Good video. Great to see the child is interested and you are taking the time to give her some precious memories. She will no doubt think of you when she is older and feeding her family with home grown spuds. The potato is a tuber not a stem. The tuber has all the nutrients to give the new plants the essentials it needs in the first few weeks of its life. When you dig up the spuds you'll notice it is just the skin of the seed tuber that is left. I'd like to hear from anyone who has had a good crop from peelings as I have never tried it. I would think you would have to make sure the peels do not dry out before the plant is well established. Thanks and take care.
@ArthurDavidson
@ArthurDavidson 3 месяца назад
Thank you for your comments. Regarding potato peels, there would have to be enough of the tuber material behind the skin with an eye to sustain the cutting. Plus, there is the issue of fungus using wet peels as cuttings. I'm sure that some or most might make it.

Sweet video with your grand daughter! How long do you dry them for? I live in humid south Florida and wondered if I could use my dehydrator? It goes as low as 95 degrees. When dry, how do you plant them? Depth? Spacing? I'm new at this and want to try it but need more information. Thank you!
@ArthurDavidson
@ArthurDavidson 4 года назад
I lived in South Florida most of my life. It is difficult, but not impossible to grow potatoes in S. Florida. The problem is the sandy soil is full of a microscopic worms called nematodes. The nematodes will attack the tubers and destroy them. Most of Florida has sandy soil which is why these worms proliferate. There is never enough organic matter in the soil to deter these pests. The only solution I found was to use a biological fungicide called Actinovate AG. For some reason the bacteria either kills or deactivates the worms. Actinovate AG is rather expensive and can only be purchased during certain times of the year because the bacteria is perishable. The seed potatoes may be cut into pieces and dried for 4 to 5 days ( do not use a dehydrator!!!!) or buy only small seed potatoes without cutting them (to avoid the moisture issue). I would plant in raised beds 6" - 8" high. The beds should be 3' to 4' wide and 10' to 20" long . Plant the seed potatoes 5" deep in the beds. Plant the seed potatoes 12" apart and plant them in rows 12" apart. probably three rows per bed. When the plants break ground, add more soil (hilling), to allow the tubers to grow on the root stems below ground. By hilling a few times you will get more potatoes because the root stems will produce more stem nodules, hence more potatoes. By the way, potatoes are heavy feeders. The more organic matter the better.
@ArthurDavidson
@ArthurDavidson 4 года назад
BTW, these nematodes will attack almost everything you try to grow in the native soil. Potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, and eggplant are in the same plant family. Until I discovered Actinovate AG, I had to plant in containers only. The nematodes would eventually get in through the drainage holes on the pots and containers. I had to remove the contaminated soil, sterilize the containers to start over. Very frustrating!
@zsquire1
@zsquire1 4 года назад
@@ArthurDavidson I'm going to try a few in a wicking bed container I put up on plywood with wheels! You're right about the soil and pests in Florida. Containers help and I'm hoping for better results! Thanks for the reply, much appreciated!

@@ArthurDavidson "Do not use a dehydrator" I read the comment above, thought that myself. So glad you answered. No one is really saying how long you should "scab" them. I'm embarrassed because my parents were potatoes farmers in the 60 and 70 in SW NYS. I rode the planter as a kid... I drove the tractor as I got older, and got a nickle a bushel for picking... weeding was the worst, but my parents refused poisons... atrazine... (sp) comes to mind. I PLANT potatoes every year... but I have a problem with the cut ones rotting. God bless you and your granddaughter.

Commercial growers use machines to cut seed potatoes. They don't cut for visible "eyes". Most of the time there are immature "eyes" that will develop into stems which produce potatoes.
@JoshuaNardi
@JoshuaNardi 3 года назад
Thank you, sir! Can I use the same method with sweet potato slips?
@ArthurDavidson
@ArthurDavidson 3 года назад
Sweet potatoes must be started from rooted cuttings known as slips. They are easy to start from a sweet potato laid on their side half submerged in soil or vertically in water. The potato is suspended in water using toothpicks. When the sprouts reach about 6" to 8" long the "slips" will form root bumps where they are attached to the potato. These slips are easily removed and can be planted when the soil temperature is above 75 degrees (F). Sweet potatoes require heat to grow properly as they are tropical in nature. I hope that answers your question.

Well done work raising such a wonderful child!!! One quick question. I saw a vid from China and the lady used a purple powder on the potatoes after they were cut. I am guessing it was some kind of organic fungicide. Is there any drying agent needed like she was using?

What effect has cutting a potato on the yield ? Say, you planted two large seed potatoes, next to two cut into 4, which would produce the bigger crop ? Regards from the UK
@ArthurDavidson
@ArthurDavidson 4 года назад
I am not sure. I will investigate and report back. BTW, all of the commercial growers cut their seed potatoes. As long as most of the cuttings have two to three "eyes" (sprouting spots), you should get a good yield. P.S. - an Irish potato is not a true potato. The "potato" is actually a modified stem. The more and/or longer the sprouts, the more "potatoes" you will get. The long sprout method definitely produces a larger yield. I used this method years ago with fantastic results!

@ArthurDavidson

1. Let them dry 3 - 4 days depending on the humidity. Four days to be sure. 2. If you use potatoes from the grocery store, they are usually treated with chemicals to keep them from sprouting. That would not be a wise choice. Use either certified seed potatoes or ones you stored from last years crop.
