you did not specifically explain as to where we can put the canonical label --- is it on the same page which we want to be labeled canonical or on the other pages and post that we presume not canonical so we can point them to the actual page that is canonical..it is quite confusing -- it did not solve the problem. thanks
Yoast is so great! I have a question.. you made the e-commerce example of the same product but different color, that's clear. But if I have a shop with different products spread in more pages, I'd better use just the canonical url of the first page ? Thanks for your time
Hi Gianluca! To clarify, are you saying you have a shop page that is part of a paginated series so the different pages of the shop shows up as /shop/page/2/, /shop/page/3/, etc.? Are you wondering if you should change the canonical URL of those pages?
Hello Gianluca! Thanks for the clarification. A common misconception is that the canonical on a paginated page should always point to page 1 in the series. This is not the case. We have a indoor plant ecommerce store , we have listed one same plant in multiple listings with different pots , like for example a jade plant 1. Jade plant Small $10 2. Jade plant Big $15 3. Jade plant in a concrete pot $17 4. Jade plant with gift packaging $11 Now for all the 4 products the description of the plant remains the same. so do we need to add the canonical tag ( the link of the product 1 ) to all the other products ? So only the first product might be visible or indexed on google ??? Is it possible to target all the products or is it better to target one out of these many ??
Hi Fawaaz! Having the same content on multiple URLs may cause duplicate issues. Our recommendation would be to either consolidate the multiple URLs into a variable product with a dropdown for the different pot sizes or pick one of the URLs and canonicalize the others to this URL. @@yoast thanks a ton. I just finished writing down this topic. I feel like a hook was pulled out from my chest. I've been trying to figure out why the certain word becomes link and colored text😅. I think my WPE site is an Apache, so may I know if I will use the WPE file or Yoast file or is it wpe and yoast is separate file when it comes to cloaking? I seem to have a long,long way to go before my site starts running. I still need to learn how to read and understand the coding. I am always offended every time I see codes and tech stuff. A few days ago I went to the gc on fb for the "non-techies" and ask what is XFN, and a moderator replied with a link for me to obviously find out the answer. Then the next minute I received an email and though I am "ignorant " with the link he gave me at the end of the link asking me to "wpresetpw=login ". I instantly feel like something is wrong. The header is not coming from WP. So I go to my site and ask the support and give the screen shot of the email and they said it is not came from them and that it was fraudulent email. Fortunately I didn't click ed it. This is why I vowed to learn and be patient. I thought blogging is easy😃. Lesson learned, sometimes the "who-knows" took advantage of the "know-nothing".
htaccess file works differently on the WP Engine platform because they use a dual web-server combination of Apache and Nginx. We recommend you get in touch with them for assistance. As to the files, you can't have two Index.php and two Redirects.txt files. So if you already have them on your site, make sure you test first before overwriting one or the other. Also, since these are server-level redirects, it would be best if you check with your web host first and ask their advice on how to best implement the cloaking process mentioned in the article we provided.
