Worldbuilding is one of those elements in fiction that is unique to sci-fi & fantasy and its many subgenres. And for many of us, it is what initially draws us in to the genre. Some people get drawn in because of the worldbuilding of some other author’s story. Others simply get drawn in at the prospect of worldbuilding their own setting for a story they want to tell.
And while I would definitely encourage every aspiring sci-fi & fantasy author to put effort into their worldbuilding, there is a major pitfall that must be warned against. This is a pitfall that has chewed up and spit out more new fantasy writers than I could ever care to count. It’s something easy to avoid if you know what to look for, but also easy to fall for if you’re not prepared.
I’m talking, of course, about Worldbuilder’s Disease. It’s something every fantasy writer must be prepared to deal with and something you must approach with some tact to avoid falling into.
So what is Worldbuilder’s Disease? Is it all that bad? And how can one avoid the traps and pitfalls surrounding Worldbuilder’s Disease in general?

Also for everyone to consider: worldbuilding can be a hobby in and of itself, finding enjoyment in detailed worldbuilding is as valid as writing a story without any consideration for worldbuilding

100% agreed. I was talking about in the context of writing a novel, but your take is absolutely valid

Dang! I needed this video. I recently got out of World's Builder disease, and it felt liberating to finally write something down. It was great!

I do a lot of worldbuilding, and sometimes its for the worldbuilding itself, but sometimes it definitely counts as worldbuilders disease, but in my defense of the latter: fiction world fun

But yeah, worldbuilders disease has definitely killed a lot of my projects

I think if you reach an unknown in the world you're building, it can be okay to leave it unknown if you stay conscious that it is an unknown as you proceed with writing. For instance, I'm involved in a world-building experiment in which people have several different perspectives on spiritual and/or scientific reality. I already know some of these ideas are wrong (this world is set in a time when Piltdown Man was still believed to be a real thing : D) but I don't know who's right, or if anyone's "right". Maybe it will become clear to me later, maybe not. Maybe that question will be important to stories out of this world.

Speaking of world building, just in the middle of Tress of the emerald sea. Excellent construction of the world and setting. Seems almost like a Terry Pratchett book. I think it also gives a clue to what Hoid is up to, he talks about old ideas being stale. I think he wants to split and splinter all the shards infinitely and democratise godhood.

Yeah I love the world building of Tress

I don't build worlds to write stories usually i do it because like to do it. And maybe i will write something one day. If you are a writer it might be a disease, but as with all things it is more complicated than can be boiled down to a video
