In this video I give a tutorial on how to crochet a cardigan for a stuffed animal! My crochet sweater video is the most viewed video on my channel so I thought I’d also do a cardigan with a different method. I tried to make this tutorial a lot more detailed and slower than my sweater video so this should be doable for everyone regardless of crochet experience! Also make sure to follow my tips along the way or read the written pattern first to avoid some of the mistakes I made 😆
Adapted from this tutorial: • *EASY* Crochet Cardiga...
Written Pattern:
Abbreviations: Ch - chain, HDC - half double crochet, DC - double crochet, SC - single crochet, SS - slip stitch
BACK PANEL:
Measure around stuffed animal’s chest and add 4 cm. (x)
Make a slip knot and crochet a chain until it is a length of x divided by two (x/2) stretch the chain a bit while measuring because after adding the HDC’s it will get longer
Ch 1 and do a half double crochet into the previous chain. HDC until end of chain. Ch 1 and turn. Do a HDC into each stitch until end of the row.
Repeat this process until desired length is reached (measured from stuffed animal’s neck to bottom edge of cardigan) make sure to leave it a little longer than you think
Ch 1 and cut, pull yarn through and pull tight (fasten off)
FRONT PANELS:
Measure straight across stuffed animal’s neck. Subtract that measurement from final measurement of back panel and divide by 2. This is going to be the length of each front panel.
Chain until it is the length calculated above (make sure to stretch it while measuring). HDC into each chain, doing the same process as back panel. Do the same number of rows so the lengths are the same.
Fasten off, leaving a very long tail (at least 30 cm)
SEAMING SHOULDERS + SIDES
Flip front and back panels good side to good side lined up along their shorter sides. Use tail of front panel as working yarn and slip stitch through edges of both panels along entire edge until fully connected. Fasten off.
Try onto stuffed animal to see how far up the sides should be connected. Make sure to leave plenty of room for the arm hole. Count around how many rows up from the bottom you want to connect. Turn inside out and attach new yarn or use a tail to connect sides that same way as the shoulders.
SLEEVES:
Slip knot, insert at bottom of arm hole and pull through. Ch 1, HDC in each spot around the arm hole including where you first inserted the slip knot once you have gone all the way around. SS into the first chain to join.
Ch 1 and turn, HDC into each stitch. Repeat above process until sleeve is desired length.
INNER RIBBING: (for if there is a large gap in the front)
Try cardigan on stuffed animal and add a stitch marker to where you want the inner ribbing to taper off.
Insert a slip knot at the bottom row of the inner edge. DC into each stitch until you are three stitches away from the stitch marker. In first stitch do a HDC, in second stitch do a SC, and in third stitch do a SS. Remove stitch marker and do one more SS into the next one.
Ch 1 and turn. Into next stitch do a SC, next do a HDC, next do a DC into each remaining stitch. This can be repeated to make the inner ribbing wider. Fasten off.
BOTTOM RIBBING: (can be added if cardigan is too short)
Insert slip stitch in bottom row of inner ribbing. DC into each stitch around base of cardigan until you reach the other side. Can ch 1 and go back the other way more times for added length. Fasten off.
Weave in your ends and you’re done!
