Yu Sheng (a.k.a Yee sang) is a Chinese New Year must-have in Malaysia and Singapore. It is a raw fish salad that is tossed as a symbol of good luck, abundance and prosperity. It is the most fun part of all CNY gatherings as everyone shouts out auspicious words as we toss the salad with long chopsticks. It is believed the higher you toss the more auspicious you will be!
This video shows you how to create an Ox shaped yu sheng. We used a yu sheng platter purchased from Meidi-Ya (which comes with shrimp roe) and added our own salmon sashimi, seasoned jellyfish, bangkuang and pomelo. Although yu sheng is very popular as a symbolic dish, the best part of it is that it is so delicious! It is definitely one of the things we look forward to every CNY. Hope you enjoy the video!
