This is good for demonstration purposes only. In real world we separate x and y axis individually. It means when it moves along x axis it depends on parameter t and so we have x(t). for y axis we may or may not have the same parameter t, and so we get maybe y(t) or y(g) for example. This means t is the same parameter used for x. But , if it uses different parameter it uses g for example. And maybe g stands for gravity. This is called parametric equation whereby x and y may or may not have some relationship in the context of a function.
