I'm a communication design student in the 5th semester. And honestly I really do learn a lot more about design from your videos than I did in my entire degree. You're such a great inspiration. THANK YOU SO MUCH!! And pls never stop doing what you do.
That's so true. Just discovering and watching this video now, but I swear, 2nd year in, I've been learning all the adobe programs better with RU-vid videos than from my professor.
I totally agree with you. Graduated from uni, but none of the professors taught us about all those tools and how to use them. Isn’t it kind of sad that they expect all their students to know these beforehand? like… they’re there to learn from scratch?…
I really don't know if thank you is a good enough word to use to express how much I appreciate your videos. Many persons have skills, but only few know how to teach others that skill.
Thank you for the free trial of Skillshare, Abi!! 😍 Love from Paris! 😇🇲🇫 Also very nice to actually learn more about Illustrator tools, I've started using the pen tool last week because of one of your videos and ooooh myyyyyyyy 🤩🤩
My pleasure!! Such a great platform to learn from☺️ yay I’m glad you were able to learn about some more tools!! You need to try the curvature tool it’s a life changer!
I watched ur video and trying to learn and apply same. But not working. I am doing it on window i dont find command key. Also with eraser +space not working please help i really need eraser + space features
Abi, you are amazing like all your videos, Specially I like your expression while watching videos, It is so charming & energetic, Thank you so much for all your videos, I'm always looking for your new video...
Hi, the pencil doesn't work for me :( Its creating like a black snake instead of filling the letter with black, and if I complete the path of the pencil to fill it with black, it will fill it in black in the white parts but white in the black parts
I'm just starting and your videos give me so much inspiration and knowledge. Trying to figure out fonts and all the license stuff so I have a question about Envato Elements that you always advertise. If one has a subscription does it mean they can download fonts and use it in any project without additional pay?
Glad you’ve been enjoying the videos! So if you have an envato account you hold the license for any of the fonts downloaded and do not need to pay anything extra. Your client will also need a license to be able to use the font and i find most of the fonts are available to buy on creative market (singularly) or on other font websites.
Having trouble with the Pencil Tool section. No matter what I do, the letters don't change like yours do. Also my eraser tool doesn't make shapes with the space bar. Any tips? Thanks!
hey abi, sorry can i ask you are you doing this on the 22 illustrator or the 23? since im still at the 2020 illustrator, and i dont think i can see some of the tools that youre using here nor your shorts, thanks !
Hey!, i love the tone and mood of the tutorial, but can anyone tell me why my stuff isnt working like hers? :( the pencil tool just leaves a path and when i tried to use the eraser tool and pressed space i just move the whole canvas.
You need to adjust your pencil tool settings, I have an in-depth video on the tool here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ows4mzaD0hY.html
Hey Abi, or if anyone can answer my question that’d be great, for some reason when I use my pencil tool to do that wavy thing on the font, it doesn’t work? Am I missing something?
Pencil tool is a tricky one sometimes, I have a video dedicated to it here that should help: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ows4mzaD0hY.html hopefully that's of help, if not I actually have a course coming out all on the tool soon!!
NOT WORKING am I missing out on something? Guys please help... I tried opening anchors by clicking control+shift+O it opens my graphics card% display layout!
Loved it! I'm about to start working on type manipulation for a client so this came at a great time lol. I usually gravitate towards the blob brush tool instead of the pencil tool when making customizations
have you used the 2022 ver of ai? did the pencil tool change? because i've always used this way as well and on this version i can't anymore and i don't know if it's me or they changed it...
Yes I do, but my pencil tool works the same, how strange? I have an updates version of the video coming soon along with some handy Illustrator tools, so hopefully that can help!
Abi is the sweetest person in the whole wide world ❤️ Her attitude just inspires me and I always see a smile on her face. Love your videos and never forget how proud of you I am 🥺💫
When I outline the letters and try to select anchor points using the direct selection tool it moves the whole letter. It does not allow me to adjust the anchor points. Can you tell me why? Thank you so much!
Are you sure you are using the direct selection tool and not just the selection tool? If you are, try double clicking into the grouped work and then selecting one letter, then see if you can move anchor points. Sorry this is a bit hard to explain over a comment, but I have an updated video on this coming soon, so will be sure to go over it 😊
Yes this can depend on the settings, try this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ows4mzaD0hY.html and if you want even more help with the pencil tool I actually have a course dedicated to it here; www.abiconnick.co.uk/pencil-tool-course 😊
Omg abi I'm soo glad for this video and your tips. There's alot I didn't know I could do in illustrator I'm trying get better with my typeface. Please do more videos like this in logo and branding design 😊
As boring as it sounds practice, it can be a really tricky tool to get used to using but it's really beneficial! Have a video on it here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ows4mzaD0hY.html
Every time I try to use the pencil tool like that, it doesn't work for me. I make sure that the fill is black but then when I create whatever line, the fill goes blank.
Ok, but what should you do when you have to customaze a sans serif font but at the same time keep it looking clean and neat and not cartoonish? It's hard.
I just got illustrator today and command shift o don’t create anchor point for me and direct selection tool moves all the text not what it’s doing for you, any ideas on what I’m doing wrong?
This is odd, maybe check you're keyboard shortcuts, it most likely moves all the text because it's grouped, It's difficult to explain over a comment, but I am planning on bring out another video like this where all keyboard commands will be on screen to follow. The best piece of advice I can give is just be patient and spend time messing around in Illustrator, I know at the start it's such an overwhelming program, but the more you familiarise yourself with it, the better you'll get 😊
@@abiconnick thank you so much! I figured it out for some reason the anchor points just didn’t show up but the shortcut worked and i was able to complete my first logo with your help!! I have been a photoshop girl for the last 10 years but want to start doing graphic design full time so your videos are the bestttttt
Can you do an video where you present your most useful shortcuts you found out about Illustrator? The eraser with the space bar would not be the last one that is pretty useful, but literally nobody knows😅🙌
Ooh that's strange. Take a look at your pencil settings (double click the pencil tool) and play with the options. I think if you click 'fill new pencil strokes' that might help!
I need to buy a shawl for my mom and that's why I'm savings my money......I had a lot of things that I want to do so ...... As I'm growing I feel so frustrated why I can't make money so easily It hurts sometimes Best of luck everyone.....And Do you think it's possible for me to be a graphic designer just a finest one :)
I tried following what you did, but for some reason it wouldn't let me move the anchor point. And when I did get it to move, it wasn't smooth, it jumped around too much. Is there some setting you have on yours that allows you to do what you did or am I doing something wrong?
For the anchor point to move, you need to select it with the direct selection tool then drag it independently from everything else. For the jumping around, that could be a couple of things. Is your canvas too small? Do you have "Snap to grid" on? Is "snap to pixels" on?
Thank you for your creativity . When you customise a font, do you own the rights to it? Or do you still have to pay to use it? Can you save each letter and then write it as a new font? Regards
Hi how are things! Greetings from Argentina. I saw it more than 10 times to the part of the pencil. I can't manage to achieve the same use you give it in the "Pencil Tool" minute. What am I doing wrong?
Hi! Appreciate the support!! The pencil tool can be really tricky, that's why I made a dedicated video on it here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ows4mzaD0hY.html also has a free exercise sheet for you to download and get better at using it! Hope it helps 😊
Ive been watching your videos and i've always wondered what tools you were using to achieve your ideas. This video is a godsend because this answers all my questions so thank you :)
But it can also cause legal issues if the font licence forbids customizing and using that for commercial. I recommend to always read the licence before
Do you mean the pencil tool? You have to make sure you pick up the anchor point when running the tool over the shape! It can be tricky to get right so keep giving it a go☺️
If it’s not in your tools panel you may need to add it! There should be a more options or 3 lines on the panel that you can click on and it will take you to more tools! Then just drag the smooth tool into your tools panel☺️
Maybe try adjusting the settings of it, it can be tricky to get the hang of, but when you do, it's game changing! I have actually just realised a in-depth course all on the pencil tool if you're interested: www.abiconnick.co.uk/pencil-tool-course
Pencil tool can be so tricky at times! But I have a dedicated video on it here that might help: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ows4mzaD0hY.html also a free downloadable practice sheet on my website 😊
Can be a really tricky tool to get the hand of! I have a dedicated video on it here that should help: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ows4mzaD0hY.html
I am learning how to do this now. After you customize a font do you send the client the original font file still? Also do they have to purchase a separate font license even if its customized? Or do you just send them the customized version of the font in outlines?
Hope the video has helped! So I actually never tweak or change the original font as this was created by someone else and font creation isn't my forte. You just have to make sure the fonts you are supplying compliment the logos you have designed. I always supply my clients with 3 complimentary fonts. One that can be used for headings, one for subheadings and another for body copy. These all compliment the original logo and one another too. The client will have to purchase their own license for the font. Hope that helps x
Thank you for this video! I somehow can't get the pencil tool to work correctly. It doesn't change the existing path; it just creates a new one. I really don't know what I'm doing wrong. Someone help?
No problem, glad I could help! Pencil tool can be really tricky to get the hand of, that's why I made a dedicated video on it here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ows4mzaD0hY.html also has free practice sheets you can download to get better! Hope it helps 😊
Abi you are amazing!!!! I would never ever be able to learn design essentials by myself if you didn't do these videos! I am learning so so much!!!! Thank you!! I am studying e-learning at university and I want to learn how to design everything (like icons) for e-learning-programs by myself. I Think it's a huge plus when you are able to design everything beautifully.
Hi! As I followed a recommendation I modified the letters of a font I got, however, how do you apply these changes to the communication such as the website typography? Theoretically, the letters should be also modified as we did it in the logo, but I don't know how professionals work with it? Did you have such a problem? I am not sure what to do because I am building a website design for this brand and now logo letters and a typeface I wanted to use for headings look very different.
