Part of a series of videos looking at dealing with `faults` in wood, this episode I help with one method of `repairing` a knot in a Yew stave, this method involves using a wooden plug to strengthen the hole that is left in the middle of a knot. Next episode we will be looking at repairing a crack.

As usual, this video leaves nothing to the imagination!! Very nicely done. I’m super impressed at your abilities to use a hand drill with such accuracy as well as your creating a near perfect cylindrical plug with a rasp and file. I’ve seen other videos of plugging a knot but this one is a master class! Thanks for posting.

I have to say, your ability to shape wood is absolutely amazing to watch! Even for something as small as creating a plug, it’s extremely symmetrical! Loved watching this and hope to use this video when I need an example while making some mesquite wood bows this year

@@longbows Wow, I know the internet is terrible but but I guess I underestimated it's limits. I am pretty new to self bow making and your information is extremely valuable to me. I am working on a mulberry stave right now, along with a few black walnut staves that I'm not quite sure about so I'll practice with them. I have about 20 Osage staves going through seasoning but many of them have a lot of character so I'll hopefully hone my skills for a few years until I can get to them. Never mind the naysayers I love your channel and again can't stress enough how much it helps me. Keep up the great work!

@@longbows Absolutely. I haven't had to deal with it yet, but I would have wondered how to handle it when I did. I may not have trusted a simple tight dowel to do the job. I also would have worried myself about grain orientation, etc, etc. I am currently repairing an old, very damaged violin. Everything here is about grain orientation and such juju.

Can you use this method on other species of wood and how big of knot hole can you use this technique on? Thanks!
@longbows
@longbows 3 года назад
Yes you can, I have not tested the size to destruction, so that is a hard one to answer.

Phillip Herb here The plug you used ,was not the grain of the plug going in the wrong detection to the staff will that plug compress differently then if the plug was also cut to the grain that could also be made with a plug cutter. The only real question for me is do they make a plug cutter that small I as question like that only because it seams there would be a problem
@longbows
@longbows 3 года назад
It won't make any difference because the area will not be bending due to the extra material I leave around the knot, please watch the video I mentioned so you can understand
@nadermargh

Hi Herbert, as I’m a luthier also I found it interesting that the grain was not matched but I understand the solution. I’ve made several different sized plug cutters by filing teeth on the end of small tubing. StewMac do a screw repair kit for those pesky machine head screws that sheer off from time to time. I’ve got a yew stave that’s full of knots to repair. Great informative video I thought 👍
