When Justin Raines said that he spent a year on his double thumb technique before he went public, he served up a big dose of perspective on the difference between being able to play a few licks and really have a clean technique.

Justin is not only one of the most skilled, gifted, and knowledgeable bassists(and drummers) in the business who has mastered his craft, but he's also an intelligent, humble, and chill dude!!! Everything he plays is a bass masterclass and he's a masterclass of playing fills without overplaying and being a distraction! He reminds me of the late great Aaron Spears who played some INSANE EXTRATERRESTRIAL drum fills and SOME HOW NEVER MISSED THE ONE!!! Yes, he plays some incredible basses but HE makes his basses SING!!! Thank you for an OUTSTANDING INTERVIEW!!! I'm inspired every time I see Justin play and hear him speak!!! Thank God for Justin Raines!!!

Absolutely man! Just wanna throw Matt Ramsey (Kirk Franklin’s bassist)if u didn’t know about him. That guy and Justin Raines are easily top 3 along with Sharay Reed in my opinion. Their playing styles are different but Matt is super melodic with his playing, picking and fills. Check him out if u haven’t!

I notices that he keeps his thumb anchored on the B string yet he keeps the other strings from ringing. I play like that too. (just not nearly as well). Is he using the right hand pinky and the ring finger to mute? I have not been able to make that work, and the floating thumb technique throws me off too.
@KeithCopeland778
@KeithCopeland778 2 месяца назад
@@gimmeagig When I switched from 4-string to 5 and 6-string bass, it took me a while and a lot of practice to adjust to the floating thumb technique. It's automatic now even when I play a 4-string. It takes putting in the work and patience.

Justin's MTD Saratoga always sounds so clean and well balanced no matter where he is on the neck. I know part of it is just his play-style, but not every bass signal comes out that even throughout the frequency range. Sounds killer!

Such a great perspective about the “no short cuts!” What most people don’t realize about all the professional musicians traveling is the thousands of hours of hard work and practicing and sacrifices they have made to be where they are and play how they play! People just want to know the secret but it’s hard work! Justin is so amazing and so nice!

What a great interview ! What I love is that when you listen to the really GREATS like Justin, they are always so humble, kind and down to earth. Plus you can feel what a great teacher he is through the way he is able to "simplify" things that look very complex. Justin's playing is so fluid and groovy... I see the similarity with Richard's fluidity. Man, I discovered Richard Bona during a small festival in France in 2002 or something. The miserable guitar player that I was was at the front row, Man, he blew my mind. He had it all: the groove, the technic. Plus he sings like a God. But I think I prefer Justin's playing because I think his playing his less "busy" than Richard's. Richard is really over the top sometimes ! Ian and Scott, you guys are great interviewers. I've been a member of SBL for nearly a year now and I've learnt so much thanks to you, even if I'm not the most consistent student outhere. I've praticed bass more in nearly a year than in the previous 13 years I played with my metal band as a self taught bass player. Keep up the great work all you and God Bless you Justin ! This is nuts! I’m planning on getting a fretless bass Ibanez srf706 that’s why I’ve been watching so many bass vids equipment vids… Anyway the weird part is because the bassist at my church plays an upright bass and I love that sound. So full circle ⭕️ here’s another example of a church bassist inspiring me to push the envelope try harder different techniques equipment… It’s a blessing. Thanks for this video! ❤

Justin is the one person who inspired my bass playing coz Israel Houghton is the one who has inspired the way I have understood music.

Thanks SBL for having JR come on and share. I totally enjoyed this interview. I learned a lot from & was inspired strongly by JR. I also learned that gospel cats are phenomenal contrary to what haters like to have us believe. To be honest many artists enjoying commercial success would look less than amazing, average even, on the gospel scene. For that; thank you JR for representing! 😂
