NOTE: Make sure you know what has been in the Drum if its had Aviation Fuel or any Flammable liquids do not cut it!
My Drum that i sued in the video had Glucose in it so it was very safe to cut. Can be Very Dangerous and highly Flammable still!
For more information on the drum planter go to www.ecocrowd.co...

Before you do this, make damn sure the old contents of the drum were not flammable. Vapors can be just as explosive as the former contents, and guys have gotten killed cutting into "empty" drums that exploded. Filling the drum with water will displace explosive vapors.

Great video! What size angle grinder did you use 4.5” or 5” . Just want to know if my 4.5” cordless Ridgid would do the job

I have cut my drum as per your video BUT the top edges of each are razor sharp with metal burrs - how do I make the freshly cut rims safe? Paul

G'day Paul, you can use a grinding disc to smooth the edges.

Every 200mm cut down 10mm vertically with your grinder from the top lip of the freshly cut drum. Then use folding pliers to fold the cut sections over towards the outside of the drum, making a curled lip. The 200mm and 10mm are just a guess so you might need to adjust those measurements a bit to make it work.

Hey mate if mine had flammable liquid could I potentially fill with water and the oxygen out of it?

Daniel Jones Gday mate. For ones that had flammable liquid i would normally try to dry it out then put some water and detergent in and roll it aroud a bit and then dry it out. That should be fine. Be very careful though especially if its had aviator fuel in it!

I have cut 44s and lpg tanks simply by 1/4 filling with water and detergent, sloshing it around, empty and then refill it completely with water. Then I made the cuts using a cordless angle grinder. My theeory was there was so much water in the vessel that the weight would prevent it from becoming a projectile if it flared. I have also completely filled it and from a distance put a flame over the opening and if there was any residue it would burn off but that didn't even happen. Ive done two 44s and two lpg tanks and to date havent had an issue. It also helps if you can get food grade 44s as an extra prescaution

once I was cutting with the angle grinder, it exploded and my facial hair was crisp, and my hair was all straigtened out and stiff, gave me good hand and face burn for a week though...never again using angle grinder, directly. I use nibbler now and it leave smooth finish if u cut in a perfect line, with or without flushing the drums.

That's why they have a guard and if they are properly used , what you are describing cannot happen, in addition you may have been applying to much force to the cutting disc

What was in the drum? If petrol, and without cleaning/washing a spark will create a huge explosion, almost certainly killing the operator.
