I recently made a gallery wall in my home of old family photos that I framed and matted myself. I received lots of requests for a tutorial on matting, so here it is!
In this video, I show how to use a Logan Mat Cutter and cut custom mats for photos and art.

Best instructional video for Logan mat cutters. Thank you so much. I've just bought a 350-1 Compact Elite cutter, and your video was very helpful. One thing occurred to me when you placed the old backboard into the newly matted frame. The old board is not acid free, so you could slip a piece of glassine paper between the old and the new boards to help preserve the new mat.

Thank you for such an awesome video. My husband has some old family slides from when he was a child growing up in Hawaii that I was wanting to have printed & use to make a 'family photo/mirror/antique tool wall' going up my stairs but the cost of matting was prohibitive. Now I can (after I get a mat cutter, that is. LOL) Thanks so much!

It's a clear plastic quilting ruler. You can find them at sewing/craft/fabric shops.

should I draw my art on 8 x 11 or 8 x 10 to fit on 11 x 14 mat?

Art and photos are best done 8 x 10, as that's the standard frame size. 8.5 x 11 is called "letter size," and is usually used for certificates and other documents. You'll find far fewer frame choices in 8.5 x 11.

I did cut a mat for several small photos, but I just sort of planned it out manually. I don't have a good system for that!

When your measuring for the glass it would be measured from the rear inside the rebate also she makes out that you do all your measuring lines on the rear to keep the good side of the mat clean but you have to do all your measuring lines on the rear otherwise you wouldn't get your bevel the right way, i wouldnt bother with this video plus her voice is irritating.
