GORGEOUS, i can’t wait til I get mack from acation in May so I can join your Patreon and start learning more! I’ve done some watercolors and also pastels painting wolves and such. I love the way you keep adding harmoneous colors in between here and there. I love the way that looks. Thank you so mucch for posting these amazing tutoriaals. You are helping people from all over the word improve their love of creating wonderful works of art! You are generous and amazing!
Such a lovely painting! I believe that I am just beginning to understand how pastels work, I still have difficulties with the layering of colors. I have painted in watercolor for 40+ years and you simply cannot put a red/ purple under a green! You would only get mush or dank mud! I hope to one day figure out this new to me medium! I am quite thankful for your videos and I wish you to know that your viewers are truly appreciative of your continuing instruction, thank you Susan. Please take care and be safe, have a lovely day.
exactly, i was so confuse when she put the underpainting, i doubted it is necessary, but soon i realize that the color actually fills up the gap which should have shown white which makes no contribution to the artpiece, and for the grass part purple pink shade made up as part of the shadow... i would have just put different kind of green and black shades for the bottom part which would surely look disastrous
I am in complete awe and adoration of your ability and knowledge when it comes to seeing which colours to use in your underpainting. I would dearly love to be able to perceive the world the way you do. Thank you for sharing your incredible talents.
I finally figured out how to apply the alcohol wash and layering for pastels!! It took a bit to sync my in my brain, but your videos helped me figure it out!! TY!!
simple responce. Your voice is so lovely to listen to. Your skills are amazing. I like how much detail you get for being impressionistic. This was fun to watch. I'll be watching more and subscribing.
I really like your art work and technique. I have been following some of your advice.Still a beginner but I put all of my effort into creativity. I draw at least 6-12 hours a day. I wish I could learn faster.Keep up the good work. Thanks again.
Wonderful! don’t worry if it’s taking some time, the learning curve on the front end is usually a lot, but then things start to come together. You could do it!
Very easy to see but quite difficult to practice for beginners .. but one step ahead, I will get used to scribble soft pastels on special paper to paint with. Thank you Susan for your very interesting and beautiful step by step tutorial. Greetings to you and your family.
Wow! This is new to me and so instructive. I would stop at around 22 minutes in or so. Love the impressionistic look as much as the finished piece. Thanks for sharing.
Mrs Jenkins,I'm so blessed to attend your lesson, you always rock and make lesson even more interesting using innovative ideas. Thnx ❤️ Love from India 💕 Arun
I learned so much from watching you build this scene; back to front. Makes so much sense.... now for me to actually execute it. Beautiful painting!!! Thanks so much
I know this is a two year old video, but this is the first time I've seen it, in fact, I am now hooked on all your flower tutorials. So a belated Happy New Year (2024) and big, big greets! from across the pond! Tony (Picsie)
finally able to follow the concept of this... i ended up with similar paintings... thanks very much, we made many friends happy along the way... the background became mountains though, but still turned out great...
Just watched this again Susan...I have that same set of TL's Maggie P. Pastel...can't wait to do my own "field picture" using your wonderful instruction...God Bless, and hope your Easter was joyful...
Ahhhh…. Thanks for noticing. I find that quite a few left-handed people have learned to be a bit ambidextrous. There are so many things we have to adjust to in our right handed world. I often say that toll booths are the only thing that are left handed friendly. Ha ha ha. In America anyway.
Susan, thank you once again, for such a beautiful session. But more so for I get inspired to revive my hobby . Did another work with some leftover pastel. 🥰🥰🥰
That’s good music to hear while creating. I tend to listen to something like the group Cannons. But then my arm seems to want to dance to the tempo and that’s usually when I mess up my piece. It’s okay though because I always have my joy when drawing.
I have to say one thing. I didn’t understand anything about pastels until now. After seeing your work and…oh yeah…I got some really good soft pastels today and sanded sheets. I can honestly say that I get it 🙂.They are like butter.Amazing! I had the thought that it had to have a really rough texture, but I realized these seem to lay down more pigment when it is a little bit finer (400 grade). And I was expecting the board to be really light weight but to the contrary,it’s heavy board.Anyway, I had to share my thoughts because I feel like a child in a candy store.Lol🎨.Thanks again. I love your videos and I’m looking forward to taking your class,”Monet Cafe’.
I’ve just recently found your channel because I absolutely love Monet! I paint in oils and acrylics. As I was watching the lily pad video last week I was wondering why in the world is she doing her under painting in pinks and purples 😮 (we usually do tan or brown) SO I tried it! I did my under painting in bright blues and yellow to somewhat match the end result. It was amazing at the highlights my painting was getting from the under painting! I’m using acrylics with different sized mop brushes to have that blended look. It’s turning out so beautiful ❤ Thanks for sharing and inspiring me to try new things!
Kristie, I absolutely loved your message! It makes me so happy that the underpaintings techniques brought your painting to life! Keep trying new things and enjoying this beautiful, artistic journey!
Hi again Susan , think I will have to go join your patron page , think I can afford it for a few month maybe more if I can . I have always admire your style and I want learn . When I make my mind up to learn something I usually can of coarse with lots of practice and a great mentor, and instructor like you.catch you later 😁
You won't believe am always waiting for your tutorials everyday ma'am. Me and my daughter always watch them, we even tried to follow along but it didn't turn out well bcuz i have lmtd colors 😆, we enjoyed your alcohol under painting tecnique. You really inspire me to paint more. Bless you! 🤗😊
Thanks to you ma'am, it really helps cope up with our lock down situation here. The only support I can give is watching all of your videos everyday. And I never get tired of it cuz I am learning a lot from you. 😊🙏
Susan, this is so pretty, I've been painting in pastels for about 6 yrs now. I still struggle with underpaintings. Weather dry or wet. Even on sanded or un sanded papers. If I put to many layers of pastel down it just looks Thick and Heavy. I cant quite get the knack of it.
Looks so good, I love impressionism but have 0 art skills. I want to get started, would you recommend to start with pastel or paint ? I like both styles but want to start with the easier to learn ❤
Hi. When you do an under painting like this with Isopropyl Alcohol does the paper need to be of a certain thickness and quality? ….. excellent video as always 😊
Hi Ray, I only use alcohol on water friendly surfaces. And the thicker the paper the better, but even though I use alcohol on certain papers that are thinner (such as watercolor paper), I usually find that the warping flattens out eventually. I also sometime brush water on the back and it tends to reverse the buckling. :)
@@monetcafe Thanks Susan. I think I also need to learn about (and buy) some quality paper (sanded?) and better quality soft pastels as i get the impression both are important if you want the best results.
Thanks so much, I often use Pastelmat, but if my memory serves me correctly I think I used Fisher 400 sanded paper for this. I purchase it from www.proartpanels.com
I think this surface was either UArt 400 Sanded paper, or Fisher 400 sanded paper. They are both almost identical, but the Fisher paper doesn't warp. I get mine from www.proartpanels.com
Beautiful painting. Loved watching this painting. What brand of fixative did you use and did you let it dry before applying more pastel? Thanks for sharing your talent.
I like to choose underpainting colors that will be exciting if they peak through a bit. Pink is a cool red and I felt it would be a nice complement to the blue. ;) But sometimes I just tone a whole surface with a fun color that is not a primary color in the original reference. Often for landscapes (with lots of green and blue) I will choose a golden orange color.
that's a good question. I actually prefer a wash in watercolor because I believe it allows the luminosity of the surface to show through (since watercolor is a translucent medium). But sometimes I'll do a pastel wash to begin a painting, often because it's convenient and I may not want to break out my watercolors... ha ha. Some of these choices are just personal preference. :)
Isn't it something that dandelions are HORRIBLE in your yard, yet made exquisitely beautiful by Susan. I want to say that paying $5 for art lessons is unheard of in the "real world". You will pay anyone at least $35 for one lesson. She really gives us a lot of help and instructions.
You have covered the paper with so many different colours. How can the top shades be so luminous? When I tried this it just turned into a muddy mess. Oversaturated. You are an inspiration to us all. However do you do it?
Thank you Susan, but I do have to give credit to my surface. I’m not sure what surface you have tried but I found a world of difference when I started trying “Sanded papers”. One of my favorites is called “Fisher “400 grit paper.. I buy it from www.proartpanels.com The advantage of sandpapers is that it allows you to lay down a lot of layers and maintain the vibrancy of color. When you work on sanded surfaces or drawing paper, your colors turn to mud fairly quickly. Hope that helps!
How do know when to stop..watching this i would have stopped five or six times but then you take it further. Great video. Hint: don't start watching this if you have to be somewhere..you'll be late.
Elizabeth, I actually feel the same way when looking back at my videos. Sometimes I actually wish I had stopped sooner. Thanks so much for your sweet comment!
One of my favorite underpainting colors is a warm orange-ish gold. It's great for landscapes since they have a lot of green and blue and the golden color is a complement. But often I just get creative and fun and choose a vibrant aqua or hot pink even. I find that color effects mood and sometimes I'm just playing. However, it's usually good to pick a color that is not dominant in your reference image. Hope that helps. I just shared a lesson on underpaintings if you'd like to check it out. It's about 2 or 3 videos back in my channel (as of the date of this message).
FYI. These artist bracelets do not come with porous lava beads. The maker has to restring the Monet Cafe bracelet with the porous beads. I purchased 2 of them and did not get what i saw Susan talk about rubbing her essential oils on while painting. I do love Susan’s art & videos tho. Just think the bracelet maker should be aware it’s confusing and one of my bracelets broke after wearing two days.
Yes, I use watercolor paper all the time. I typically do an underpainting (with watercolor or pastel) Then I coat the watercolor paper with CLEAR Liquid Gesso. This gives the paper some grit for the pastels to hold on to, otherwise, you won't be able to get many layers. Be sure to use the CLEAR gesso... as it's the one that has little bits of grit (sand) in it. ;). Have fun!
