How to crochet a baby /children's cardigan / sweater/ jacket up to 12 months with buttons

Welcome to my channel Crochet for Baby. In today's tutorial I will show you how to crochet this easy Alex baby cardigan sweater for boys and girls between 6-9m but can easily be made for NB and up to 9-12 months. Since this is a very easy to follow crochet along type of tutorial i hope everyone even beginner can enjoy making this easy crochet baby cardigan.
For this crochet baby Alex sweater tutorial I used red heart baby hugs yarn and a 5.5 mm crochet hook. I also used about 178g of yarn. You will also need six 14mm size buttons.

SIZE:
NB use a 4mm hook with #4, Aran or 10ply yarn
0-3 use a 4.5mm hook with #4, Aran or 10ply yarn
3-6M use a 5mm hook with #4, Aran or 10ply yarn
6-9M use a 5.5mm hook with #4, Aran or 10ply yarn
9-12M use a 6mm hook with #4, Aran or 10ply yarn
*Please ignore the sizes mentioned at the beginning and at the end of the tutorial. Based on feedback from others who have made the sweater, the size is bigger more like 6-9M and NOT 3-6M.

I love your channel! You have given me the confidence I needed and never knew I had. I made this using a 5mm hook and category 4 yarn. It came out so cute. I didn’t use the ready made holes for the buttons. I just made a little button band instead. Some are donated and some my daughter keeps. They can be special gifts for my family long after I’m gone. 💜

Thank you Sara!!I just completed my sweater...omg it is so cute!! I had forgotten how I disliked the FPHD and BPHD because I could never get it right. That is why most of my work I tried to avoid most patterns with those stitches...but when I came to the bottom of the sweater. I was like "Oh no" but I surprised myself and did my best and it turned out just perfect...from now on I will not run away and stress out on how to do it..hahahha

Do the same as the 1st sleeve. 1dc on first ch, 2dc on 2nd ch and 1dc on 3rd ch.

Your sweaters are beautiful and clear instructions. I am always confused on attaching sleeves. I hope you can understand my question. Since you have already attached one sleeve, I'm not sure if you always go in the same direction on each sleeves once you have attached the yarn. You are working on the sleeve on the left side, and I know you attach the yarn, then chain 3 and turn. So you are going toward the front of the sweater, right? When starting the right sleeve, once you have attached the yarn, chained 3 and turn, are you still going toward the front of the sweater. Thanks so much.

Just continue with that number and decrease two extra stitches in the next few rows. There is not much difference in 2 less or more stitches.

If I am using Caron Simply Soft they recommend a 5.0 mm hook. Would you suggest I used the 5.5 to get the 3 to 6 month size?

If you make 54 dc (counting ch3 as dc) in second row, it seems to me that you would need 44 hdc (counting ch2) in first row, not 45. That would mean chaining 45 instead of 46 to start. Another way of noticing this is that your count increases by ten each row, except only 9 from the first to the second row. Am I missing something?

It's different from all sweaters =, Once you complete a line, when you start the next with the increase, you mention the increases from one side but not on the other side, How do we know exactly where to insert the hook? you do mention that what we do in one side, must be done at the opposite side but not until row # 9, I cannot advance, Can you assist? I just wanted to tell you that you misspoke on the 10th row concerning the second set of the chain three. I am watching the whole video and then I will go back through and attempt to make the sweater. It probably has something to do with your repeats. Make sure that at every row you have the exact number. If you don’t then the mistake is in the repeats.

I am on row 9 where I am joining the sleeves. I had 114 stitches from the row before. You indicate after 2nd sleeve, that there will be 17 remaining stitches; however, I have tried five times now and there are only 15 stitches left after 2nd sleeve. Please assist. I am an experienced crocheter however, this is not working. Thank you.

Are you sure you have 114 dc for row 8? Because if you do, the sleeve divisions should be correct. The first side you have 17 dc including the 3 chains. Skip 25 for the first sleeve this gives you a total of 42 dc. Then 30dc for the back (not counting the extra dc increase since it was done into same stitch and not part of the 8th row). Skip 25dc for 2nd sleeve, dc 17. So 17+ 25+30+25+17=114

On the three chains for the underarms you said put one dc two dc three dc but for the second underarm you said put one dc two dc two dc is that right cause you said do the same as the first underarm?.

On the first sleeve you did 1 dc, 2 dc and 1 dc…then on second sleeve you said do the same but said 1 dc 2 dc 2 dc? Confused, can you explain what to do with the 3 chain in sleeve holes? Thanks

Thanks. I counted again and I have 30 including the ch3. Did you make the 2 stitch reductions at the beginning AND at the end? If you did then just make two more reductions or continue with the 32 since it’s not much of a difference and reduce one extra in the 2nd row and the same in the 3rd row. There is no right or wrong way as long as the sleeves look the same and are both proportionally balanced 😉😊 good luck 👍

It’s for 3-6m so you can make it like this one.

So If I did the whole sweater with the half double crochet stitch, would it end up being smaller?

Yes and you would have to make more rows throughout to compensate for stitch size as it’s smaller than dc. Good luck 👍

I don’t have that size but try 56 chains with a 6.5mm crochet hook and #4 yarn. It might work or it may not. Good luck.

For size 12-18 mos should I use 6 or 6.5 hook?

Do you crochet loose or tight like I do? If you crochet loose then just use the 5.5mm. I’ve been told by a few subscribers here that it fits their 2 year olds when they crochet loose. If you crochet a little tight then use a 6mm. Good luck 👍

Your verbal instructions are confusing sometimes. For example, on row 4, you said to do 4dc in each of the last 4 st. I think you meant do 1 dc in each of the 4 remaining stitches. Slowing down would help. It's a nice, fairly easy pattern.

I did my first chain and measured it’s not 31cm.. it’s around 24 cm.. can I still go ahead and follow your number of stitches? Will it be too small?
