The end result is beautiful. But one thing I find kind of disturbing is how much of the gem is polished away! I guess that s just how it goes with these kind of things.

hi what kind of disk do you use to make the gem shine? ... and what abrasives do you use to shine the gem? I hope your answer thanks
@VintageTimeGems
@VintageTimeGems 6 лет назад
I use 2 types of discs and polish to make the gems shine. In this video I have used a perspex disc with cerium oxide. In some of the later videos I have used a tin disc with diamond grit to polish the gem. Thanks for watching. Cheers.

Interesting, thank you.... I have 5 crystals (200g) and was seeing what was the go, might get out my diamond blades now... What is the resin to hold them on the stick? hot melt glue? Jim
@VintageTimeGems
@VintageTimeGems 6 лет назад
I use a 5 minute epoxy glue made in the US called DEVCON. Happy gem cutting.
@orgasmictomato
@orgasmictomato 6 лет назад
Thanks, sounds like Araldite rapid (5 minute) which I have will be similar. I notice a few people (on youtube vids.) use dop wax (which only shows up in USA ebay.???) I see this as only sealing wax (right or wrong) and do you not consider it a good enough hold for your faceting? As I would see it as. 1.- reusable. 2.- releases and cleans up quicker. Total newby here and as they say knowledge is power. Before I stuff up. thanks, Jim all advise is useful.
@VintageTimeGems
@VintageTimeGems 6 лет назад
Yes you can use the "Selleys Araldite" (two part). Don't buy cheap 2 part epoxies from a $2 shop. Not sure if the Selleys has more expensive stronger 5 minute epoxy. I never tried the wax. For larger stones not sure if it will hold. And it's damn messy and clogs up the dop sticks after heating. Let the 5 minute Araldite cure overnight. If used within 2 hours it may still flex. Three hours is the minimum. I buy devcon simply because it's cheaper to buy on Ebay and get it posted from the US to Australia. But the Selly's should be just as good. What type of faceting machine do you have ?
@orgasmictomato
@orgasmictomato 6 лет назад
I don't have a machine as yet, I am considering making one from a old washing machine I have just disassembled. It does have a variable speed motor and a fair flat belt/ pulley system and the Plastic drum is already fitted around the shaft etc. - could make a unit for manual use out of it. Do you know off-hand what speeds you use of the lap table rotation? I have no intention of getting into this on a permanent basis, just maybe a hobby (short term). Thanks. Jim

Hey what machines are used to grind gemstones specifically? whats good to start off with?
@VintageTimeGems
@VintageTimeGems 6 лет назад
Machines that grind gemstones are faceting machines. Usually it's best to buy a machine made in the country you live in. Your best as a beginner to join a gem club first and use theirs before you buy. Cheers

@VintageTimeGems
@VintageTimeGems 4 года назад
You can use wet and dry sand paper to polish gems. There are youtube videos that show you how. Cerium Oxide is a final polish. Often used to polish scratched out of car windscreens also.

Hi. The square pre-form was 12,5 carats and finally You have got 4,5 carats gem . The loss was not too much ?
@VintageTimeGems
@VintageTimeGems 6 лет назад
xerxes hadrianus It's a deep cut so you always lose a lot of weight. I always cut for brilliance. Most Thai or Indian faceters cut for weight resulting in a dead stone (no brilliance). They are really poorly gems. That's the dilemma do yo cut for weight or brilliance.
@joedeardo2855
@joedeardo2855 6 лет назад
Welcome to gem faciting. lol the bad part is you buy rough by the carrot weight! It always makes me mad performing a stone to get just the right color! I have started with a 45 ct.stone and ended up with 5 or 6 ct. finished! To cut out all the junk. That's why I love CZ. No crap to cut arround. If I buy 1000 ct.. Of CZ I can get a good 70% of finished gem weight if you plan it right.
