Mindset is super important in tennis. You explain very well why this is. I have taught myself to only think about the point I am playing and not about what has been. No negative self talk. On a bad day I try to get back to basics and just focus on hitting a few decent shots across court until my confidence starts growing again. The momentum can change in any match, and it's never too late to turn things around. It's not over until it's over. Also, I always think that winning/losing 50% of your matches shows you are playing at the right level :D (so can accept the losses as par for the course)

The art of telling stories of inspiration learning lessons for life is something missing in today’s sport. The game has become so technical players are more focused on learning and perfecting their techniques but don’t develop experience and mental strength. Great video coach. Wishing Safin the very best in the road ahead . God bless !

This was a master class in coaching. I loved the Coach Wooden quote that Nick shared and the whole narrative was great with Nick ignoring Safin and then telling him why and later proving that his forehand is fine with the rallying. Perfect combination of being a tough coach yet totally caring about his student. Great work.

Hey Nik, loved this video. So many tennis channel videos focus on improving technique but tennis is such a mental game so it's really valuable to get your insights. Hope to see more soon!

Just a great lesson for all tennis players. Lost 2 league matches in the Supertiebreaker and was feeling negative. Thanks for the inspirational lesson.

great advice about "tennis equilibrium"...if you want to see what you said on film, watch the movie "Match Point" (directed by Woody Allen)

Like coach said, his forehand is fine. He does seem to lose concentration a little during the stroke, as witnessed by the ball clearing the net at different heights. It's like he's concentrating more on technique instead of execution. If he would focus more on a higher projectory utilizing more spin, it will help him more in tight situations in my opinion. He seem to be in dire need of strength training. Those close overheads were really weak. Better cardio training and diet (Skittles?😱) will help him push through longer matches.

Today I played a good match and had a match point in the supertiebreak 9-8. I did lose the match 11-9 and I really wanted a video to give me a good energy . I am really feeling down because the drop shot I played on my match point was out by 1cm. Hopefully I will win my next match

Hard not to see myself in Safin with that negative self-talk, but I will always chase down a ball - very frustrating to see him continue being so passive in practice like that.

You made a good and difficult point, Nick (difficult because it's hard to adopt). So why is losing so painful and winning so important? I guess the reason may differ from one person to another, but for me winning is a confirmation of my ability to master some non-trivial task and losing is my inability to deliver the goods and even, to some extent, to be helpless--like unable to reach a drop shot after a 20 stroke rally. So, for me, lack of confidence and being down on myself is the flip side of helplessness. Tennis is a cruel sport for several reasons but especially because it is mano a mano, like boxing. The only difference with boxing is that, instead of hurting your opponent with a physical blow, you mentally hurt them by forcing them to error.

Same thing happened to Thiem recently. He did two ethereal tweeners in one game and lost the match eventually.

Great video Nick, you say there’s nothing technically wrong with safin’s forehand but doesn’t he hold his racket the wrong way on his forehand? There is no space between his middle finger and index finger, he sort of just makes a fist. I used to do this on my forehand and because of it I made a ton of mistakes on mostly halfcourt shots

Nick I tell you what is wrong with his forehand, its not a huge mistake and you will probably dissagre with me. He playes the ball with his forehand to close to his body...
