HOW TO CREATE YOUR DREAM SPACE: How to Create a Mood Board (Episode 6)
Welcome back to the How to Create Your Dream Space series! 6 weeks in and we are FINALLY creating mood boards!
Some designers start with this step, but I find it imperative to teach you the fundamentals of interior design like function and space planning before diving into creating mood boards. Now that you have sourced pieces to perfectly fit within your space, I want to show you how to pull it all together so it’s cohesive and inspiring.
This method helps you to stop dreaming and start DOING. However you decide to create your mood board, remember that the goal is to make decisions that ultimately speak to your lifestyle, personality and aspirations. Add images and pieces to the mood board that you are actually going to source for your space. Take a step back and ask yourself- do you like what you see? Can you do better? Play with the combinations until you are satisfied with the mood, vibe, colors, and details. The goal is to LOVE the space and have a blast designing it!

I use Pinterest to save all the things I find when browsing online, then go back and sort/delete them later. Helps me narrow things down and keep my ideas organized. Plus I get inspiration from other pins.

I am still defining my own interior design style 😎 I love warm colors so when I bought my house in 2013, I painted the walls with a yellow color 😂. It was very hard for me to change the wall color to a neutral color, light pewter from Benjamin Moore. But now I love it. The house looks bigger and bright. This was a big first step.

I love your content. I've always liked design, and had a little bit of a natural feel for it, but now thanks to watching your recent videos the pieces are really clicking! I can't wait to finalize closing on my new home this month and start refinishing the home. Even after just about two months of watching and a bit of application, you've helped me feel confident making choices about my space. I've really appreciated your content, you're a great teacher. Also to answer your video's question, I usually keep notes in my drawing/ writing journals for ideas and creative projects, and usually let my ideas form there mainly, but I do keep pinterest. There no tool like it and invaluable for getting new ideas. I will probably use photoshop for the next design step like you do since I have it anyway.

I have used Pages on mac. You can remove the background easily and layer pictures using the "instant alpha" feature button. Pretty cool.

My question: We want to decorate our new house with a muted serene color palette (slate blue, greige, sage green, dusky purple, etc - with pops of brighter colors through accessories). However, a favorite painting that I’ve always hung in my kitchen area is bright ultramarine blue, yellow, red, and orange. How can I make this painting fit in with our muted space?

Keep the painting relegated to one room and pull in another color from the painting with accessories and home decor. The rest of the home can be the muted color palette, since the art piece is only seen in one room. Have fun with it J!

I’ve been using Houzz for ideas and saving all my pics in there. But I feel like I’m stuck in the “dream” part. Im going to try saving some of those photos and opening them up in PS. Thanks for that idea! Maybe I’ll be able to actually make things happen if I boil it down to a 8.5x11 size paper I can print out and stick on the wall where I can see it.

This is such a great and helpful series - thank you! Is your process for designing a new home the same? I'm wondering because I'll soon be building a new house, and it feels a little overwhelming to plan each room's rugs and furniture before plumbing fixtures and paint colors since the builder needs those decisions pretty quickly. I want to be as thoughtful as I can though to stick to a plan and keep the flow of colors and textures as cohesive as possible. Thanks again for the insight into your process!

Yes, this is my EXACT process Carrilyn. A majority of design professionals design the entire space before construction starts, that way every detail is built out specifically for each need. That’s why they pay us the big bucks, lol 😉 You can do it!! 🙌🏻 Overwhelming at first, but the excitement will help build your momentum

I have to think this over. When scrapbooking started to go digital, I was completely against it. I still am. I'm someone that likes to touch the papers, move them around, play with Embellishments, distress the edges, burnish paper with brown antiquing, and maybe highlight with a shimmery gold. Sometimes I use colored chalks to make it all look dusty and soft. It's a technique you can't get with digital. It's very hands-on. And I would miss it. I always thought I would create a mood board in my craft room using papers and fabrics and such. I have two blank slates, a framed cork board and a padded, floral fabric one. Perhaps digital is something I should try.

Julie, thank you SOOOOOOOOOO much for this series. I have learned so much. In the process of purchasing a new home and you have given me so many ideas. Can you suggest a good sofa to purchase? Leather and upholstered option. A few year ago I purchased a beautiful sofa ($3200.00) however, over time the seat cushions have flattened. This is not attractive. Hi! I use Microsoft Power Point. Seems very basic but you can set up the page size and it allows you to remove the background from images. I did the blueprints to my house in it too

No specific height, it’s your personal preference. My nightstands are 35” high and I’ve specified 42” chests before. Go with what works for you Shyka!

Here's a little tip for a mood board: open a personal group on WhatsApp for storing photos of all the great items you see in stores, homes, offices, etc., and you can download them later or share with clients/friends/family.
