Oh, quick disclaimer; this was filmed last year way back before lockdown and social distancing rules introduced in the UK just to let you know! Also, as we approach 20k subscribers we wanted to thank you all again for the crazy support you've all shown the channel so far, THANK YOU!
I was the Art Director for the first season of Stranger Things. You guys nailed this. The one thing you are missing is that it was freezing cold on stage the day we shot this and Millie was a real trooper splashing around in the cold water. SFX tried to heat it, but it was too shallow to retain any heat.
I immediately from the opening shot recognized the reference to Under the Skin. And the lady does look almost as beautiful as Scarlet Johansson. I adore this horror/sci-fi movie. It’s worth the watch. And a didn’t Millie wear a wetsuit underneath her wardrobe?. That really retains the body heat.
I'd say the fact I didn't realise Pete wasn't originally in the film, until he surprisingly showed up in your studio, is testament to how well you pulled off the effect!
@@InCameraTV Given that the guys in the movie all got slowly digested alive floating in the black goo of the void, he oughta be glad he wasn't there :D
Wow, what a lovely comment; thank you so much! We pride ourselves on wanting to deliver high quality content to you all so it's great to see comments like this!
Man, the fact that this channel exists almost makes me giddy with happiness. Such a goldmine! And after binging all the previous videos the other day, after discovering it, it's such a joy to have a new video to watch.
@@InCameraTV On a slightly less gushing note, I must say that besides the fascinating subject matter, the fact that the episodes are extremely well shot and edited is amazing, and surprisingly easily overlooked (which I guess is a testament to the quality, that it renders itself invisible). And as a bonus - for me - all the rigging shots bring back memories of the summer I worked on building theater sets for an amateur theater festival (in Västerås, Sweden), climbing around on ladders, hanging lights and things like that. Also, not having seen Under the Skin, it took a good while before I realized the intro was tampered with. :)
The film "under the skin "with the soundtrack and black void scene is haunting and exhilarating at the same time, the black void just pulls the audience in.Great job as always .Peace.
I adore this movie. I actually thought Scarlett was British because of it. Then I read she’s a New Yorker. I love her in these indie flicks, it really shows that she’s more than a beautiful action heroess. I love her role in JoJo Rabbit too.
Guys! It's been 3 days or so when I last checked and your sub count has increased by 6 thousand the growth of this channel's growth is amazing I bet you'll be at a 100 thousand before the end of the year
A tip from a VFX artist: instead of crushing your blacks to get rid of all unwanted detail, try shooting a clean plate of the empty set, then subtract this from your footage to create a perfectly black background. Might require some rough roto to hold out the actor, but should get you a much better starting point for further grading
Even though I don't work in the industry, this is fascinating to watch. I've always been a fan of watching how movies are made, especially the 70's/80's when miniature were the done thing.
just so you know I typed a very specific long keyword on RU-vid to find this cause i randomly thinking about how they made this scene in stranger things after years of wondering about it
I was very excited, when I saw Scarlett Johanson, imagined how you guys know each other from somewhere and she just visited you one day in the studio for a cup of coffee or something and decided to help out and then BAM! You got me in the first half, not gonna lie.
I work in VFX, and the best VFX are accomplished with getting as much footage in-camera practically as safely possible on set. It's always fun to see how stuff gets done practically.
We keep the cables from the floor… Back in 2009 I was the special effects and prop maker for this TV show the next Uri Geller. And I Just consulted a talent and I walked back to my workshop offstage and walked down the little dark steps and slipped. I fell backwards with my back landing on the steps and my head hitting the main stage. Knocking the wind out of me. So the sound guy called in and the room lights go on. And we saw that the hazer on my side of the stage had sprung a leak. And there was easily like 10 liters of water. And the water was only about 1.5 meters away from a couple of 380V distribution boxes that laid back stage. So the crew came in with towels and mobs to clean up the water. And the rehearsal for the live show airing 4 hours later was done with the room lights on. Much to the producer and director’s frustration. Water on a black floor is truly invisible.
i have "Under the skin" and i've watched 2 or 3 times. i was watching the first few minutes of this film, and was thinking, i don't remember seeing a guy with a rubber floating device in it, great job! 😂
This channel feels like a collection of the coolest behind-the-scenes secrets I usually only get to see in my wildest dreams. Stranger Things hardly having any behind-the-scenes content whatsoever only reinforces this feeling.
It's especially nice since the push for everything to go online has basically killed most BTS content for anything beyond bloopers and deleted scenes. The days where you get Harry Potter, LOTR, American Werewolf, etc. quality BTS from a film release is all but dead.
I wish you would have showed how you manipulated the footage in post to make the void look the way it ended up and how you mixed your footage in with the film.
Found this channel today and immediately binged all the videos, so happy to have found such a great channel. Keep up all the great content!!!! P.S forever waiting for y'all to go full send and recreate the hallway scene from Inception haha.
I found this to be pretty interesting. It also makes me wonder what the surface would be like if you used something other than water. There are a lot of interesting non-toxic fluids out there that could be used, with interesting properties. e.g. Maybe finding a fluid that didn't splash as easily, could add to the creep factor of someone running through this liquid, which seems to act like water, but it isn't splashing.
It is a scary concept but Tommy knows what he's doing, risk assessments and all. We played with it in the edit but this was 100% safe from start to finish 💪 Thanks so much for constant support 😘
DUDE! Before even watching the video: This so spooky! Two weeks ago or so I was looking and searching and searching and trying to find out how they did it in Under the Skin, even rewatched and paused the movie 2 weeks ago. Thank you for this!
@@InCameraTV For sure! Do you guys think I could possibly achieve similar results without rigging lights up in the air, but reflecting lights from the ground up into the air against a cloth? This would make the light very soft and I would cut massive corners and costs, problem would be light spillage or pollution, though, right?
@@LiottaSeoul hey liotta you saure could try, using some floppy flags etc would stop direct spill, or even some black sheets if you're pushed. Thing is the light would be alot softer as it's not directional. Alsonyoud want to make sure there are as few spots on the cloth as possible for that nice even light.
I haven't seen 'Under the Skin', so during the opening scene I was thinking, "That girl looks kind of like Scarlett Johansson... Is it? No way they could get her... I swear that's her though." Great job on the effect, and integration into the original footage!
One thing you could have tried would be using a polarizer to adjust the reflectivity of the water and the liner. It might be tricky because the surface of the water is refracting the reflections on the liner which I *think* puts them on weird planes from each other. But a polarizer would probably knock the reflections down on both. It also helps that you're shooting at a 90-degree angle to the surface of the water. This was a great tutorial! Can't wait to see what's next from you all.
That's the great thing, there's so many ways certain effects can be achieved! And like Tom says in the video, he would've done a few things differently if we had more budget or if we were to do it again! Thanks for the comment, glad you liked the video!
@@InCameraTV There's ALWAYS another way lol. It's kind of mad how often I look back at a project and go "well I would have done that a totally different way."
That opening sequence is absolute genius! 🤣 I once shot under a waterfall in a place aptly called... ‘waterfall’ in Australia before battery powered location lights were a thing, so massive generators and powered lights, in water, was terrifying! We came up with a washing lone like system for the leads. Nice work guys, always wanted to try this in studio. Genius flagging!
This is your best video yet guys. Keep it up and thanks for recreating effects I almost kinda knew how they were done. But one thing is reading about it or watching some BTS but it's great how you show how many steps are actually involved. Would love to see you tackle some of the in camera effects of older movies like Citizen Kane.
I love this channel so much. Thank you for all the info in these. I'd love it if you could go over your camera gear one day, it would help immensely to see the tools you use to create these beautiful things.
Dude. I have no idea how I found this channel, but my life is all the better for it. Love seeing how things are done, really cool. Subbed and commented. Wish your channel much success, from CA USA.
Me: Dang, my leg hurts a bit today, I should probably watch something to help. *NEW IN CAMERA VIDEO DROPS* ME: New priorty detected! Plans for next 20 minues cleared!
Could this black void effect be recreated at night? Just filming at complete darkness and an overhead softlight? Or is it best to stay in an enclosed space?
It really depends how you want it to look. You could achieve something similar outside, either with the surface available or one you create, but it would have to be pretty big to stretch into the darkness. The beauty of an interior space is control, over sound, climate, the public etc!
your channel is amazing! your content is so pro! Thanks for all the guidance! When you say elements are available on Patreon, what do you mean by elements? Like prebuilt graphics for videos? Thanks again for all you guys do.
@@InCameraTV Great thank you. I'm considering the $21.50 subscription right now. Can you tell me, will the older elements from previous months ever become available again, or are they available to purchase somewhere else? I only just discovered your channel a few days ago, and really like what you're doing.
My guess would have been that they tracked the subjects with spotlights as they moved in Stranger Things. Technically, they only had a chair and Elle to track, so it might have been easy to do.
Could the lights above the "pool" be replaced by mirrors reflecting the lights from the sides for better safety - or do they have to be so close to the pool?
Potentially. Though suspending glass above talent sounds dangerous too! R at assured, this was a very safe rig. And all our fixtures are surge protected 😊
A setup like this (minus the water) would work great for Pepper's Ghost or a "hologram-like" projection from the Star Wars universe! Are there any particular fabrics you would recommend for creating a dark void?
