Masking canopies!
In this video tutorial you will see how I mask and paint the canopies of my scale models using DIY masks made of masking tape. You will also see the visual impact painting from the inside as well as from the outside have on the appearance of a plastic scale model.

Thank you for sharing this. This could be a stupid question, but why you need the liquid mask? Save on the masking tape?
@MMScaleModels
@MMScaleModels 3 года назад
The liquid mask is not going to lift on you and additionally keeps the tape in check (especially on complex shapes). Also it is a bit faster to apply.

I use similar but slightly effective technology. I take black pigment (from art store), and put it on the canopy with soft brush. Next I stick masking tape over canopy with a pigment. Then I remove masking tape and stick it on transparent film or scotch tape (on the sticky side). Next add 1-2 layers of masking tape over tape with pigment. And cut it with model knife or scissors.

@rocketassistedgoat1079
@rocketassistedgoat1079 7 лет назад
Haha, yes. Even just using the Montex masks on my He.111 [14 of which I had to replace by hand-as the vinyl won't remain stuck to curves-so I'm sticking with Eduard from now on]; was a tremendous amount of work-which I wouldn't want to repeat on the inside. Whilst interior framing looks fantastic on .48th and larger, I can't help but feel that the thickness of the parts in '72nd dilutes the effect-by drawing the eye to...the thickness of the part. A solution would be to use vac parts, but they're usually inferior to the kit parts in terms of transparency, and there's also less material to sand (I like to fair them in with epoxy putty; sanding [wet] with 400, then 1000 grit sandpaper, then 8000 and 12000 grit Micromesh restores the transparency]. There's ultimately no way to completely win-you have to sacrifice something somewhere. Another thing I needed to consider, was light-blocking-as it's lit from the inside with LEDs; so that means a fair few layers of paint-including a layer of black. I don't know how decals would handle with that many layers, plus; there can't be any gaps anywhere. I know someone who uses decals for '72nd bombers and swears by the method. I guess it comes down to whatever works. Your method sure does look good, I might use it on vac-formed turret parts-where I want the parts to be thin, as the edge can be seen.
@MMScaleModels
@MMScaleModels 7 лет назад
For sure vac formed canopies are the way to go in small scales, it is also true that I didn't use the best clear part for the tutorial, there are much better injection moulded clear parts... like those in eduard's 1/72 bf 110 kits.

I like this way if cutting the tape rather than going along the line with the tape in place. One little slip up and you know what the results of that are? 😮🤦🏻‍♂️ The only thing I do different as far as painting goes and this is just my way, not saying yours is incorrect, but the way I do it is once I get the masking all finished on the outside, I just use wide strips of masking tape to completely cover the inside, then I paint the interior color onto the outside of the frames, then after that paint is good and dry I paint the exterior color right over the interior color and you basically have the same result. If you look inside the canopy the frames are the interior color and when you look on the outside of the canopy it's the exterior color. Your way probably provides more depth and that's just my guess, regardless, I won't use my Xacto on the outside of the canopy anymore. Far too easy to ruin the canopy that way. I'll use your method which is far better and no risk of an unintended scratch in the clear part. As you can imagine, it can make 4 to 6 weeks of work or whatever and pretty much ruin what would've been a nice model. Thank you kindly for your video and for your time. Best wishes, Michael Truhett U.S.C.G. Veteran Semper Paratus 🇺🇸

Hi Michael, thanks for your comment. If you paint only from the outside you will have the interior color but you'll also have the shine of the plastic and a certain perception of depth (the frame is behind the glass). If You choose to walk the extra mile you'll get not only the sheen you are after but also some relief.

that's an excellent way to ruin your canopy

too much complex system , you only have to put tape on glass and cut them directly on it , this system can be viable for opened canopy only .
@MMScaleModels

Well it is time consuming but damaging your clear parts is much less likely.

Mask outside only and paint interior color first and then exterior color !! Masking inside is messy and in vain!!

Sorry, I don't like the outcome at all. This is some of the worst and most coarse edge separation I've ever seen.

I don't remember the brand I used in the video. Tamiya's tape works just as well.
