How to Cut Cricut Adhesive Foil - Without the Headache

Today I show you how to cut Cricut adhesive foil, without a headache. I am going to cut three different types of foil to show you the differences in how they cut. Some require multiple passes through the machine and this is something I show you as well. These steps can be used for either the Cricut Explore Air or the Cricut Maker.

Omg I’m still confused. I see that some people put the foil with the shine side on the back but the clear film on the front won’t allow the plastic to cut to the foil? What am I doing wrong?

This is foil vinyl, you use the fine point blade for it. The foil transfer kit is kind of like an embellishment tool. You don’t have to order that, it is seriously awesome though 🤗

It can be helpful also to cut leather more than once, especially if the blade is not new. Try to remember to sharpen blades with tin foil before cutting anything thick. It can save frustration.

great video. my question is: cricut website says you put the foil shiny side down to cut it with your machine. yet every video I see shows people doing the shiny side up? why is that?

Shiny side up! I don’t know why Cricut has it the other way, but the shiny side is the clear part, the full side is what’s being pushed into the blank so that the shiny foil shows when done

I cut a 12x12 sheet of my foil and from my experience the foils lift from the backing when you flatten it from being rolled up. Is there a way around this issue?

Hi there! If it is saying it can’t read the sensors that means you have it set to “print then cut” you have to switch it to just cut. It doesn’t matter which mat you use.

@@CraftingUnedited Yes there is! Atleast with the Cricut Maker. If you go into material settings, you can change the pressure and cut amounts! I just tried it and it worked beautiful. Your idea and tips got me there!

Thank you for the tips! I'm having trouble with sticking the foil (I have rose gold foil) on glass. I'm getting pointy bumps and other textures that are messing the vinyl up from behind. Do you have any tips for that? I clean the glass with alcohol and use brand new transfer tape. My mat isn't new. Could it be that? I've seriously done the same number (I'm doing table numbers) twice and still getting the texture issue. I tried using a heat gun lightly to try and get the texture out and that didn't work.

Hi there! So a couple of ideas here. Make sure the alcohol doesn't have any additives in it. Heat the surface just a little bit and make sure there are no fuzzies on the foil or the surface. The surface should be totally clean, I would avoid the heat gun on the foil directly as it can make it worse. Also try to apply in tiny sections using a scraper tool, this will help as well.

Flip the foil the other way. If it’s sticking to the mat then you have it upside down.

You have to make sure to not touch the mat at all. Just wait for it to finish and then hit go again. If this doesn’t work, start over and turn your machine off first.

Regular, strong grip is the devil lol. I don’t use that for anything but glitter and that’s a last resort as well. Standard grip will be great as long as it’s a fresh piece.

Any tipa for getting the foil to stick to the cutting mat? I have brand new mats but its not sticking to even the heavy sticky mat.

Ah yes, I had the same issue. They roll it so it makes it super difficult. I use painters tape when that happens, sometimes I’ll cut the size I’ll need them press it flat under a book or something heavy.

Great video! Quick question... when you're talking about NOT unloading your mat the first time but you say to hit "dismiss" first before you hit the "C" again... I think mine says "finish". Is that the same as dismiss? I appreciate you making this video ... SO much great advice! Thanks!!!!! 👍👍

Maria Peters thank you! Finish is not the same as dismiss. Finish will finish the cut and is in the bottom right corner, dismiss is in the top center of your screen when your mat is ready. That’s what you want to either ignore or select.

I have literally no trouble cutting the adhesive foil, but I cannot for the life of me get my tranfer tape to stick to that material. What do you use as your transfer tape for adhesive foil. I think I had the exact same grey you were using.

I just use contact paper from target, the shelf liner stuff. If I ever have an issue I try the Cricut strong grip. Contact paper is my go to though.

My problem with the foil is transferring it. Only duck tape worked

I use the strong grip transfer tape for it, never thought to use duck tape!

Yes! Its sooo frustrating! But if you cut it several times before unloading it from the machine it does make it a lot less horrible.

I haven’t experienced that issue but I also haven’t ever ordered that much at once. It shouldn’t come off the backing that easily though. Is it from Cricut?

Just bought the Maker... Tried a few things... Did a foil name 3 x's and I am ready to throw the whole set and through the "f-ing" window... Grrr

Foil is the toughest material to get, I had lots of issues with it before I finally got the hang of it! It is worth the headache once it’s over. Don’t give up, you will conquer your Cricut and learn to love it, I promise!
