Learn how to create external hyperlinks in Microsoft Word. Specifically, we will create links to separate files, websites, and email addresses. We will also look at how to edit or remove hyperlinks. Lastly, we will go through the steps to turn off automatic hyperlinking in Word.
These steps are for Word for Microsoft 365 (formerly Office 365), Word 2019, Word 2016, Word 2013, and Word 2010.

Thank you for the the step-by-step instructions and the visuals! I am technically challenged and would like to know how to edit a video link. I'm trying to add the word video, to an existing link, so that when a person wants to view the video, all they have to do is click on the word, without having the (long) actual link. Please advise!

Is there a way that when you click a text link in MSWord that's linked to a specific slide in PowerPoint. How can I get it to go directly to a slideshow versus just the slide without doing the slideshow step?

That is a great question! The trick is to "Save As" the PowerPoint as a PowerPoint Show rather than a regular PowerPoint file. Then, use the link for the PowerPoint Show (which is a .ppsx instead of a .pptx) as the hyperlink in your Word file. I hope that helps!

Thank you for watching! I am not aware of a way to make hyperlinks in RU-vid as shown in this tutorial. However, you can copy and paste URLs directly into comments. However, comments with links have a much greater chance of being marked as spam.

To create a link from a word to a file in cloud storage, (1) select the Insert tab, (2) select the word you want to link from, (3) select the Link button, (4) select “Existing file or webpage” in the Insert Hyperlink dialog box, (5) enter the address from the file in cloud storage into the Address text box, (6) select the OK button. That is a great question! Hyperlinks created in Word should work when exported to PDF. However, links in PDFs can be temperamental, so be sure to test it on various platforms (e.g., desktop, mobile). Thank you so much for watching!

I need to turn back on the feature that automatically activates (creates) a hyperlink in a Word document. It's when it turns the letters blue and underlines it. Or it's when I copy and paste a URL and it's an active link. Again, the letters are blue and underlined. It used to work. Now it doesn't. HELP.

I want to create a hyperlink within a Word 365 doc to an image file stored on local drive C. This works for a PDF file. When trying this with a JPG file, link creation fails, and a blank MS Internet Explorer screen pops up. I think that Microsoft has officially retired IE as of today, but I tried this yesterday with same result..

Pressing Ctrl + click is meant to prevent users from accidentally clicking links while they are writing or editing. However, you can turn that feature off by going to File > Options > Advanced > uncheck "Use CTRL + Click to follow hyperlink" > OK. Thank you for watching!

Please make a video detailing the laborious procedure needed in order to make a relative link to a picture file, which link should open the picture file when it is located in any folder which also contains the Word .doc, the picture file, or a .pdf file of the Word .doc itself. Microsoft has made this about as difficult as can be. This is why I think Microsoft software is about the worst software in the world. And I will always try to replace any Microsoft product with a free alternative. Hint: think {FILENAME \p}/../
