I would like to add that you actually can avoid formatting your table of contents each time you update it. Just create a personalized table of contents instead of choosing the classic one. Once you do and the pop-up window appears, click on the modify button in the right bottom corner. There, you will be able to format each heading level for the table of contents. Sorry for my poor english. I hope this was useful!
Yes, agreed! Just as there are heading styles you can format, there are TOC style that you can format. If you're editing a long paper, it's totally worth it to edit the TOC1, TOC2, etc. styles the first time you build the TOC. (The video is incorrect in stating this functionality doesn't exist.)

one problem. when you reformatted the entire table of contents at the end of the video the pages numbers changed again since your toc moved the content down so you would have to update thepage numbers again.
My professor (She has her doctorate) states that the abstract comes before the table of contents. But I am so grateful for you fantastic demonstration.
I'm currently doing my dissertation, I was advised the same thing. Abstract before table of contents. However, APA rules change frequently it seems. Maybe when she made this video, this was not the rule.
Another way to create the table of contents is to create a custom table of contents and then modify the formatting. This way you can update the entire table of contents without having to change the entire formatting again.

1) why does word automatically add a page number to my table of contents? 2) APA related questions: are we supposed to add numbers on our headings like 1/1.1/2/2.2/etc... & do we have to add the abstract and acknowledgments in our table of contents?
You don't need to change each individual heading's font, just change Normal's font. Also… don't manually reformat the TOC, just reformat its styles, like you did at the beginning. They have easy to understand names, like, you know "TOC 1" for the first level, "TOC 2" for the second one etc. Just open up the Styles menu, locate "TOC 1", right click and Modify…
My TOC will now be two pages as I decided to add the subchapter headings in it to bring clarity for the reader of my book's read. How should I do this? Should they both me on odd/right pages?
Excellent Tutorial! Thank you very much. Here is the issue I am running into. I have numbered my Headings (e.g., "1. Introduction" - the blank space between "1." and "Introduction" is an automatic spacing placed by Word. This gets placed when I type the "1" and then the period "." and hit Space. It places a space of some predetermined length. AND, I want/need it to be like this. When I am trying to select "1. Introduction" as Heading 1, the number "1." is disappearing. I need it to stay. I will also have numbering like "2.1", "2.1.1" and I need these numbers to stay. What would be your suggestion? I would deeply appreciate your feedback. Thank you.
This didn't work for me. I get a second line with a V under every single entry. 65-page paper and the table of contents is what is going to break me. I had to manually delete every v from a 5 page table of contents. Microsoft should be capable of better formatting.

Hi Can you cover the requirements for a dissertation; some of the pages come before the table of contents (Acknowledgements/ Abstract etc) and are with roman numerals above the ToC and then revert to normal text sized numbers after the table of contents

Okay, so I did everything that you are talking about. I have 58 page document with 25 primary headings and several more secondary headings, but only 5 headings show up in my TOC. What am I doing wrong?
Hi, Smart Student. Thank you for a great and thorough video. I have a lengthy dissertation paper (124 pages). My table is missing some tiles and pages, although I selected them as you have shown. I also have tables and figures to show in the table of contents, but although they have been selected, they still don't show. The headings 2 and 3 are not indented.

I'd rather do it the hard (easy for me) way. Highlight my whole paper at the end and select times new roman, size 12. Then just go through and individually bolden and align the headings as needed.
