Altstadt Echo is back for another visit in our Berlin studio. This time he teaches us how to create classic dub techno chords, by only using Ableton live's stock plug ins. However you should be able to create the the same results with any kind of polyphonic software or hardware synth you can get your hands on.
If you want to know more about Dubtechno make sure to check out Altstadt Echoes new RU-vid Channel Dubmonitor: / dubmonitor

This was super helpful for me as a beginning producer. Thanks! In addition to learning about the basics of the dub techno sound, it was also a great introduction to Ableton Push.

Great tutorial on a classic sound that never gets old for me! I have also had success using a bandpass filter where Altstadt uses a notch filter. I find that I like to play my chords low (lower than middle C) and move the BP through a higher range so that all you get are the crackly remnants of the higher harmonics.

Hello, ✌️ I just got Hooked into the DubTechno “Winter-Basement” Sound in the Chords… I Just got into DubTechno, basically a month ago and I admire that “Sound” in the chords….. Is there any Name / nickname for this amazing Sound ??? Because I love the more Monotonous DubTechno where this Sound is more consistent and the Beat is regular 4/4 , and not something too crazy, so I can find more of it maybe by Googling the name of the sound. And one last thing: Can someone please give me few names of Good DubTechno artists? Or tracks? To begin with 🙂 Thanks In Advance !

Nice and easy tutorial! The chords sound very warm and organic. Subtleness is key here. I am going to try that with my analog equipment, which will be a lot of fun. Without randomization options this can get boring, though. Is it typical for dub techno that chords are changing only so little? I wonder what happens if you insert more melodic variation...
@DubMonitor
@DubMonitor 3 года назад
Really depends. Very early dub techno was highly minimalistic and tended to have very simplistic chord progressions. Over time people have experimented with having longer patterns, etc. But in general I'd say the more variation you can achieve through modulation the better. When I'm working on tracks lots of times I'll have LFOs of varying lengths affecting many many different "knobs," whether it's on the synth itself or the effects that follow it.

Dub Monitor Thanks for the insight! My ambient approach on music is quite similar, so I'll have „translation“ going on soon.

10:30 Now explain the difference between a phaser and a resonant notch filter with a LFO. 😂 OK I know it’s a little more complicated but a phaser is basically a multi-stage notch + bandpass filter with an LFO, so it’s funny to hear them say: (1) Add an LFO, then (2) add a notch filter with an LFO, then (3) add a phaser. That’s a lot of LFOs. But seriously there are a lot of different phasers. The average phaser like an MXR is a bit fast, but there are nice pedals like the Dreadbox Lethargy which are really good for an autofilter-like effect. But y’all are just playing around in Ableton so nevermind!

Meh. The chord is too low, needs noise, needs upper harmonics, needs a vocoder processing.
