See the point is this feels like a ability to control or manipulate plants type power, which feels like an extension of elemental power system. Moreover only vines make it a bit limited, which is additional limitation you are putting over already using a plant based PS. If you are really working on a plant based system, why not dmake it more diverse and find some awesome traits about certain plants and use them. Like a specific medicinal plant (for healers), a parasitic plant (cuscuta), a plant that can release spores (Gymnosperms) with ability to manipulate those who inhale it. Overall I think a bit of changes can yield you great results and very a good power system.

Hey I need help with my Power System. I'm finding it hard to choose or create a name for it and how to mix all the powers I include and how to make them work and make sense. My power system is Elemental energy that comes from the users (warrior clans) soul/spirit. They were given this power by the fictional worlds Gods/goddesses through the Astral plane dimension. This is as well as being able to use simple energy techniques and abilities whilst having elemental powers. Each clan worship a certain god/goddess such as the Lightning clan who worship a god called "Raijin" and those thousands of clan members all have the power to use lightning energy elements. Same goes for fire, water, earth etc. One clan that isn't human are the Elves whose power is magic and because they're immortal they do not need such elemental manipulations because of having magic that has been around longer than the powers given to the human warrior clans.Those who are powerless can still train to get stronger but they won't have elemental manipulation powers etc but they can develop life energy abilities like the ones you see in dragon ball. The clan members can do this too whilst having elemental powers. The powerless mostly carry weapons ifnused with ancient souls who give the weapon powers and the user holding it. (So basically Elemental energy is Mana and Life force is another source of energy. 2 sides of the same coin put together) The main enemies are Demons and devils from the underworld who do not have a soul, so i'm still creating a power system for them that use dark energy, sourcing it from a dark dimension just how the Warriors get their powers, from the Astral plane dimension fuelled by the gods in the heavens. Any ideas onhow to keep this controlled, a name and how to make it all make sense lol. I'm having a nightmare realsiing i've complicated myself and if it all can make sense.
Maybe create a simpler draft of the power system, with simpler rules and less types and then slowly keep refining the rules and adding new things while making them consistent in iterations until you are satisfied. As for the names, write core words that are related to the thing you are trying to name and then either translate the words to japanese or latin or something else or just twist the letters to derive a new word (e.g. fire demon -> faeron -> phaerom)
That sounds cool though! Maybe make it more soft power so there's less room for error. With science stuff you sometimes have to worry about people interested in that stuff fact checking lol

I've never been fond of soft magic systems exept for a few exceptions like Lord of the Rings. Because it's a fairy tale type story, I don't mind having random magic coming to save the day in a convenient, albiet reserved manner.
soft magic versus hard magic doesn't actually correlate to how strict the rules are in the actual fictional world, it's just related to how well the reader understands it
The origin of the magic system i made was that god (Metatron in my story) sent Archangel Michael to defeat Lucifer, which he failed, but before he died, he left his knowledge to the primitive humans of the earth, so they can learn the powers of the angels and one day defeat Satan... Yea I’m trying to create a more grittier story but still has some upbeat moments . I’m not to far into the storyline but my mc is vengeful and selfish who wants to kill evil spirits that destroyed his home and family. Problem is that he can’t use spiritual energy so he’s not powerful enough to get his revenge yet. So my magic system for him is what Im calling it for now until I find new and cooler name for them is “book power” 😅. Book powers can lead to the users soul being consumed, lead to insanity, and ultimate bloodlust. It can also destroy and harm the users body if used incorrectly. These book powers however have a will of their own and need to be tamed by the users will. The book power will take your soul depending on how much you use it or how big the attack is. But these book powers can be extremely op if used right. If the user turns insane when using this power they’re not in control of how much they’re using their book power which can lead to the user destroying their bodies or soul which will lead to their death. If their soul is consumed they’ll cease to exist. It can also lead to your opponent gaining an advantage over the user if smart enough. But with this insanity comes a major power boost. Each books ability can vary drastically but it depends on how resourceful and how much will the user has to be powerful. The person get these books in temples or anywhere. The user has to find a map if they get the map they can find the book. The book will only show one page at first with the written price the user has to pay once the price is paid they gain the power. Now atp the book will have over multitudes of techniques, skills, and powers the user can use. These techniques and skills come from the past users of this book. You can create some of your own techniques and skills and it will be added to the book. You can get more than one book power but it can lead to the person going insane and soul being consumed faster but will also make you stronger. In addition to this the only way to obtain it is to get a map of where the book is located. However these maps can be extremely expensive and some can lead to being fakes. The book will grant you its power but you have to make a sacrifice which depending on how powerful the book is sacrifice can dangerous, easy, or just difficult. Like FMA Nothing comes without a cost essentially when using this . More powerful the book the more severe the users price will be. But any book powers can be extremely powerful if you train it, and use it wisely and carefully and have great will power. But it will take a extremely long time for the user to be considered crazy powerful with a weak book power. Anyone reading this feel free to critique or add anything to it. Good vid aswell.

My main character still goes through a revenge arc but rather than just making it another revenge arc I decided to give him a goal that’s more than just getting revenge. The character arc of my main character now is that he suffers from depression and his goal is live filled with joy life rather than just wasting it away being trapped in misery. He later stumbles across the book I was talking about earlier. the book grants him powers but along with that it offers him a chance to wish for anything and the book will grant it for him. With this opportunity he wishes to feel absolute joy. The book grants him his wish. However all the books are twisted and evil and the point of the books is for the user to get dependent or addicted the powers. So rather than book fulfilling my mcs wish in the way he’d imagine the book instead gives him the feeling of absolute and ultimate joy every time he uses the book for a long period. But this is risky since once my mc receive this his mind gets warped and goes into a crazed state which effects his mind and body after usage. But mc uses this power constantly so he can feel the joy the book gives him which will ultimately cost him. My personal power system : Inspiration - most of the abilities and the power system itself is actually based off of the commonly used magic system which involves someone mostly utilizing mona to conjure up spells and multiple abilities. - Rou : Rou is a special form of force created by three concepts : Life, aura, physical. Rou if anything is the manifestation of all of these elements and has four stages. 1 : colorless stage | one a person's Rou is completely colorless and is almost none existent. 2 : unique stage | one a person's aura/Rou begins to obtain their own coloring depending on a person's soul. 3 : world essence/True Rou | when a person's aura is so strong it can be utilized to replicate the essence which makes up worlds. 4 : conceptual essence | a person's Rou games the complicity where it can be compared to a concept. - Ero : Ero is the manifestation of the three concepts : Spiritual, mental, elemental. Through this a person can utilize Ero to replicate the natural forces of nature which are known as attributes or affinities. For example : having an Earth affinity means that Ero Will gain the ability to turn into earth-based things. In the stages of Ero are : 1 : Non - Ero | a stage one a person's Ero can't even be manifested into their affinity. 2 : Ero | when a person's Ero reaches the stage to even be called it and can replicate a person's affinity. 3 : world essence | when a person's Ero can completely replicate an affinity to the point where it becomes the real thing and can even be used to act as a replacement for the essence of worlds. 4 : conceptual essence | when a person's Ero evolves into a concept. - Menrix : Menrix is a spiritual energy which lays inside of a person's mind otherwise known as a stage verse - we will be talking about it later -. Menrix is basically a mental force utilized by all who focus on the path of spirituality like the shinigami. - Tenrix : A completely physical energy which in most cases is actually used to increase one's longevity and physical prowess. In this case Tenrix it's basically the physical version of Menrix. - Primus : Primus is a primordial force which is also known to be able to store information. Through this it is normally used by people who go on the path of a scout or assassin to gain information and people who utilize this force of nature are highly valued by the government of that specific region. - Classes : Classes are divided into four stages and three special factors. beginner class : includes the simplest things like swordsmen or guard. Evolved class : a class which represents their original class but instead goes into a sort of new region of abilities to match its user. Unique class : a class which fully represents its user to their fullest. Legend class : a class seemed to only be held by the heavenly and the strongest of the strong - exaggeration - and can even bring new affinities into the infinite multiverse. And the three special cases of classes which can be obtained at any time but cannot be changed are : Monarch class : a class which can only be held by an apostle of a race or the representative of that specific race. Concept class : a class that can be obtained after obtaining a legend class and fully fuses its user with their affinity allowing them to become a full-on conceptual apostle. Apostle class : a class which can be obtained after becoming an apostle to some sort of divine being. - Items/equipment/weapons - relics : Relics are sorts of items or weapons or maybe even just day-to-day equipment which are created by the natural forces of everything. they have multiple naturally created forms on their bodies which give them special functions if powered by the right energy. - Monarchs : Monarchs are basically the representative of some race and the stronger that race gets the stronger the monarch becomes and vice versa. - Spells : Spells are basically engravings on one's energies which allow them to utilize specific functions like creating fire or maybe summoning some sort of water shark. - Territories : Territories have three stages : Lord Territory : a territory which starts to manifest a base field around someone but cannot be fully utilized. Emperor territory : a territory which fully manifests a person's base field - area around them which acts like a passive defense - and won the territory can actually be manifested. Monarch territory : a territory which were presents everything they have held have and what they are. A territory also obtains for primary effects which act like abilities which can only be used inside someone's territory. - I have quite a bit more, Believe me but I wouldn't want to say it all so would you please give me some suggestions on how to make this power system better? - ( PT 2 | Thanks for the heart ) Stage verse : A stage versus basically ones mentality formed and shaped into a territory except for the fact that instead of it being on the outside it's in the inside. A person's stage versus represents everything about them from their mentality to their talents and you need to have access to it to obtain your own territory. However mostly users with mine related classes can basically break down a person's territory by attacking someones stage verse. - Soul treasures : Soul treasures are basically relics which are related to someone's stage versus and bloodline. And there are two specific ways to obtain a soul treasure : 1 : bloodline. - the most common way of obtaining a solo treasure is that someone else from your bloodline had a pained a sacred+ grade relic and through special resources had fused with the waterline which would allow their descendant to utilize it as a soul treasure. 2 : divinity. - One a person gains the interest of some sort of deity God or maybe find some sort of temple which holds their legacy a person can become an apostle of that form of divinity and obtain a soul treasure related to the concept that , God had ruled over. - Relics ( grades ) : There are multiple grades related to relics which range from... sometimes when making a soft magic system, or one that can be used in many diffrent ways, you can make magic systems spreading from this soft one. For example in my story i have a soft magic system of souls, or anima, kinda like chakra. But also you can do a trick by kind of exploding your anima quickly then tucking it back into your body, or moving it around to change body shape. Which could also be another magic system as that has another set of rules. And also you could make your magic system diffrent for everyone. In my story anima and its abilities change by the species. With humans having weak anima, but other species having diffrent rules that apply to them due to their biology.

The best digital art software in my opinion is Clip Studio Paint. Photoshop is a good second pick. For free alternatives I'd put Krita first, then Ibispaint, Medibang, Procreate, etc. Hope that helps!
This is my magic system, it’s called "stone craft" (Tolad language: L'ndith /ləndiθ/): -Stone craft can have many potential uses, both necessary (transportation, medicine) and trivial (cosmetics, entertainment), but it is seldom used (usually only by elites and scholars) because it can be dangerous. Stone craft manifests itself through precious crystals, called "wizard stones" (or 'khridhvel’nt' /χriðvɛlənt/ in the Tolad /tɔlad/ language). Users summon Stone craft by properly reciting Tolad incantations while making physical contact with wizard stones. If used properly, Stone craft can help its users solve problems and give the user powers such as teleportation, healing, disguise, etc. -Stone craft is mostly used by elites and scholars, as they have the resources to obtain wizard stones and learn incantations in Tolad. Although extremely rare, a handful of individuals (regardless of class) are predisposed by birth to contain quantities of wizard stones in their blood streams, which enables such individuals, called the "stone-blooded" (or 'l’ndrogh' /ləndrɔʁ), to use (or be used for) Tolad incantations without crystals. -Natural wizard stones is a limited resource which is strictly guarded by henchmen who work for the elites. However, some scholars can secretly synthesize artificial wizard stones by using fragments of natural crystals to convert other matter into it. Elites consider this conversion theft, and make attempts to persecute scholars and the stone-blooded for their usage. Stone craft can become addictive if used multiple times during a short period. For incantations, unrounded vowels require two wizard stones (for height and backness) while rounded vowels require a third for roundedness; length and stress also warrant more. Voiceless consonants require two (for place and manner of articulation) with voice and ejectivity also warranting more. Users can be defeated by simply running out of it or using it incorrectly. -After being used for an incantation, wizard stones quickly sublimate into an odorless, toxic gas which can cause temporary paralysis/vision impairment if inhaled (although this usually isn’t fatal and lasts on average temporarily for ten-15 minutes). Large scale sublimation can cause pollution and collateral damage to ecosystems. The stone-blooded are sought after and are particularly vulnerable to abduction/slavery for their natural abundance of wizard stones. Criminals are often punished with harmful incantations (in addition to the temporary paralysis/vision impairment). Wizard stones can be used to cure debilitating illnesses, but there is a price to pay; that illness must be transferred to another lifeform (usually to the aforementioned criminals). Anti-elitist possession of wizard stones is often severely punished by the elites, who fear class mobility from its usage by lower classes. -Wizard stones were created naturally by “paramount comets” (or 'k’al’nv’t' /kʼalənvət/), which impacted and their supernatural minerals became embedded within the ground. Eons later, the Tol tribes settled throughout the rugged landscape which was shaped by craters from paramount comets. As the Tol civilization developed, farmers, paid laborers, slaves, and other workers participated in architecture projects and engineering endeavors, including construction, agriculture and landscaping. One day, according to legend, four Tol slaves were ordered by their master to explore a cave in search of fresh drinking water. One of them brought a torch so they could see through the darkness and deep within the cave, they discovered beautiful rock formations covered in crystals. After one if the slaves yelled in amazement, the unstable ceiling caved in and they were buried in an avalanche of crystals. They were wounded and crystal particles became imbued in their blood streams as a result. Only one of the slaves was still conscious afterwards and made cries for help. To his amazement, the stones surrounding his body sublimated and then he passed out from blood loss and the toxic fumes. Hours later, the four slaves regained consciousness in the cave and miraculously escaped from the pile of crystals. Their language, the Tolad language, was the first language ever uttered within the crystal’s vicinity, which triggered a mutation that only allowed the crystals understand Tolad. There may be undiscovered crystals that haven’t been exposed to Tolad and thus available for another language. They were physiologically altered by the crystals, it fused with their dna and several of their descendants became the stone-blooded from the wizard stone's dominant gene. After emerging from the cave, the four men used their new abilities to free themselves from slavery and become a quadrumvirate which would unite the Tol tribes beneath a federation. Their cooperation and even distribution of land to rule within the federation enabled an era of peace and prosperity for the Tol federation, which balkanized after their deaths. During the power vacuum, Tol elites usurped control of separate territories and became fiercely protective of the wizard stones, often warring with each other over the crystals. Scholars were employed by the elites to study the wizard stones so that elites could utilize their power. -Even today, Stone craft is strictly guarded by the elites and their henchmen, although its existence is no secret. Most people among the lower classes could benefit from wizard stones but most wouldn’t dare try to obtain it from fear of severe punishments by the elites. Additionally, Tolad language resources are scarce beyond the elites’ mansions. Elites and scholars have established a wizard stones society to regulate what Tolad words and phrases can be used for incantations. These approved incantations are recorded in a text called “the canon” (or 't’avdru' /tʼavdru/), which is updated every year. Some rogue scholars illegally practice their own unapproved incantations. Although there is no particular set of clothing that distinguishes users, elites are (needless to say) the most well dressed of the classes and thus, fine linens and robes could possibly indicate usage. However, not all elites can be bothered to learn about wizard stones or how to use it. Additionally, scholars, who are the most familiar with wizard stones, are different from elites in that they generally prefer to stay away from attention. They often disguise themselves among the lower class, which also include some the stone-blooded. The lack of incentive to procure wizard stones or resources to learn the Tolad language has made many lower class citizens indifferent to Stone craft. tl;dr: rich guys use magic crystals to do stuff sometimes.
One of the interesting things I've seen done is for the author to have a very hard magic system but write it like a semi-soft system were things can happen and we and the characters just wont know why for a while, or there will be details about how the magic works that they are just flat out wrong about.
So this world is kinda weird every where you go you’ll see people ripping their limbs off but don’t worry their not crazy or hurt their just animals see at the age of 5 everyone well almost everyone gets an animal under their flesh my brother got a bird which is awesome he used to fly me to school but now we don’t even talk I honestly think he’s embarrassed of me. I feel like getting how the soft magic system makes the power system vague with giving trouble for the protagonist but the Protagonist uses it. i feel that this would be perfect because its a mix of both theory, problems to be solved and a wide range of abilities for the protagonist an dthe antagonist to use to create a satasfying and stable mix of the 2

Brainstorming helps a lot! Write a ton of "one sentence concepts" until you find one you like. For example, death note would be "smart guy finds a notebook that kills people when their name is written" Dr stone is "high schools try to rebuild civilization after everyone mysteriously turns to stone" Since they're one sentence, it's very low commitment and you can do a lot fast. Once you find a concept you like it'll be easier to try and build a story around it!

Awakened rioken: creates larger and more powerful shockwaves able to break through kirion so a counter to a counter. awakened kirion: reflects the stronger shock waves my project will. be created soon. edit rioken makes you lose energy making you a easier target same for kirion
Robert Jordan created and wrote the Wheel of Time series. Brandon Sanderson only co-authored the last 3 books in the extensive series. Sanderson did not create the magic system, Jordan did.
Not necessarily it depends on how your magic is used in your story. Magic like any magic (power) system has a spectrum between hard and soft systems. You just have to explain why X character can't just solve the problem with magic. Ways to limit your magic 1) it's learnable (you have to be taught, needs pratice,) 2) limit on how much magic each characters has (one character has average magic reserves so to compensate they use alot more lower level spells requiring them to use wit vs people who use higher level spells) 3) types ( people can only learn one subclass of magic; kinda like bending in avatar the last air bender) Overall there's a variety of different media you can use to help develop your magic system. The more you read the easier it becomes to make a great magic system.
@@sterryd121 In a decent amount of cases there's characters that can revive so deaths don't feel as jarring as they should be. But the story im thinking about makes it really hard for revival magic to not be a thing in the early arcs of the story. I can probably ask around.
@@MrKing-he3eo if I can make a suggestion about revive. Why not make it so if you die and get revived there some form of consequence like PTSD or some form of worldview shift for the character in question? Could add some form of character development as a bonus.
