Want to learn how to crochet gloves with thumbs? These easy but oh-so-cute fingerless gloves with thumbs are crocheted with 8 ply, DK, or light-worsted yarn - so they're lovely and warm but not overly bulky so you can use your hands. The cosy ribbed band looks great and makes them extra comfortable, as the band slips easily over your hand but sits snugly around your wrist and keeps you warm without being too tight.
Whether you call them wrist warmers, wristers, or fingerless mittens, these fabulous little accessories are far easier to crochet than you might think. My crochet gloves with thumbs are definitely an easy pattern and I work slowly and carefully, explaining each step, so YOU can make fingerless gloves with thumbs!
This is a pattern for women's hands or older children, for large men's hands or small children's hands the thumb gap will need to be amended. If you're looking for a pattern for children or men, let me know - it's on my long list of things to do, and I'll make sure I get the video up sooner!
If these gloves are a little too tricky, try my fingerless gloves for absolute beginners, it is genuinely the easiest pattern I could come up with: • How to Crochet Easy Fi...
If you love to crochet with 8 ply yarn (or DK yarn or light worsted) check out my playlist of free crochet patterns - it's a work in progress and is always growing: • 8 Ply Crochet Patterns...
I use standing stitches to attach my yarn and invisible joins to finish when I tie off, if you want to learn either of those techniques, check out this playlist (standing puff stitches are definitely worth learning): • Useful Crochet Techniques
For my gloves, I used 4 Seasons Marvel 100% acrylic 8 ply, 30 grams or 85 metres/93 yards of yarn.

Hey Wheelie! I’m so happy I found this pattern! You have no idea how hard it is to find a fingerless glove pattern with thumbs!! This pattern was pretty easy, and being a bit more experienced, I added a few adjustments to my liking! I hope you don’t mind! Instead of beginning with a chain and working into the back of the chain, I started with a foundation HDC which works up faster and gives us a bit more stretch! I also added an invisible decrease to the second row of the thumb since I like my thumbs a little more snug fitting. These gloves are super comfy though! Keep it up and God bless you in the talents He gave you!

Hi Micah - Thank you ☺️ I’m really pleased to hear about the changes you made - it’s a great idea to start with foundation half double crochet, you avoid any risk of having a tighter bit in your glove from the starting chain! Using an invisible decrease in the thumb is clever too, I use them in toy making but hadn’t really thought of taking that over to gloves, I tend to just use standard decreases (hm… I’m definitely going to borrow your idea for future patterns 😉) and I’m really pleased you were able to make changes to the pattern so the gloves fit well. I know what you mean about finding glove patterns with thumbs, when I was learning all I saw were patterns without thumbs, I felt like such a pro crocheter when I made my first pair with thumbs 😊 You may (or may not, given you’ve just made a pair of gloves!) like to keep an eye out over the next week or so as I just finished filming a different pattern for fingerless gloves with thumbs. It uses single crochet rather than HDC and a slightly different technique to create the thumb gap. It also has stripes! I do have a lot of glove patterns and I’m always intending to film them, but I got very distracted by making stockings at Christmas, and I recently discovered I love crocheting toys…so the gloves keep getting put on the ‘film it later’ pile. At least there is one new pattern that I can definitely say will be up very soon! Thank you for leaving me such a lovely message, it is so nice to hear that someone has had success making my glove pattern. You’ve brightened my day. I hope you have a good day too 😃 Wheelie 👩🏻‍🦼🧶

Dearest Wheelie, I just discovered your channel and was completely amazed. I was looking for a glove pattern in 8 ply yarn to crochet as donations for Kogo. I was shocked to hear a familiar accent and my eyes fell out of my head as I had exactly the same yarn in my hands, while looking for a suitable pattern. It is so rare to see tutorials with locally available affordable yarn, this is so so refreshing. I crocheted like a crazy person during our lockdowns and so happy to see your channel. You are a beautiful presenter, the quality of your content is excellent, and thank you for demonstrating some great techniques in this tutorial. I am looking forward to trying the puff stich slouchy once I have finished the matching glove - I went up to a 4.5mm hook for the main part and back down to a 4mm hook for the ribbing and I hope to share photos soon. With love and gratitude xx

Hi Debra, thank you so much for your lovely comment, you made me smile! I’m delighted you happened on my video just at the right moment and extra pleased that you’re using it to make gloves to donate to Kogo ❤️ It is such a great feeling, to know a pattern I worked so hard on and shared free, you’re now using to make gloves to donate 🥰 The info I get from RU-vid tells me that only a small percentage of the people who watch my videos live in Australia. While I love that I get to meet people from all over the world, I’m always extra pleased when I get a comment like yours, because I started making these videos for exactly the reasons you gave - it is *so hard* to find a pattern video that uses yarn you can actually buy in Australia… without paying $$$$. I remember how hard it was when I was learning to crochet, sifting through all of the videos, looking for just one pattern that didn’t use worsted weight yarn - let alone the dream of finding someone crocheting with a yarn I recognised😱 Thanks again for taking the time to leave me such a thoughtful comment. I look forward to seeing your finished gloves, I really hope the pattern works well for you. If you ever find yourself hunting RU-vid for something specific, feel free to drop me a message - I have quite a backlog of patterns that I’m intending to make videos for and I’m always happy to move a pattern to the front of the queue if I know there’s someone interested. Have a lovely week! 👩🏻‍🦼Wheelie

I’m not sure how I missed your comment, I’m sorry! Particularly because this is one of the nicest comments I’ve ever received ❤️ I know some people just aren’t fond of Australian accents, so it’s really nice to know there’s a flip side and some folk are finding my voice calming 🥰 When I edit the voice overs for my videos, I sometimes drift off… there’s something about ‘yarn over’ said repeatedly that is very calming to me 😴😉 All the best 👩🏻‍🦼 Wheelie

This glove pattern will be really helpful to me because I am paraplegic and I need a wheelchair when I'm outside but my wheels always scrape my thumbs and cause them to bleed scar. this glove pattern will prevent that, as well as not restricting my grip because they are fingerless. amazing job!!
@wheeliemadeitcrochet
@wheeliemadeitcrochet Год назад
Hi 😃 I completely know what you mean!! My thumbs used to get so sore from my wheels 😖 (and the only reason they ‘used to’ and not so much now is I use a motorised wheelchair more often now 😉). I really hope your new gloves will help you! I’ve been thinking of making myself a custom pair with a full glove thumb and fingerless mitts like this glove for the finger part (if that makes sense!), I’m hoping that will help even more than just these fingerless mitts. I always find my thumb is the sorest bit and it doesn’t get protected by this style of glove - though this style of glove definitely helps. Let me know how you go with yours! I really hope you’ll have less-sore thumbs very soon 👩🏻‍🦼Wheelie

I keep finding myself "holding my tongue just right" to get the back bump. Of course it doesn't help. I keep telling myself I'm going to "get" this technique someday. I hope today is it because the color I've chosen will go well with what I'm wearing to a special event tomorrow.

@wheeliemadeitcrochet
@wheeliemadeitcrochet Год назад
Hi there 😊 thanks, I’m glad you like them! This is going to be a bit of a long reply, I hope you have a free hour to read a novel! 😂 The short answer is yes, I would love to make a video for larger sized gloves… the slightly longer and more honest answer is that it will take me several months to make the video, I have other videos already in the works to finish first. I doubt you want to wait that long to start your gloves, so in the meantime I think you should be able to use this video/pattern as a base and I’m happy to walk you through the changes you might need to make so the gloves fit well. It’s been a while since I made this video but I think that parts of this pattern should just scale up, definitely the first few steps will be fine. You can make the band fit your/their wrists exactly as shown. The ‘hand’ section of the glove should be ok too, but you may need to +1 increase stitch more (in the rounds where the pattern says to add increases) if your/their hand widens out more. When you come to creating the thumb gap, you will need to add a chain 1 (or 2 or 3, whatever your/their hands need) between the 2 double crochets on either side of the gap, to create a larger hole for the thumb. The thumb you should be able to create exactly as the video explains. I find that gloves often need a bit of experimentation when you’re making them to fit a specific person, I know I always end up doing a lot of writing down stitch counts and then unpicking and trying again because they’re too small or too big, so if that happens to you, try not to be discouraged, it’s not just you I promise! Are you on instagram by any chance? If you want to try making these gloves (if all that doesn’t sound waaaaay too hard) you could send me a message there and we can have a chat while you make them. I can take photos or make simple videos to explain what I’m talking about if you’re more a visual learner. You’d be doing me a favour at the same time - the men in my life are not willing to wear crocheted gloves, so I have only made a few pairs in larger sizes. It would be good to see if there are any tweaks that I haven’t thought of before I make a pattern video. Let me know what you think - I will completely understand if your response is ‘I’ll look for a video elsewhere’ 😂👩🏻‍🦼 Wheelie

Hi Lucila - thank you for letting me know, and an extra thanks for doing it so kindly. You must be so frustrated right now, it’s awful having to frog a project 😔. I think you’re right. I spent so long on this pattern that I got caught up in perfecting it and didn’t focus on what is easy when you’re learning to crochet. There’s a big difference between ‘easy for someone who’s experienced’ and ‘beginner friendly’. I’m going to go look at my other videos now and make sure I haven’t done the same with any of the others. You’ll see I’ve taken the word ‘beginner’ out of the title of the video now, so hopefully other beginners aren’t going to end up wanting to throw their yarn at me. Again, I’m very grateful you let me know, and even more so that you did it kindly. I know at some point I’m going to get a nasty response on RU-vid but I’m not looking forward to that day. I like to believe that crocheters are just more kind than the general population 😇🧶 Wheelie I don’t know if you’d want to risk one of my patterns again, but my other glove pattern is genuinely a beginner pattern. It’s not as exciting, but the button on the wrist makes it look cute (I still wear my pairs) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-R84tAp3fc6I.html

Are you putting a stitch in the same stitch where you do the chain 2? Also, I speak English so it seems you did not complete the double crochet when turning around the thumb the first time but did a decrease across 2/stitches?
@wheeliemadeitcrochet
@wheeliemadeitcrochet 7 месяцев назад
14:15 Hi Debra, just checking that I’m looking at the right spot in the pattern - the beginning of round 7? The round starts with a chain 2 to get up to height, then a double crochet worked in the same stitch (the stitch you slip stitched to, to finish round 6). The thumb gap is created by skipping 6 stitches and double crocheting. I don’t use a decrease in this round, but in the video I have yarned over already when I’m counting the skipped stitches, which might make it look like there’s a half finished double crochet on my hook. I hope that helps - but if I’ve misunderstood which part of the pattern you’re asking about, please do ask again 😊 Wheelie

@@fatimahbholat5493 Aw thanks 😊 I just love the chance to talk about crochet… I love my family dearly but they think yarn is very dull 😂 The fluffy gloves/faux fur coat sounds like such a cute combo, one of my favourite things about crocheting is being able to make something that matches an outfit 😊 I’ve looked at the yarns you’re thinking of and I have a few questions about what you’d like your gloves to look like (thumbs/no thumbs) and if you’re sure you want to use such thick yarn (I usually go for DK for gloves so I can use my hands, but it’s not very cold here, so you might be right to choose heavier yarn), how confident a crocheter you are, and if you can read patterns. But I’m hoping you might be on Instagram so we can chat there. It would be a lot quicker/easier for me. RU-vid isn’t very reliable with notifications for some reason, I often miss the replies to comments unless I come back and check, which makes it hard to have a conversation 🙄 But if you’re not on instagram that’s ok too - I just thought I’d check before writing out a massive long comment here 😊 Wheelie

Is there a particular reason that you're not crocheting in spirals? 🙃
@wheeliemadeitcrochet
@wheeliemadeitcrochet Год назад
The short answer is ‘yes’ - but it’s basically personal taste 🙂 I’ve found that working in a spiral has some advantages but for me, with this pair of gloves, the disadvantages outweigh them. I don’t like the little gap you get at the start of round 2 and I don’t like that the glove doesn’t finish looking perfectly straight at the top. Also, the method I’ve used in this pattern for creating the thumb gap, I don’t think it’s a good match for working in a continuous round. There are ways to get around those things, but it would be a different glove pattern. You could definitely do some experimenting and work in a continuous round if that is a technique you want to use (I know I love it for beanies and for amigurumi - who doesn’t like to avoid a seam where they can?) but I think you’d need to make some other little changes along the way 😊👩🏻‍🦼Wheelie
