It’s very comforting to hear you sound so positive and know that these behaviours are common and can be minimised if handled well. 👍🏻

Hi Kelli, This is your second video I am watching and honestly I give it to you. In fact, while reading your brief video description, I saw a link to Another big issue I face with my son which is Picky eaters and I know I will benefit from it. In fact, I am reading for my exams coming up soon but I am glad I used this time watching your clips. I call your video High yield material because I am really impressed. Thanks again. I will make sure to check out your other platforms too. Thank you

I had a question. I have a 2 year old that about to be 3 little words and when he is mad he start to really hit me and spit at me and throw toy or anything at me and scream and I do what a few people tell me to just not pay any attention to me and my thing when he goes outside he run away from me and I just don't know how to stop that when I chase him he think he has to run more

This is so helpful! I have a child diagnosed with nonverbal asd who can get aggressive/injures himself (we use ASL, PECS, and continuing to build his verbal vocabulary). You mentioned when the child calms down, then say "Oh, thank you for being quiet. Did you want Mommy?" Is there an estimated time you recommend we say this, or how long should we wait (when they've calmed down) to approach and say this to them? Because my child would cry, scream, etc. while I ignore him, then he calms down. I usually wait about 2 minutes (he stayed calm the entire time) then I approach him. However, when I approach him, he'll dive back into the meltdown/tantrum again so I ignore and the cycle sort of repeats. I'm not sure if he dives back into the meltdown because he's frustrated once more for being unable to express/explain to me? Or if he's having a tantrum for a different function you mentioned. I would like to learn more how to know what the function is, because from past experience, my son would be repulsed by a certain color, texture, etc. of the item, toy or food he requested but unable to communicate. So a sample scenario, he requests for me to help open the door to our pantry. We go into the pantry and offer him a muffin and chip to choose (to give him opportunity to point and further request). He will successfully request for muffin. However, as he sits down, he doesn't eat the muffin and throws a tantrum trying to tell me something. Turns out, he refuses to eat the lighter shade of the muffin, and will only eat the outer part/crust that's darker brown if that makes sense (so the spoonful of lighter and darker muffin he won't eat). It took us 3 days of trying to understand and calm him down to understand he didn't like the "lighter" part of the muffin but because of the language barrier, he ended up bruising his hand from hitting the floor during his tantrum. So I would like to better understand how to find the function and what sort of scenarios we can try to understand if it's a certain fear to sound, texture, color, etc. and how to provide positive reinforcement behaviors to replace with. You have our heartfelt gratitude and know you are making such huge impact in the lives of our children and families around the world. Thank you so much!

Could you make a video on why toddlers flip sounds or entire words, please? Are they hearing it in reverse in their mind? Examples: Says "I want turn light ON" when it's already on and actually wants to turn it off. And vice versa. Same with open/close doors curtains and windows. Or when asking to go for a drive when we are already out for a drive. Or asking to swim when we are already swimming. Etc. I typically say "the window IS closed. Do you want to open it?" "We ARE driving." Or sort of a dyslexia of words. Instead of "I'll be right back" saying "I'll right be back." Or says pinano [pee-na-no] for piano throwing in an additional consonant sound. Is almost 3 yrs old. Cant say L sound yet. Cant lift tongue to top teeth. Born with minor tongue tie. Recites entire books and episodes. "Parroting" will repeat same thing 10-50 times. Example; while driving to beach 1 hour away will.ask to go to beach 50 times on the drive there. Seems to be starting to understand now what I mean by "we are on the way" or "be patient we are almost there". I also say "say it one time and then say something else" but please tell me there is something better I could be saying/doing. Thank you so much

Also, if a 3 year old child throws and kicks on play materials to go back home, and starts tearing up, should the mother pick her up and comfort her? If not, what else can be done?
@TheSpeechScoop
@TheSpeechScoop 4 года назад
sorry I am just now seeing this, but no, you want to ignore negative behaviors and walk away. Give positive attention and praise for playing appropriately and cleaning up (go over the top with praise!) and model what to do!

Hi, Could you please provide videos on two things- 1. How to teach “AY” sound like in Pay/ day/ May. My child says like pya.. dya.. 2. In general, her words are like boohhhss.. meaning breaths blended with sounds in place of ‘ boo’ Please please help!!!!
@TheSpeechScoop
@TheSpeechScoop 4 года назад
Chitra Shukla If your child does not yet have the long “E” sound, they will not be able to produce “AY” because it’s a double sound, with stress and ended in “E” so I would suggest tart getting “E” first! I believe I have a Val Q for E in my apraxia video, are usually say big pretty smile to tighten the lips, then model “eeee” like in the word sqEEEze & squeeze a wash cloth or something in front of my mouth to draw attention. Maybe try that first! :) I’m not sure I understand number two, could you elaborate a little more? Also, how old is your child? Thanks!

So if they hit, are you supposed to ignore that? Like hit the dog? Especially if they are doing it for attention

What if the child now cries in response to praise? (ie: thank you, yay, well done, good job)
@TheSpeechScoop
@TheSpeechScoop 3 года назад
Very typical. Because they did not want to be compliant. Still important to praise but not overly & then do not give attention to the continued melt down (I. E walk away) Let me know

I have a hard time with this because should you not respond any time they throw a tantrum or get angry? Does that show them they're not allowed to have "negative" feelings and only positive ones?
@TheSpeechScoop
@TheSpeechScoop 2 года назад
I definitely understand and as the parent, you know your child and it's important to understand and validate feelings and emotions. This video is specifically for behavioral tantrums which are very different from meltdowns. There are lots of resources available on meltdowns and feeling supports. Sometimes its okay to feel a certain way, but hitting, kicking, biting and screaming may be inappropriate reactions to a feeling; therefore, there needs to be an appropriate response and opportunity for safe and healthy expression of feelings (and this also develops over time as the brain continues to develop)

If the child's making a tantrum in the kitchen and we can't ask "what do you want, do you want this?", what do we do?
@TheSpeechScoop
@TheSpeechScoop 4 года назад
You can ask them once they are calm! Just walk away, out of the kitchen until they calm down, and then come back in as soon as they are calm and give positive reinforcement like "I like how you're quiet! What can I get for you? applesauce?" the main thing is to give no attention to the negative behaviors (tantrums) and all the attention to the positive behaviors (pointing, using words, asking for something using gesutres) let me know if you have a specific examples! speedyspeechpath@gmail.com

Our 22 month has apraxia snd cry’s all the time to get his mama to pick him up. She picks him up everytime because we feel it is because he can’t express himself with words. Would you still ignore the behavior and not pick him up?
@TheSpeechScoop
@TheSpeechScoop 2 года назад
No I wouldn’t ignore the crying if the child cannot say “mama” - the crying is communication - instead maybe play peek a boo w speech sound hand cues & target mama that way!

How do you handle a child hitting a sibling?
@TheSpeechScoop
@TheSpeechScoop Год назад
I would find the route cause of the hitting. Then address that! If it is attention, avoidance, sharing, etc. Then practice those things and praise positive interactions and sharing, etc. Social stories about hitting may help too
