You're a good teacher. I see now that I've been cutting off the spent bloom spikes too low on my veronicas, and wondered why they didn't rebloom as advertised 🙄
Hi Maria - glad I could help! Your Veronica may put out some blooms, but it will take much longer than it would if you cut them just below each flower. But fingers crossed you might get a couple of blooms after cutting them low. Nonetheless, you’ve got nice green foliage to enjoy on these plants. Always find a bright side when gardening! 🙂🌺 Keep me posted if you get a few more blooms, ok? I hope that you do!
I’ve got several Royal candles I’ve been struggling with. They are so tiny but vibrant. I’ve never deadheaded until this year. I can’t wait for the results. Thank you!!!
Many gardeners will just shear them back, which accidentally removes new flower buds. Instead, simple deadheading means they’ll give you flowers all Summer long! 👍 Enjoy choosing a pretty variety for next year! 🙂
Oooh First Glory has such a pretty blue color! 💙 I wish I had your weather in Ireland, as we’re beginning yet another heatwave here in the Eastern US. 🫠🥵
Totally agree: deadheading is relaxing to me and almost therapeutic! I love the wonderful results of cleaned up plants and more flowers! It’s only mid-July and I’m SO done with this heat and humidity. 🥵🙃🙂
Concise and precise instructional video. I have 3 Veronicas but their leaves from the bottom/inside are completely wilted, and yellowed only the tips of the plants look good. Not sure why that is.
Glad the video was helpful! 🙂 When plants get yellow leaves, it can be - confusingly enough - from either too little water or too much water. If the yellowing is primarily at the bottom and inside, it could mean the plants are getting too much moisture/water. The roots might be waterlogged. If it was me, I would try and remove the wilted foliage and see what I’m left with. I’d also reduce watering to see if that helps. If it continues to look bad and more yellowing occurs, then I would cut the plant back and let it restart growing again. It means you won’t get any more blooms this season, but it may end up solving the issue. Veronicas do like moisture, but they also need good air flow between plants. I hope this helps! And I hope your Veronica rebounds nicely! 🌱👍
Hi Joanne -- it could be one of two things: either too much water (leaves dry up and turn brown) or too much water (leaves turn yellow and then eventually die). If you've had a wet Spring perhaps that's what is causing the yellowing of the leaves. Is it all over the plant or just in spots? Add some slow-release fertilizer or compost into the soil around the plants to help give the plants a little boost of nutrients. (I always hate the answer, "it might be too much or too little water" so I apologize this is my answer to you. 🙂 It's a fine line to know which one is the culprit.
hi Laura, yes we are very hot here too. we live by the ocean but the humidity has been brutal the last few days. i have veronica but i have white wands... good to know this info! do you know much about dividing them? i'd like to make more of my veronica but not sure if they divide well. 🥵 hope you stay cool!
Yes it’s always the humidity that does me in! The worst is when even near the ocean, we get land breezes sometimes that are just so hot. 🥵 White wands is very pretty and I’d like to add that to my garden! 🤍 Veronica divides well. I divided one of the Bubblegum Candles that I bought. I used a Hori Hori knife to slice down the middle of the plant, like slicing a large piece of cake. I didn’t do it as evenly as I wanted, and it resulted in a tiny piece. I planted it anyway and it’s fine. 🙂 I could have also used my hands to gently separate the plant too. I want to try propagating them. (I’m deciding what I want to buy for this purpose…and yes, will be a video.) 👍 I hope you stay cool too! I just want bearable weather! 🤣🤯
Mine was leggy and flopped, so I just chopped it in half. I’m feeling your bunny pain right now. A bunny chewed off some branches of my boxwood hedge to make a nest in there. 🤬🐰
Oh no on both counts! 😲 But I get it: sometimes you just need to chop something down and be done with it. Which variety do you have? As for the bunny nest - I guess that bunny is smart to find a safe place to have babies. But how frustrating for you! ☹️
I'm having an odd issue where when I prune the dead ones off the cut area dies and browns and a lot of the time kills the entire branch. Not sure what's going on.
Hi Katie -- you can, but I found it wasn't as easy as some other perennials. The roots just sort of fell apart and I had to try and "push" them all back together. 🤣 A plant eventually grew, but it I wouldn't call it one of my better dividing moments! Next time, I will carefully dig out the plant, place it on the ground on its side and use a hori-hori knife to try and cut the plant in half -- from the roots up to the "surface" of the plant. Some perennials you can even just gently pull apart the different sections to make new plants -- but that's wasn't my personal experience with Veronica. Hope this helps!
