How to cross patch sequencers and create dynamic sounds and melodies

Hands on modular sequencers are a lot of fun. However, simple 8 step sequences can get repetitive very fast. Using two simple sequencers and the cross patch trick, you can easily make more dynamic and interesting sounds and melodies. In this video I explain how that works, of course with a lot of patch ideas and sound examples.

Hello everyone! With a lot of eyes towards upcoming Superbooth 2023 I thought I'd make a relaxed video with a simple sequencer trick :) Generic Affiliate links: Perfect Circuit - US - bit.ly/3Yn0Gll Sound of You - EU bit.ly/3DzdFYi Clockface - AS - bit.ly/3YkDJ1B

@@MonotrailTechTalk I tried to make a patch like this but I have a question. How do you set your sequencers so that they play notes of the same scale? Do you have to set each note so they fit in a certain scale? Or do you set each sequencer to a scale?

@@MonotrailTechTalk super fun! I'm using Voltage Modular, and only recently, after 5 or so years, moved on from the 8 step sequencer (mainly because it doesn't have a gate jack for each step - I've been duplicating and syncing seq's to get a gate for just 1 step) One thing that I like is to use a copy of an 8 step seq as a clock, with a few gates disabled, to give what I call a "drunken clock" to other modules. What I don't do is modulate modules - I usually just add more modules rather than modulate. You've got some wonderful sounds with all your modulation (8:08) - wonderful results when you're 3 layers deep, modulating your modulation! Thanks so much!

Great video again! I like the transposed cross-sequence a lot. How did you manage that the transposed second sequence stays in the same key and the sequenced harmonies are not just blindly transposed up or down?
@MonotrailTechTalk
@MonotrailTechTalk Год назад
Ah, you found the flaw in my video! Realized this after editing and uploading the whole thing. Both sequencers have a great implementation of 'transpose' which isn't actually transposing. I forgot to explain that properly. Bloom 'shifts up' the sequence within the scale. And Moskwa adjust the range of the sequence, instead of transposing. So to be fair, I should have called that chapter different!

What is opening the VCA in your patches? Since it is not shown in the diagrams I tried to trace the cables, but I figured it would be easier to just ask :) Lovely video as always! I really like to be shown new ideas that can be universally applied to most decently configured racks! Greetings from Germany
@MonotrailTechTalk
@MonotrailTechTalk Год назад
Nothing! I wanted to include the VCA in my patches to make them complete and more beginner friendly. I do use the VCAs to set the level before sending a signal to my outboard mixer (and that's good practice). But in all patches where there is no modulation to the 'end of voice' VCA, there is no modulation, you can just as well leave it out if you are sure your outboard mixer and or audio interface can handle eurorack levels. all the dynamics come form modulating the filter.
@MrJemabaris
@MrJemabaris Год назад
@@MonotrailTechTalk Thanks for clarifying! Although I believe going from a VCA straight into your mixer/interface by just reducing how hot the signal is, is also not best practice. Ideally there should be an active circuit converting the signal from Eurorack to line level (in the form of an output module) so that not just the levels but also the impedances match. Of course it's not absolutely necessary but I believe it's the "correct" way of doing it. Cheers

I like this one too! do you have any ideas for effects that alter the 1v/o signal - obvious one is arpeggio but what else can you do with pitch signal?
@russ254
@russ254 Год назад
my biggest growth in thinking has been realizing that it's not a pitch signal - it's a signal that can be sent to any other module for any other purpose. you can ring mod it, send to mod effects, SEND IT THOUGH EFFECTS, bernoulli it, trigger a function generator like maths or pam, transpose to a different key with dc offset, send to logic module, rectify, attenuate, pitch shifter, frequency shifter. . .
@MonotrailTechTalk
@MonotrailTechTalk Год назад
Russ254 is totally right, the 1v/oct is just another signal. I referred to my video on the Beatstep Pro, but realized I forgot to mention why :) In that video I use both the 1v/oct signal and gate for quite a number of things. As modulation source, but indeed you can modulate it like any other signal, although it will easily lose it's 1v/oct precision.
@russ254
@russ254 Год назад
here’s something easy that I just thought of. . . . send it through an inverter (maybe also dc offset to transpose higher or lower) then a quantiser to get back in key with the original, send to second voice
@LeonTrimble
@LeonTrimble Год назад
@@MonotrailTechTalk yeah i'm asking specifically about precise tools for modulating the 1v/o signal - what tools are out there and what can you use - precision adders are one thing obvs...
@MonotrailTechTalk
@MonotrailTechTalk Год назад
Ah I see. One I know of, but think it's discontinued, is the Frequency central Trans Europa. Good for octave switching, transposing, etc. But tbh, when you like messing with these kind of things I think it's best to switch it around and use a quantizer. Then you have all the freedom to create interesting signals with sequencers, envelopes, LFOs or anything you like, and then quantize it at the end.
@JacobSkriver
@JacobSkriver Год назад
Nice patches as always. But I am confused here: couldn't these patches have been built just using both channels on the Bloom itself?
@MonotrailTechTalk
@MonotrailTechTalk Год назад
Thanks! I wanted to show the idea of cross patching 2 basic sequencers, and make it visually clear which is which. But indeed Bloom is a 2 in 1 and can do almost all of these by itself :)
