Learn how to crochet this carnation flower in this tutorial video. Hi I'm Donna Wolfe from Naztazia. In this video I show how to crochet a carnation flower, which you can use in a vase or in a wedding bouquet. These work up fast and easy. I'm using a G 4 mm crochet hook and DK weight yarn.

I have a dumb question…if I want to make it like a mini carnation, should I skip some rows but end it with the same row as the original or should I just make less stitches in the beginning? I wanted to try to make a pin with a carnation but a little smaller 🙁

The easiest way to make it smaller is use a thinner crochet thread or even embroidery floss with a smaller hook. This way you can use the same pattern yet have it come out smaller.

If I may ask how long is the floral wire? We don’t have the same wire brand in our country and I found out that there are a lot of lengths to this.

The one I'm using in the video is 18 in / 45.7 cm in length. And then I bend the wire in half to get a stem length of about 9 in / 22.8 cm. It's also 20 gauge wire (thickness). However, feel free to use whatever sizes you prefer.

It's supposed to curl. That's what creates the layers in the flower.

On my 2nd attempt, I tried starting with 8 instead of 15 and using single stich instead of dc. I manage to get a smaller version, not as tiring and build time is very much shorter..

Yes, it is the same process. Ppl use ch circle cuz they think it is easier, I used magic circle. Whatever works for u! ☺️

Use a thinner yarn like a sport weight or fine yarn. Another option is to use crochet thread in size 3. All of those yarns with a smaller hook will make the flower smaller.

This is a really good and beginner friendly tutorial. You show exactly what you do and explain it point on without any unnecessary things around. I have adhd and love crafting, but often I have a hard time following what people do cause they have messy backgrounds or talk to much or just assume I know what to do while watching them.... but your tutorial is great. I will crochet carnations for mother's day this year!

Are you referring to 2:45 in the video? It says to "fasten off your work," which means to trim the yarn and make one last yarn over and pull through.

I generally use a thinner yarn and smaller crochet hook if I want the carnation to be smaller. Any alterations to the pattern might not produce the correct results.

As a suggestion for the future, is there any way you can possibly make a vase to put these beautiful flowers in? Maybe one between 7 to 12 inches tall and 6 or so inches wide, and one that has a taller, narrower neck? I can't find a decent pattern for really any vase around that size. Thank you again!

Can I ask why you’re chaining and slip stitching to start circles instead of using the magic circle? Would there be a difference if I just made a magic circle instead?

The purpose of a magic ring is to create a tighter center that has no hole in the middle. It works nicely with 6 to 10 stitches. When you have 15 double crochet for the initial round, the magic ring becomes a bit useless, as it will either eventually break open because of so many stitches, or, it won't have a tight center and you'll have a hole anyway. Since you don't see the center of the flower in the end product, the normal chain and slip stitch are a more secure option.

hi i just want to know how long your wire is? i sAw 18 inches but when i fold it it'll leave me with 9 inches and i like yours which is long. and the thickness of your wire too please :) thank you!

I used the 18" wire, folded to get a 9" stem. Videos sometimes distort sizes a bit, which might make mine seem longer than that perhaps? It's 20 gauge (thickness) wire.
