Very very nice idea. Tires are better garden pots than that of clay or cement. Easier to move from one place another. More from cracking and effect of inclement weather. I'll do it myself.

You can line the tires with plastic (we use large sheet plastic for greenhouses from the hardware store and burlap. We use lined tires. Works great. And you have to cut the tops off so you have more growing space on the top instead of just dead space underneath the rim. Great video and suggestion. Thanks :)

That's great procedure to cut tyre.But If you have Jigsaw.it so easy.If no electrical your procedure is the best way.

I like the video. You can use a wooden broom to guide your cutting. Best one yet!

We did this years ago but we had the rims still on. Cut them the same way and than flipped the bigger portion inside out and the piece you would throw out that way would stay on the rim for more support and than you have a raised flower planter

Cut with a vibrating saw sharpened with a knife edge. Then turn inside out. Looks better and holds more dirt.

I use them in my rooftop garden,growing passion fruit, potatoes and corn to name a few.

Lady, I nominate you for the Nobel Peace Prize!! This is genius. I tried using a grinder with a cutting blade, my husband tried using one with the wrong blade (smoked the tire) and it shattered. I tried using a Rockwell Sonicrafter, a jig saw and finally gave up and googled it and found THIS video!! I used a drill to drill 3 holes to start using an exacto knife (a little oil helps), but the pry bar/rod technique opened up the cut and I split off 4 sidewalls in the time I spent trying to figure it out the hard way.

Great Video! Keeping the knife blade wet with oil or water will reduce the friction between the rubber and the knife blade, making the task much easier.

You can also use a simple utility knife and if you wet the rubber tire slightly as you cut, the rubber does cut much more smoothly. Good idea. Also, if you insert mesh wire inside the tire before filling with soil, it will keep burrowing animals out of the plant, but the roots will grow through the mesh.

Yes, anyone who has cut up a tire or two knows that any tool that creates heat (any power tool) doesn't always make the job easier (same for cutting plexi and other plastics as well). And that electricity or gasoline is not always handy for powering those tools. Thanks for the vid, a tire with sidewalls is a mosquito haven. cut 'em out!
