No wonder, Google recommends your video on the first search itself. Thank you so much. BTW, What if a user does not want to move the outline while dragging and dropping images into the layer.
Wow, I didn't know Google was recommending my video!😍 So you can chose if you want to include the outline or not. By default when you import the PDF from Figma into Canva, Canva will automatically place that outline as the top layer. So in order to add an image or video into the frame you would first need to move that outline to the back layer (using the position feature), next insert the image into the frame, and then finally move the outline back to the top layer. Does that make sense?
@@thecreativekatstudio Yes, I saw that in video. It may cause little confusion to users. I think the position of layers will do the job IMO. I mean, if the image filled layer is on top most and the outline layer below it, Canva can accept the dropped image directly without moving the outline layer. Sorry for my English.
That's super great Kat, I am watching the video and it comes to my mind about adding outline to the frame then u explain about that.. I'm so grateful ❤
wow.... you are so awesome tutor Kat..... you're the best.... thanks for sharing your skills with us... Woohoo.... you deserve all the Sub in the world.... glad to stumble upon your Channel.... God bless always...
Love the video! It's simpler to understand than others I've watched. However, I export from Figma and go to upload/drag and drop the PDF, I see it uploading but doesn't show up in my designs... I am not sure what I am doing wrong. :(
I was having a couple of issues with that as well recently. It might just be a hiccup with Canva. Also, double check inside of your projects folder to see if it’s there.
Thanks for a short but comprehensive tutorial. How do I add the custom frame to CANVA without having to detach image every time I need the element? Thanks Kat
Double check to make sure you have all the layers expanded and bring all the vector layers to the top. Sometimes there are hidden layers depending on how complicated your SVG file is.
also I want to use graphics instead of photos but some graphics don't automatically adhere to the shape is there a way to still use those graphics that dont shape to the shape?
You mean you want to insert graphics in the frame? The only way to so that would be to save the graphic as an image, and then you can place it in the frame shape.
Another great Canva training, Kat! I've seen the basic training on how to create frames before, but as you always do, you took it to another level and gave additional creative ways to learn how to move it up a notch. I also had not heard about Figma before, so looking forward to trying all of these techniques out.
So glad you enjoyed it! You can create frames in several programs. I’ve seen it done with PowerPoint, Word, Figma, Photoshop, and Illustrator (which is what I use for my own fames because I’m also an Adobe user).
Make sure when you download your image from Canva you're downloading them as transparent SVG files. Any other format won't give you the layers that you need.
You're a great teacher. I have an issue when I try to bring my text with a stroke into canva. I lose the stroke. For the life of me, I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. I'm about to cry. loll
So for some reason the stroke on text that you create natively in Figma no longer works. I recommend creating your text in Canva first and bring that into Figma. Also , when you add the stroke, set the placement of the stroke to "outside". That will help things line up better once you bring it back into Canva.
You are a great teacher by the way!! Just wondering if you have done a video already or can do a video on making a multi photo collage. I was able to do that with the paw print, but what I want to do is take a silhouette of a dog and do a collage. There are several I can purchase on Etsy but they are limited and don’t always have a specific dog shape that I want so I wanted to learn to make one on my own. Thank you!
@@thecreativekatstudio Thank you! I have seen some others do that with letters and other things but they were using word and I don’t have it. I have a Mac and I tried to use a free version of word but there isn’t a free one anymore. I don’t know some of the other programs people have been using enough to determine what to do to get the same effect. I appreciate you looking into it.
Since you are downloading as SVG they would still be treated as separate layers, even if they were grouped. So you would need to use the "union" option in Figma if you want a frame with multiple parts to be combined as one.
So since you really can't save frames, I just make a design file and put a bunch of the frames I've made in there. you can also copy them to Canva's whiteboard so you have them when you need them.
@@thecreativekatstudioThank you, Thank you, Thank you!!! I wondered how to put a stroke on it. So excited. I have made several frames, this way, but always wondered how to put the stroke on it. I like doing the separate frames, as in the dog paw example, where you united the five different layers, I leave them separate. Now, what would you export them as, to sell them? Do you leave them as a PDF, from Fig*, or do you export them as something else, from Can,* since you have to remove that checkerboard pattern? Also, I am not sure if you’ve run across this problem, but under the “Fill” section, in Fig,* sometimes the “image” fill doesn’t show up, so you have to use the drop down menu, to find it. I’m not sure if I had trouble with it because I wasn’t just using silhouettes, sometimes I used any colorful graphic element, so, maybe, that is why it didn’t show up, but I have had that happen a few times. *I’m so sorry, I can’t name the full site, because this platform, you have your videos on, keeps removing my comments for naming other sites. They even blocked me from commenting for 24 hours, due to naming sites outside of this platform, and it had to do with design software and such. So be careful, people, they don’t even tell you what comment was removed, they just say it’s for spam, scam, or something else. In the rules of their comments, now, you can not name sites that take people off of this platform, or so they say. I had to figure it out for myself what it was, because they don’t tell you what comment they removed, or why they removed it, and won’t let you even explain anything. They aren’t reading them, they probably have some sort of AI flagging them. I don’t know, it’s weird, because I see other people naming the same sites and they’re comments are fine. It’s so strange. Thanks, again, for all you do, your videos are some of the best. You’re a great instructor. 😊
@@MissMolly3377 Most people won’t know what to do with it if you leave it as a PDF, so I bring the PDFs into Canva and remove the checkerboard myself so that the frame is fully ready for use by the customer. My frames always come as sets so there are usually several frames on the Canva design file. Then you’ll want to share it as a Canva template link if you plan to sell it. This way when someone purchases it, it won’t destroy your original.
@@thecreativekatstudio hm, unfortunately, I cannot download a font. The message "origin not alined to pixels. dimensions may expand by a pixel" appears. Could you please tell me, how to solve this problem?
@@staycurious0815 This error shows up on occasion when the shape or word you're trying to export isn't selected. But you can ignore it, you should still be able to export the PDF. If it's still giving you issues, make sure the shape or word is selected first, then click the export button.
I went back to review previous posts and found the instructions for adding the convertio step. I was able to get it to work by doing that. Thanks for checking on me.
New subscriber here, I just love the way you teach. Now I'm obsessed with making my own Canva frames. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with all of us.
Thank you for this! Was trying to achieve this but gave up halfway.. Glad to come across your video.. Will definitely subscribe and am turning on my notifications!!
If you're talking about creating an outline for your Canva frame, that part needs to be done in Figma first. Then when you export the PDF from Figma and bring it into Canva, both the frame and the outline will be there.
Just stumbled on your channel and this is one of the BEST Canva Frames tutorials I've come across. It is detailed and fun! Thank you so much for sharing such an invaluable lesson. I'm a new sub!
Thank you so much for this video. I especially liked that you did so many examples. I had watched a video of someone else before on how to do this, but she hurried through the process and only did it once. Your teaching style is so much better. So, of course, I had to subscribe to your channel 🙂
Which video, of yours, shows how you can rotate/turn a photo to put in a frame, like if I wanted to put it in sideways. I forget how you did that, and I can’t remember which one of your videos you showed that. Or, do you just turn the picture before you put it in. I know I have tried to do it before, but I couldn’t do it for some reason. Thanks for this video. I have made frames before using this method, and for the projects I have in mind, I will be making my own. 😊
You can rotate the image before, or after it’s in the frame. To do it after, just double click the frame and it will allow you to edit the photo, including rotating it.
I loved this and how clear you spoke and repeating the process. God bless you for getting started immediately and not dragging out the beginning segment.
I have been watching different videos of others using figma for 2 days going step by step. Yours is the FIRST that Finally got it right! Now I see what was missed in the other videos I watched and why I could not get the frame to appear right in Canva. THANK YOU!!
!!!! You have literally no idea how helpful this is to me! I've been chasing my tail trying to use a PDF image as a clipping mask in Canva. And the outline thing...genius. Thank you!
So i found the image and got a message it failed saying there is only one image or graphic on your design premium images can't be exported on there own. Add another and try again
That's because Canva implemented a new system for Pro elements. They can't be downloaded as a single image. Free elements work just fine. A workaround is to add a small white square shape to the design (maybe in the corner), and then download it. Once you upload it to Photopea, you can delete the small square.
@@lynphilion1501 oh no, I'm sorry. You can just upload to Figma. My apologies! I have two videos that show how to create frames, one uses Figma, the other uses Photopea. So sorry for the confusion.🤦🏻♀
@@thecreativekatstudio OMG!!! I have been watching YT videos for days looking for this very answer! I am using Photopea to make the frame and I am unable to delete the box but I am able to crop it out. I love your videos - you have helped me so much! Thank you, Thank you Creative Kat!!
When I create stroke on text in Figma, export as PDF, import to CANVA, the text image remains in the font selected, but the stroke part changes to a different font. Any ideas on what's causing that to happen?
There are couple things I’ve noticed with Figma if you are only typing out one word... 1). When you bring it back into Canva, there will be an extra font layer. This layer will be imported as a random font name simply because sometimes exact fonts vary from application to application. You can change it to whatever font you want in Canva, but you honestly don’t need this layer since what you’re going for is the frame itself. 2). When creating a stroke on a SINGLE word in Figma, it doesn't seem to import into Canva. I’m not quite sure why this happens but I’m looking into it. However, when you add more than one word (like I showed in the video with coffee time) and you join them with the “Union Selection” feature so it’s all one frame, then when you bring them into Canva it DOES work correctly, including the outline. A workaround if you want to only use a single word is to type out that word in Canva first, download as transparent SVG and bring it into Figma. Figma will treat each letter as a separate thing, so make sure to use the union selection feature to combine all the letters so they are one frame. Then you can give it the image fill AND a stroke that will import correctly into Canva. (If you plan on doing it this way, when you select the stroke there are 3 options for where the line falls (inside, outside, and center). Set this option to outside. That way it won't interfere with your frame and it will give you a nice clean line.) I hope all of that made sense.😃
I would love to be able to do this, but for some reason when I go to fill in the checker board pattern, it’s light grey. When I uploaded the svg file to Canva, it still light grey and I can’t detect the top layer or see it as a back ground. I am using my iPad, not sure if that makes a difference. Do you have any trouble shooting tips? Despite the problems I’m having I love your tutorial and had to subscribe.
Since this video was release 7 months ago, Figma had some updates to their platform. Now if you want to add the fill, you'll click on the fill with image option like before, but the next step is you need to upload an image and then it will work correctly when you bring it over to Canva. I plan to rerecord this video reflecting the change.
@@thecreativekatstudio Thank you so much for responding. I was able to upload the image in Figma, but when I uploaded it into Canva it was an image and I could not use it as a frame. Is this part different as well or am I doing something wrong? Thank you so much for your help, I am so grateful.
@@lanamcquown3063 make sure when you download from Figma you are choosing PDF. Figma has a tendency to default to png so you need to change it when you download. Then it will import right in Canva.
why does my outline transfer to canva as a Ariel type style outline when I am using other fonts. I have followed your video and can't get it to work. Please help
22:53 of video. I add the stroke. add picture to the fill. Export as pdf, and when I bring it into canva the outline is totally different then what the outline should be.
@@waynecordingley4157 Oooh ok. Yes, I think I did had this happened to me once before when I was working with text. Off the top of my had I don't recall exactly what caused it, but let me see if I can recreate the issue and I'll get back to you.
No matter what I do, my frame will not fill, only the background is being filled instead of the image in Figma. Does anyone know what I could be doing wrong, I know it’s, my error, because I have viewed more than one video :(
Here are a few tips... 1) In Canva keep your graphic a single solid color. That will help. 2) When downloading from Canva the format needs to be SVG. 3) In Figma, make sure you are only working with the vector layer as I described in the video. If you are still having issues, send me a message and maybe we can hop on a video call to see where you might be missing a step.
@@thecreativekatstudio I think I know what the problem might be. I am not using an image from elements. I have a black teardrop shaped object, I took a picture of it with my camera and uploaded the image to Canva. I want to turn that image to a canva frame, but only the background will change colors. The goal is to create a Canva frame for my teardrop shaped earrings, so the shape needs to be an exact match, and the Canva elements teardrop is not an exact shape match. I hope that makes sense.
@@barbra429 Ok that requires a different method. 1) In Canva convert your teardrop into a Duotone image and set the colors to black. 2) Download your image as a transparent PNG file. 3) Go to the website Convertio.co and upload the PNG. There you can convert it to an SVG. 4) Upload the SVG into Figma and then follow the rest of the steps in my video to bring the vector file to the top. Then you'll be able to give it the image fill and make it a frame.
